Absolutely terrific

The murder of the Clutter family was horrible. People living outside Kansas generally know of the murders through Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood. Did anyone else help with the murders? The premise of this novel is that someone did help but managed to leave before Smith and Hickok were apprehended.

The author did her homework and poured that research into crafting a book that grabs you and keeps you captive until the last page. It is shown to be extremely plausible that another person could have been involved.

What impressed me is the grasp the author has on the topic. She describes how a second wife feels in a marriage with startling clarity. She gets it. In fact she gets it so much that you forget this is not an autobiography. I found myself admiring her descriptive ability almost as much as I admired her handling of the story. I strongly encourage you to pick up or download a copy of this novel. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

First rate series

Love that an over 60 year old is the hero. Well written, wonderful characters, true to life psychology.

Wow!

As I had read In Cold Blood years ago when I saw the reviews of this book I knew I had to read it. While it is fiction, the many "what ifs" and odd areas of Capote's book are what makes this story so very plausible. And, even if you have not read In Cold Blood, this can be a page turner for most crime story fans. I also loved the main characters and their relationship as they struggle - like most of us - to understand each other and why we are as we are.

Intriguing premise!

Very well researched and very well written. I read Truman Capote's book right before reading this book and Masterman's book is definitely my preference.

Good versus Evil

This was a typical good v evil read with an interesting twist of linking it to a known literary classic. This would be a good read for a "true crime" enthusiast as it creates another angle on the murders written about in Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood". I gave it 4 stars because, although the book kept my interest, there were parts of the story that fell flat. The predictability of the novel was lackluster as the reader could tell what happens in the end within the first 25% of the book. However the adventure that ensues is worth the read.

Entertaining

Although I don’t read many of this genre of book, I was interested in this one due to its link with the Clutter killings in the 1950s. Although it’s fictional, the author used that case , along with a still unsolved case of the murder of another family in Florida shortly after the killings in Kansas. Although I don’t think the author’s theory holds much weight , I guess there could possibly be a link between the cases. I know many people have tried to find that one connection that would give the answers needed. This book was entertaining enough for me to read it in a day, so it gets bonus points for that.

Very Intriguing Story

This started a bit slow but gained interest fast. The writing is well paced and details keep the reader interested. It is a good thriller right to the end. The character of the Kid, Jerry, was a fascinating read given his actual existence is only legend, or is he? Jerry might still be among the living.....

A Thriller Unlike Any Other

This was a such an interesting story being fiction but based on a possible idea from a real life true crime situation. This was a violent story at the end, but I figured it would have to be to finish the story. Event though it was part of a series, you can read these stand alone. I have always been a Truman Capote fan, but knowing the In Cold Blood wrecked him, I went in to this one hesitantly. Overall it was a very good read and you can tell the author not only did research to write this she really thought through the process.
