Features & Highlights

  • Walt Erickson has achieved a level of success most novelists can only dream of—yet the way he’s reached this point in life is the stuff of nightmares.
  • With his agent, an associate, and a particularly unique typewriter by his side, Walt’s creative process is much more sinister and merciless than the average writer’s. The lengths to which one man will go to achieve fame and notoriety give a chilling glimpse into what humans are capable of, regardless of the moral consequences.
  • The Wordsmith
  • is a thrilling and darkly innovative story of suspense, one that will force you to wonder if we can ever truly know the whole story behind the people we love. Is it possible to unearth the darkest details of ourselves and still come out alive?
  • As Walt’s hunger for fame continues to grow, and his girlfriend begins to suspect the unsettling truth behind his words, the tenuous threads holding Walt’s life together begin to fray.
  • From the astoundingly imaginative mind of Alan Ayer,
  • The Wordsmith
  • is a gripping narrative that dares to peer into the shadows of the darkest aspects of humanity. Our story—our fate in life—is often written against our will.

A riveting story!

This is an incredible story—truly riveting, in a Stephen King kind of way. I could not wait to keep reading. It’s almost as if the author typed it on the Wordsmith typewriter! There were also some very funny passages that were a nice touch, such as one character who seemed to switch to a different conversational topic every time an imaginary buzzer went off.

An all-around great, well-written story.

A good story that gained momentum and suspense as you read on. Ayer brings you straight into the minds of his characters- uncut, flawed, and utterly human. With a humorous, fresh writing style and vivid imagery, you may find yourself locked into this novel.

Nice page-turning suspense novel where characters drive the story beyond the central premise

It is a good sign when you don't want to tell too much about a book in a review because you don't want to spoil any of the surprises for a potential reader. What can be said is that the characters are clearly laid out and as the novel progresses these initial impressions are revealed to be not quite what they seem.

From the outset, The Wordsmith offers enough teases to keep you reading to find out exactly what is going on and what is going to go wrong once you are onto the central mystery. What shines here (as opposed to some suspense novels) is that the characters drive the story and are not reactionary victims to forces beyond their control - all their successes and failures are their own.

If I had any complaints, it would a couple of jarring point-of-view changes that occur out of nowhere and, to be honest, a bit of a contrived sequence of events leading up to an otherwise good ending.
