Description

From Booklist *Starred Review* Here’s all you really need to know about Chelsea Handler, straight from the girl herself: “It is not lost on me that my life has become ridiculous.” Handler, star of her own late-night TV show, Chelsea Lately, and best-selling author of three previous titles, including Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea (2008), takes readers on her travels; each adventure can only be described as a total shit show. Absurdity reigns, from a safari in Africa, where the only ones getting penetrated (her favorite word) are the hundreds of baboons at the lodge, to the Bahamas, where after eight days in Africa without a bowel movement, Handler finally lets loose into an innocent kayak. The U.S. is not left unscathed, either. At most times, Handler is surrounded by her friends—let’s face it, she wouldn’t survive on her own—and Chunk, a half-German, half-Asian dog that she believes to be the reincarnation of her dead mother. As long as someone can make a decent margarita, and there’s Xanax on hand, Handler is just fine—although the same can’t be said for the people she encounters. The final chapters really have nothing to do with travel and feel less connected to the rest of the book; in Handler’s defense, she was probably drunk by this point in the writing process. But if you’re one of the millions who enjoy Handler’s sarcastic, self-deprecating humor (and her tendency to be pantless), then you may just pee yourself laughing as she humiliates herself from Montenegro to Telluride. Unfortunately—really unfortunately—photos weren’t available at the time of review, but based on the shenanigans described, they have a ton of potential. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Who’s not watching Chelsea Lately at 11/10c? --Ann Kelley Born in Livingston, New Jersey, to a Jewish father and a Mormon mother, Chelsea Handler is the youngest of six children. She is the star and host of E!'s Chelsea Lately . www.eonline.com/chelsealately www.myspace.com/chelseahandler

Features & Highlights

  • In this uproarious collection of travel essays, Chelsea Handler sneaks her sharp wit through airport security and delivers her most absurd and hilarious stories ever.
  • On safari in Africa, it's anyone's guess as to what's more dangerous: the wildlife or Chelsea. But whether she's fumbling the seduction of a guide by not knowing where tigers live (Asia, duh) or wearing a bathrobe into the bush because her clothes stopped fitting seven margaritas ago, she's always game for the next misadventure. The situation gets down and dirty as she defiles a kayak in the Bahamas, and outright sweaty as she escapes from a German hospital on crutches. When things get truly scary, like finding herself stuck next to a passenger with bad breath, she knows she can rely on her family to make matters even worse. Thank goodness she has the devoted Chunk by her side-except for the time she loses him in Telluride. Complete with answers to the most frequently asked traveler's questions, hot travel trips, and travel etiquette, none of which should be believed,
  • Uganda Be Kidding Me
  • has Chelsea taking on the world, one laugh-out-loud incident at a time.

What was she thinking???

Very disappointed with this "travelogue". Such a major disappointment after reading all her previous books and watching "Chelsea Lately" every night. I did not even laugh once. Complete waste of money. Seems like this was cranked out to fulfill a book contract.

Great for a light fun read

I'll start by saying Ive read all of Chelsea Handlers previous books, so when I heard she was doing another one it was on my list immediately. It follows the same format as the priors - a collection of separate anecdotal stories following a theme: this time it is travel. One nice addition to this one is a lot of color photographs illustrating the stories along the way - a really nice touch I appreciated in being able to see people and places being referenced! The first 1/3 of the book is the longest story following a safari trip through Africa, followed by trips to the Bahamas, Switzerland, a plane ride to Telluride, a ski trip to Montana interspersed with a couple 'at home' stories. Like previous books they gave me only a few major chuckles (toilet troubles in Bahamas being one of the highlights!), but the majority of the book is entertaining and interesting even when its not laugh-out-loud funny. You definitely need an appreciation for extreme sarcasm and to be able to overlook some embellishment and dumb levels of silliness at times. The one critique Id have if any is that Chelsea comes across a bit more whiny and over-privileged in this installment. Its sometimes hard to find humor in situations being complained about that are truly the first world problems of only the rich and famous and this is a departure from the more relatable humor Chelsea extracted in her earlier books. For the more demanding readers, yes, there are the odd mistakes and errors, and the writing is lacking in a few places where I felt I had to re-read parts and still couldnt really envision the place/scenario being described...but it didnt detract from the overall experience for me. Takeaway: Even her 4th release is still miles ahead of most comedy books and if you're needing a beach read for Spring Break or an upcoming holiday - definitely worth picking up if you're a fan of Chelsea's!

not what imagined.

I thought it was about Chelsea Handler's life and career, I thought "Uganda be kidding me" was just a pun, I didn't realize it was all about One trip in her life to Uganda. but I love her sense of humor. I was disappointed.

More of the same from Chelsea

The least interesting of Chelsea’s books. Quite honestly I found myself bored. Her sense of humor has gotten a little stale and it’s kind of sad to see a woman her age acting so foolishly and be so proud of it. If you’re looking to capture the magic of her early books you’ll be disappointed.

Sad Sad Sad.

I was saddened by the content of this book. I'm really tired of people poking fun at another race just to get (alleged) laughs.

Chelsea be kidding me- not in Uganda

I like Chelsea's show and since I live in Uganda I was looking forward to reading this book thinking she had been in Uganda. I am totally confused why she had Uganda in the title and yet she was never in this country, it was never mentioned in the book, and her safari was only in South Africa. Also the book was not even funny. I agree with all the one star reviews. I bought the book for my daughter also and she said "pretty dumb, waste of money". Sorry Chelsea, the continent of Africa is not one big country, it is many different countries that are culturally as different as Russia is to the USA. A disappointing book.
