Description

"A highly suspenseful plot and a moving resolution distinguish Saylor’s masterful third novel featuring Roman sleuth Gordianus the Finder." - Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Every bit as good as its history- and tension-packed predecessors…sustains a high level of suspense, while Saylor gives readers great sandals-on-the-ground details of the ancient world." - Booklist (starred review)"Saylor has concocted one of his best novels so far with this tale of intrigue and extraordinarily bloody reckonings...an international thriller, with espionage, world-shaking events, and plenty of plots, plans, and conspiracies." - Edge Boston"The series has been rejuvenated by the younger hero and is now better than ever. ... [Saylor] the undisputed master of the Roman historical mystery." - Historical Novel Society"With its expert mix of comedy and tragedy, Wrath may be Saylor's most thought-provoking work, a book that shows sympathy for all while asking us to ponder mankind's seemingly limitless capacity to do terrible things, then as now." - USA Today Steven Saylor is the author of the long running Roma Sub Rosaxa0seriesxa0featuring Gordianus the Finder, as well as the New York Times bestselling novel, Roma and its follow-up, Empire . Features & Highlights

  • In 88 B.C., it seems as if the entire ancient world is at war. In the west, the Italian states are rebelling against Rome; in the east, Mithridates is marching through and conquering the Roman Asian provinces. Even in the relatively calm Alexandria, a coup has brought a new Pharaoh to power and chaos to the streets. The young Gordianus has been waiting out the chaos in Alexandria, with Bethesda, when he gets a cryptic message from his former tutor and friend, Antipater. Now in Ephesus, as part of Mithridates' entourage, Antipater seems to think that his life is in imminent danger. To rescue him, Gordianus concocts a daring, even foolhardy, scheme to go "behind enemy lines" and bring Antipater to safety. But there are powerful, and deadly forces, at work here, which have their own plans for Gordianus. Not entirely sure whether he's a player or a pawn, Gordianus must unravel the mystery behind the message if he's to save himself and the people he holds most dear.

Lively Historical Adventure

You really should read the Seven Wonders before this one, and Raiders of the Nile would be a plus. Young Gordianus rushes into another crisis without thinking it through. But then, he is young. We know that he will survive this latest impulse because "Roman Blood" follows ( or does it?) Saylor leaves several opportunities for more adventures of Young Gordianus to occur and I hope he has more up his toga sleeve. As always, his end notes provide documentation for the major events but he puts flesh on the characters.

This book arrived in the same mediocre condition - unknown substances on the covers and corners / pages damaged by poor packing and USPS using the box ( apparently ) for destructive testing. Looked like it had been dropped, kicked, and crushed.

Can the furies be placated?

After receiving a mysterious missive from his old friend and tutor, Gordianus starts an extremely dangerous mission to rescue Zotico of Zeugma. But nothing is truly clear in this mission, and our young hero must go to the most dangerous place in the world for a Roman citizen.

Saylor nails it again, with another wonderful mystery in the ancient world. In the middle of powerful politicians he will have to try to rescue a loyal ally, to free an untrustworthy friend, to save a sacrificial lamb, to disturb a placating ritual and the lives of a multitude. You will have to read this fascinating novel to find out if Gordianus manages to complete all those tasks.

There are some weak spots and a deus ex machina situation which is so in your face that I believe that the author done it on purpose (to simulate the ancient plays). But that should be addressed in the final notes.

It’s incredible that after so many years I still want to know everything about Gordianus. I will keep faithful to the series.

Easy to read

Easy to read, seems like it's written for high school students. It's not nearly as erudite or well written than his earlier novels. The writing seems to parallel Gordianus' age, much more juvenile than the mature writing from the earlier novels.

Historically acccurate and highly entertaining

Saylor's characters just spring to life. I'm really enjoying reading about the eunuchs Kettel and Berynus, and hope there is much more to come in other Gordianus stories that I have yet to read.
