Description

Enhanced by Denton's sensitively drawn portrayals of the characters within well-imagined scenes of domestic life, this picture book will validate the experience of other two-household children, while intriguing those single-home families. Simple, yet profoundly satisfying.—BooklistThe ink, watercolor, and gouache illustrations are comforting and warm....This book is clearly intended to help parents tell their children that they are still loved despite their living arrangements.—School Library JournalOn page after page, Alex and his parents engage in the pleasant common activities of early childhood, from playing dress-up with an assortment of friends, taking a bath, and shucking peas at Dad's, to baking gingerbread men at Mom's. An extremely positive take on an often painful subject.—Kirkus ReviewsIn this sweet, simple tale, Alex discovers all the positive things that come from living in different places with his mom and dad.—Parents Claire Masurel is the author of numerous books for children, including TOO BIG, illustrated by Hanako Wakiyama. TWO HOMES is her first book for Candlewick Press. She wrote the story after talking to a child who was sad about her parents’ recent divorce. She says, "To comfort her, I talked about her two homes, and all the many things she could do in them. It was a positive way of helping her accept the changes in her life, focusing not on what was missed, but on the abundance of good times — and love — that she would continue to share with her mom and dad."Kady MacDonald Denton is the illustrator of A CHILD'S TREASURY OF NURSERY RHYMES and two books by Margaret Park Bridges - IF I WERE YOUR FATHER and IF I WERE YOUR MOTHER. TWO HOMES is her first book for Candlewick Press. She says, "Alex talks about simple things like toothbrushes, bedrooms, and friends — and they are all special because they are part of the love Alex feels in both homes. I tried to show that love in the illustrations."

Features & Highlights

  • "Parents looking for a book about separation or divorce will find few offerings as positive, matter-of-fact, or child-centered as this one. . . . Simple, yet profoundly satisfying." —

  • At Mommy’s house, Alex has a soft chair. At Daddy’s house, Alex has a rocking chair. In each home, Alex also has a special bedroom and lots of friends to play with. But whether Alex is with Mommy or with Daddy, one thing always stays the same — Alex is loved. The gently reassuring text focuses on what is gained rather than what is lost when parents divorce, while the sensitive illustrations, depicting two unique homes in all their small details, firmly establish Alex’s place in both of them.
  • Two Homes
  • will help children — and parents — embrace even the most difficult of changes with an open and optimistic heart.

Two of everything ~ including parents!

It is an excellent book! The biggest reason why I like it is that it is a neutral book ~ the child has two of everything ~ it doesn't convey the child lives with one parent and visits the other parent. I really like this book!

I bought this book to read to my son when I first got divorced. It's a great book because it put a positive spin on having two different households and reassures the child that he/she can always be in touch with the other parent when he/she isn't around. Very encouraging.

Best book on parental divorce/separation

One of the best books for children who spend time with both parents but whose parents are not together, whether due to divorce, or whether they never lived together. No preaching, no "explaining," just showing, with lovely illustrations, a child with 2 homes. This normalizes the experience for the reader (or one being read to) and helps them accept having two homes. I am a child therapist with many children whose parents are divorced or separated. This book is usually the first book on the topic that I read to children. It introduces the subject in a non-threatening way, easing the transition into books that go into more depth. Highly recommended.

"She's just like me!"

That's what my little girl (3) said when we read the book - "Oh! She's just like me!". I like this book because my daughter was so young when I divorced her father that she doesn't remember us being together so she never asks if it was her fault. A lot of other books focus on that aspect. Would also be a great book for children of parents who never were married. I would say age range is 2-4.

simple book about living in two households that does not mention divorce

I bought this book for my then four-year-old son and it is one of his favorites. The book made him very much feel he was not alone as a preschooler with two houses. What I loved about the book is that it does not mention parents splitting up or kids going through the divorce process, which most kids' books about having divorced parents do. No doubt there is a great need for those books, but I just needed a book about not feeling like the odd man out because your parents live in two houses. So if your preschooler does not remember going through divorce (because his parents divorced when he was tiny) or if your preschooler has amicably divorced parents, this is the book for you. Highly recommend.

Sweet Book During a Hard Time

As sad as it made me to have to buy this book, it is a great book for my 7 year old. It's a very simple and upbeat way of reminding kids that both parents have different places they live, but no matter where they are, they love you and you love them.

Great book for kids with separated parents

Great book for kids with separated parents. Does NOT mention divorce, which is what I was looking for. Focuses on simple things that both houses have in common (Ex. chairs), and talks about the kid being loved no matter where he is. Illustrations are not the best.

I highly recommend this book. My son asks me to read him this book almost every night since we got it. Now, he even changed the Name of the Main characters name to his own.

Not as good as I had hoped it would be

Book was okay. Not as good as I had hoped it would be. Kind of blah in my opinion.
