Beginning of the Family Saga....Excellent

When the Lion Feeds is volume one of six novels featuring "The Courtneys" although the books are not written in chronological order. The family saga begins with twins Garrick and Sean growing up on a cattle ranch in the Natal area of Southern Africa. When the Zulu nation raids the area the two brothers and their father join a brigade to fight and defend their land.

After the war the twins return home to the ranch but when a horrible misunderstanding fomented by Garrick's wife occurs Sean sets out on his own to start a new life. Along the was he meets Duff, a mining engineer, and they decide to seek their fortune in the Witwatersrand, the site of a frenzied gold rush. Over several years the partners amass a large fortune through hard work, determination and cunning.but end up losing everything when they are blindly deceived by another powerful man. Seeking a new beginning they travel to "The Wilderness" to hunt elephant for their ivory tusks. During their travels in the bush several momentous events occur that I will leave to the reader to discover for themselves.

This is first and foremost an excellent adventure story but it is much more than that. it is a story about the friendship between two rugged men, the loyalty between a master and his slave and the unspoken love of a man for a woman. It is also about the love of the rugged African land and the savagery and beauty that define it as well as the freedom offered to those who seek its treasures. This is a tremendous book highly recommended and I eagerly look forward to book two, The Sound of Thunder.

No one does Africa better than Wilbur Smith...

This is the first book of the Courtney series and where you should start if you want to dive into an engrossing saga that tells the story of modern man's impact on the African continent at the same time that it reveals the riveting tale of a family's constantly changing fortune and lasting legacy. Wilbur Smith brings it all alive with vivid descriptions and superb pacing. If occasionally he spends a little more time on battle scenes or the unfolding of history than I would like, I can easily forgive him because his characters grab hold of you and won't let go. You simply must find out what's happening to them...and then there's Africa itself beguiling you with its amazing wildlife and native peoples. No one does Africa better than Wilbur Smith...

A disappointment

The first couple of hundred pages made interesting reading for a young teenage male. As the book drags on the redundancies -- male friendship, fighting, treating women like crap -- begin to overwhelm the reader. The final hundred or two hundred pages were just absolutely boring.

An excellent read

If you like adventure or historical fiction, or just a good story, then I'd highly recommend "When the Lion Feeds", the first in the original Courtney trilogy by Wilbur Smith, set in east Africa prior to WWI. Smith is not only a great writer, but a superb story teller. This was a real page turner for me, and the ending will leave you scrambling for the next book in the series. Highly recommended.

Not my genre

I found the writing pedestrian and the story boring. And it should not have been. So.

This book has been the top of my best book list

Read this in 1972 while living in Australia. A bunch of us passed it around and when we left I toke it. Shared it with a friend who to it with her when she moved. Was not published in US but managed to get one from England. Lent it out. Didn't come back. Didn't learn did it again. This is my last one it will not leave my sight I even bought Audio version. It is the start of a series and if you haven't read Wilbur Smith I highly recommend the Courtney series which starts with "When the lion feeds" a real sleeper. If your saying to your self she probably hasn't read much. Think again.
