Features & Highlights

  • Talk about unlucky sevens. An hour ago, seventeen-year-old, seven months pregnant Novalee Nation was heading for California with her boyfriend. Now she finds herself stranded at a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, with just $7.77 in change. But Novalee is about to discover hidden treasures in this small Southwest town--a group of down-to-earth, deeply caring people willing to help a homeless, jobless girl living secretly in a Wal-Mart. From Bible-thumping blue-haired Sister Thelma Husband to eccentric librarian Forney Hull who loves Novalee more than she loves herself, they are about to take her--and you, too--on a moving, funny, and unforgettable journey to . . . Where the Heart Is.

Great book!

I have watched the movie to this book probably a million times and I finally read the book. "Whoa," was what I first thought because I've never read a book whose movie actually matches it point by point! Of course, the book had a little more details that the movie didn't have. For instance, Willy Jack was much more of a bastard in the book than in the movie which I didn't think was possible but I was sure proved wrong. However, I would say the biggest difference between the book and the movie is that Novalee's unlucky number in the book is really 7 not 5 and compared to other movies that are made from books I'd say that isn't a big difference at all! Billie Letts did a great job with this and I'm surprised the book or even the movie isn't more popular. I know I will read this as many times as I have watched the movie, if not more.

Not worth the Time

So so. Good for US readers. Plot not believable. Character unrealistic.

Refreshingly sweet story

This story about Novalee Nation and her fight to succeed in spite of a multitude of obstacles in her way is a refreshing alternative to many of the complicated plots of more modern times. I enjoyed reading this story again and found that the movie based on the book follows the story very well.

Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts

In this story Novalee Nation discovers what it is like to have a real and loving family. The book starts of with Novalee being left at Wal-Mart by her out-to-get-rich-quick boyfriend. While trying to figure out what to do Novalee runs into a woman who calls herself Sister Husband. After being let down by her own greed mother, Novalee decides to take Sister up on her offer of welcome. From then on Novalee experiences even more of what she was always missing in life. To raising her daughter, helping others, and discovering her love to take pictures Billie Letts' character Novalee and all the others will take you for one of the greatest adventures of your life. I recommend this book for people of all ages. You will laugh and cry all the way through the entire book. Mrs. Letts has done a remarkable job of writing this book. This book was also chosen for Oprah's Book Club. After reading this book I am very sure you will agree with me that it is one of a kind. Much easier to read than anything Shakespeare could come up with. All will easily understand the themes and social issues involved. Since this book is more modern than any of Shakespeare's works you will not have to learn a totally different language to comprehend it.

Very good book

This book was recently made into a movie starring Natalie Portman. The first time I saw the movie I thought it was good if not a little cheesy. I saw it again and realized under the cheese it was really great. I happened upon the book at a library book sale and decided to give it a try. Boy am I glad I did. First of all, the movie, although changing a few details here and there, was very true to the book, even down to exact sections of dialogue. But the book went even further and expanded Novalee's life and the lives of those around her. It's been taking me a while to get through books these days, but I just sped through this one; I couldn't put it down.
