Description

From Publishers Weekly O'Brien (Compromised Miss) explores the Wars of the Roses in her first historical romance for NAL. When Richard Neville, earl of Warwick, plots to marry his daughters Anne and Isobel to King Edward's brothers, Richard and Clarence, Edward disapproves of the earl's ambition. Neville joins with Clarence to rebel against Edward; their failure leads the Nevilles to France and the exiled Lancasters. Anne's father promotes her as a possible bride for Edward Lancaster, though Anne's passion for her onetime fiancé Richard, now on the other side of the battle, is unabated. No matter how the rebellion goes, Anne is trapped with a husband she does not want and no way to reach the man she loves. O'Brien has excellent control over the historical material and a rich sense of characterization, making for a fascinating and surprisingly female-focused look at one of the most turbulent periods of English history. Anne O’Brien taught history in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, before deciding to fulfill an ambition to write historical fiction. She is the author of many historical novels, including The Virgin Widow , Queen Defiant , and The King’s Concubine . She lives in an eighteenth-century timbered cottage with her husband in the Welsh Marches in Herefordshire, a wild, remote area that provides much inspiration for the medieval settings of her works. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. From Booklist Written more for romantic historians than history buffs, this novel focuses on the life of Anne Neville, daughter of the powerful and revolutionary Earl of Warwick, as she lives through the War of the Roses. Anne grows up as any noble daughter would in the late-fifteenth century: studying, sewing, and learning how to carefully negotiate political and personal alliances. As an adolescent, she begins a fiery and undying romance with Richard of Gloucester, brother to the king, who is being trained at her family’s castle. Her father grows increasingly intolerant of the king’s less than palatable political decisions and plots a rebellion that leads the king to banish her entire family from England—effectively destroying any hope she had of marrying Richard. As Anne and her family flee, she must leave her romance with Richard to fate as she struggles for survival and as her father begins to plot his return to England. While slightly anachronistic in tone, this novel is an engaging romance with well-developed and fetching characters. An enjoyable, heart-wrenching read. --Julie Hunt --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. Read more

Fascinating, even if you think you know her story

This is the third book I have read by Anne O'Brien, and it probably will not be my last. She has the ability to retell history while bringing the human spirit, good and bad, to life in all of her characters.

If you have either run out of or become disenchanted with the works of Philippa Gregory and/or Alison Weir, O'Brien will not disappoint.

I really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it ...

I really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down. I will immediately explain that there is not doubt this is a romance novel and there are moments that I feel the women of the novel speak or behave much more boldly than the customs of the time allowed for them. However, I still really enjoyed the portrayal of Anne Neville and I think O'Biren does a great job about following the actual historical events while still adding her own fresh style. When focusing on a character like Anne Neville, who in real life is one of histories mysterious queens, there are many ways to interpret her character and fill in the many gaps of her life history did not record. In this book Anne is a strong, intelligent, stubborn woman, which is how I would like to think she was. In the book you really get the sense of her struggle as she is a very independent woman who unfortunately has no choice but to be a pawn in a world that at the time was entirely run by men. Even if there are some liberties taken with the language or actions it is still a good read that portrays the life of young Anne and Richard as a great love story. I found it to be a fun read and recommend it for anyone looking for a light hearted historical romance that also is packed with action as well as War of Roses politics.

1469 During the War of the Roses A great book Linda C (August 2013)

This is wonderful book. I am, currently, watching the series "The White Queen". This book is the exact same era. It is the "other side of the coin" from the perspective of the White Queen; which is from King Edward's side (York) vs. the Warwick side (Lancaster). Anne Neville is the heroine of this book. Her father is the famous Earl of Warwick. Read and see. Beautifully written...Linda C

The Virgin Widow

I really loved this book. I also loved the way the Author wrote the book in the first person. The information was true to form. I have read many books about King Edward and his two brothers and Isabel and Anne the wives of the two brothers and in each book the information has basically been the same. I really injoyed it. Sometimes I do read books over again and this is a book I could read again.

A very well written and pleasurable book

As someone who read some books about the war of the roses I must say that this is a well written, captivating novel, which was a pleasure to read. Also Anne O'brien's version of Anne Neville and Richard plantagenet is very believable. It is a very good read.
