Features & Highlights

  • The Greatest Western Writer Of The 21st Century
  • From America's most popular, bestselling Western writer, each novel in this brilliant new series follows the trail of a different gun--each gun with its own fiery story to tell.
  • On the American frontier, every gun tells a story.
  • A boy in Texas waits for a Christmas present he chose from a Montgomery Ward catalog. The present, a brand new, lever action Winchester 1886 and a box of its big .50-caliber slugs, never makes it there. Instead, the rifle is caught up in a train robbery and starts a long and violent journey of its own--from the hands of a notorious, kill-crazy outlaw to an Apache renegade to a hardscrabble rancher and beyond. But while the prized Winchester is wandering the West--aimed, fired, battered and bartered--Deputy U.S. Marshal Jimmy Mann is hunting for the outlaw who robbed the train in Texas. The only clue he has is this prized and highly coveted weapon. What stands in his way are storms, Indians, thieves, a lot of bloody deaths--and a merciless desperado just waiting to kill the lawman on his trail...

A story that follows the new Winchester Model 1886 .50-100-450 caliber as it moves throgh the hands of various characters.

This is quite a story! It's one whose plot concept I've never before experienced. Who would dream up the idea of following the movements of a famous new rifle through the still wild and wooly times of the late 1880s in our Western Territories? Well, J. A. Johnstone (nephew of the now deceased William W. Johnstone) did it marvelously. There are loads of action-filled situations which are described so well that you feel you are there in person. It ends most dramatically and the short Epilogue leaves you thirsting for more titles which continue following this famous long rifle which again rests in the hands of a Deputy U. S. Marshall who is the nephew of the uncle (also a famous deputy U. S. Marshall) who died killing the most ruthless outlaw of the era while also retrieving the Winchester Model 1886 which he had intended to present to this nephew in the first place as a special gift from his uncle.

Whew! I sure hope the author continues these stories in multiple titles which comprise a WHOLE SERIES of such books.

Johnstone at his best!

I love the Johnstones' westerns. They're always action-packed and entertaining. They also strive for historical accuracy and move like wildfire.Highly recommended.

Better than I expected; not a good ending but good writing and good characters, and justice was served!

I thought this would be similar to the previous books about Western outlaws, like John Wesley Hardin, which was pretty weak. These Bill Johnstone books don't have the "fiction" notice on the title page - but they are! And they tend to portray gunman like Hardin as better than they were. I have skipped the following novels by the author writing those books.
This book is also fiction, but the publisher seems to treat it as a true story.
I have to admit it's better than the outlaw book, and it has some good characters and the relationships were reasonable. And it was easy reading; good writing with only a few unusual words for a Western. Probably close to Bill Johnstone's writing style.
But I like my Westerns to have decent endings, this one ended badly. A perfect chance to end a "fiction" story with a pleasant ending with a happy couple was really passed up for "realism". But It was good that the kid got the gun and the badge!

loved the action

The Old West brings to mind a raw, unbroken and lawless time in history. What draws readers of all ages to books that capture the imagination and heart of audiences? For me, it is the stories that bring to life both fictional and historical characters along with the lawless and the lawful. It also is a timeframe to get lost in where daily living was treacherous and it took hard work to eke out a living with families under threat from various people or diseases.
Most of all I love westerns that are well written and tell stories without describing gruesome details, leaving that to the imagination of readers. In this novel, I have to say the Johnstones outdid themselves! Here is tale that has a variety of storylines such as a family of lawmen who passed down their convictions from generation to generation. The plot also has readers following this special rifle to see if it arrives to its final destination safely or if it is stolen and used for nefarious reasons.
Authors that write with such knowledge along with a great imagination are authors to go back to again and again as they bring more wonderful tales to enjoy. The Johnstones excel at this and have for years. I hope you will read their wonderful books too. My next book to enjoy will be Winchester 1887. Look up the authors’ website and consider joining their book club so you can receive their newest books every month for a whole year! Plus, they provide a book list so readers can locate books in the multiple series that are available! Join me in the old west and get ready for action, adventure and suspense!
So mount up, gear up and let’s ride!
