WOW!!!!!" u200b - John Around The Corner Reviews AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Q: What was your inspiration for this unique story? A: The idea for 4 Years Trapped in My Mind Palace came to me after watching a news story about a man who suffered a similar fate as Aaron. He contracted a rare form of meningitis as a boy that caused full paralysis. Though he was still alive, he was trapped in his mind for nearly fourteen years, aware of everything going on around him, but no one knew it. Eventually, he recovered limited mobility and speech, and was lucky enough to find love and be married. This amazing story pulled my thoughts toward a few elderly men I knew, who in a sense were also trapped in their own minds, but their imprisonment was due to the suffering caused by dementia and Alzheimer's disease. These men were once strong, witty, vibrant, and full of life, with years of experiences and amazing stories to tell. But over time, their diseases took away those memories and/or jumbled them with others, leaving their family and friends to watch their slow and sad decline.Merging these two experiences together, Aaron and Solomon's story developed-- a coming-of-age story entwined with an end-of-age story written with a hint of nostalgia, a hint of the whimsical unknown, and a heart-warming hope for the beauty of life.I really tried to write the story in the tradition of Mitch Albom, merging a bit of the Back to the Future humor and plot twists with the inspirational, feel-good, warm-and-fuzzies of Tuesday's with Morrie. Q: There's quite a bit of historical fiction in the novel. Did you do a lot of research? A: As the story unfolded, I soon realized I was very much writing a historical fiction that spanned sixty years between the 1920's to the 1980's. This led to more research than I had originally anticipated, but it also came with the added bonus of some very cool discoveries and interesting facts--though not everything is fact. For the sake of the story, I took a few artistic liberties along the way. Q: What artistic liberties did you take? A: At the end of the book, I have an author's note that gives insights to scenes from the story, explaining where the ideas originated and separating historical fact from fiction. There's a bit of time travel aspect to the story, and for the most part I stayed true to historical accounts. I only tweaked things a bit to include celebrities from those time periods as they interacted with our two main characters. Q: Was there a passage that really struck a chord with you as you were writing? A: There were a few scenes where I laughed out loud and where I cried real tears as I wrote them. Since I do most of my writing at the local library, this led to some odd looks from library patrons as they passed the table where I laughed and cried. But there is one line in particular that I love. It comes from our aging jazz musician, Solomon, as he talks about music and life with his young roommate. "We're a regular mixed-up group. But I tell you what, Aaron. It's good to have a melting pot of friends. You need a little variety in your life. It's like music. We're all different and play our own instruments, but to make music, real, beautiful music, you gotta blend together." Solomon gave me a wink. "It's all about playing in harmony." I just love these sentiments from Solomon. Music, especially jazz, is such an important part of the story, and Solomon really pulls the jazz music aspect into their lives in such a beautiful way. Q: Is this a good story for a book club or school group? A: Yes! And I'd love to join any book clubs via video chat to discuss the story. At the back of the book, I've also included a number of discussion questions for book clubs and school groups to use in their meetings. Q: What age group is this book recommended for? A: I really wanted to write something for all ages that both my kids and grandparents could enjoy. There's no bad language, sex scenes, or graphic violence in the story, but there are some heavy themes with illness, death, World War II, and a scene in a concentration camp. I tried to bring the reader into the scene, feel those moments, but not drudge them through the mud of graphic detail as I worked to keep it age appropriate. With that said, I would recommend 10+ as the age recommendation. My 7, 9, and 11 year old children all read the story on their own, but they're avid readers and I'd say 10+ as a general rule of thumb. It's been fascinating to hear from parents who read the story with their children, elderly readers who really connected with the characters and loved the story, and young singles who equally enjoyed the book. It really is a story for all ages.

Features & Highlights

  • I was paralyzed—trapped in my own mind. The friendship of a crazy old man was my way out.
  • 14-year old Aaron Greenburg is trapped in a vegetative state. He's awake and aware of everything around him, but the doctors don't realize it. After being placed in a care facility, he receives a new roommate--an old eccentric jazz musician with dementia. When Aaron talks in his mind to stay sane, the old man hears his thoughts and replies. But no one believes the old man because they think he's crazy. And when the old man thinks he's living in the past with his dementia episodes, it pulls Aaron into those moments in time and he gets to experience 1920's New York City, getting into a scuffle with the mob in a Chicago nightclub, fighting in World War II, and much more as the two develop an unlikely and unique friendship.4 Years Trapped in My Mind Palace is a humorous and heartwarming coming-of-age story, entwined with an end-of-age story, that will capture your imagination and renew your faith in the power of friendship.

Loved it!

I have to admit, I'm haven't always been keen on reading independently published books. Sometimes they're pretty painful and I figured if they can't land a publisher...boy was I wrong! Not all indie authors are created equal! I met Johan Twiss and heard about this story at my library and was intrigued. I'm so glad I took a chance and bought it! I was hooked from the beginning and engaged all the way through. I loved the characters, the history, the music references, and the hopeful message. I also really loved how so many of my questions about history and has writing process were answered in the afterward. A+ Johan Twiss! Now I can't wait to read your other books too!

Johan Twiss has a hit!

I picked up this book out of curiosity and an interest in Johan's work. I was rewarded with a touching story that blends life lessons, adventure, history, and a little fantasy in a way that is entertaining and instructional. The author demonstrates an ability to speak to young and old alike in weaving a story that keeps both groups engaged. The story's general concept and progression intrigued me and I was in tears at its conclusion. As a parent, I also appreciate that it is good, clean fun. Bravo!

A Marvelously Crafted Tale of Suspense, Adventure, Fantasy, Communication and Hope!

4 Years Trapped in My Mind Place - by Johan Twiss: I dive into every book I am sent - to read - and I attempt to give an honest fair and balanced review from my perspective and only mine - of how it affects me, informs me, touches me, or inspires me, and if it enlightens or moves me in some way. And also if it does not do that to or for me.
Beyond finding a few dozen grammar hiccups throughout this book (missing words, wrong words and such that affected the flow at times) and that makes the reader stop - to mentally interpret and fix the error - before proceeding - as it halts the experience and one's concentration, when speeding through an exciting scene to see what happens to a character. I found this book to be fascinating, gripping and exciting. Too bad Mr. Meyers missed quite a few small goofs - had he been more attentive - so this would not happen. Perhaps the author needs a better proofreader.
In any case and in spite of that - "I loved this book". I literally could not put it down unless absolutely necessary. Mr. Twiss has an uncanny and rare talent to pull you into the characters and you feel like you are standing, sitting, hiding right there at the stadium, fighting ring or in the Foxhole with those men.
I am one who likes to carry the books I review around physically, (I am not a Kindle dude or download artist) which is just my way, and bookmarking or writing comments in the margins like I have done all my life is how I spend my time reviewing. Okay I am a dinosaur (I know) but I like to go back and remember or reread parts to comment on - if necessary or just read something in print again. Hey, we all have our quirks. And I want to be totally honest - on this score - I have read dozens of books and been requested to review a plethora of them. Many of them have captivated me and many of them have bored me - but I finish them anyway - and gave a fair assessment of their overall worth to me. And many of them have made me "better" for having read them.
This is one of those books, without any doubt, it is one of those books. Only a few have so moved me like Johan Twiss and his "4 Years Trapped in my Mind Place" has. I was thrilled with the story, the fantasy, and the reality and the mental exercise of being pulled along at a breakneck speed from story to story. Not a single boring page in it! . It is about innate unshakable friendships, (hard to find these days) communication, compassion and just a very touching personal story that both challenges you to let yourself feel and that causes you to dream bigger than you might have before.
Is it fiction? Who cares! - It was one of those books and stories that you lose yourself in and actually become the character like only a few authors can really do to the reader. The last ones - that did this for me were "The Forgotten Man" by J Pepper Bryars, "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" & "For One More Day" by Mitch Albom. All unique, wonderful tales that all engulf you in their mysteries and plot .
And it this book - You laugh, you smile, you cry, you weep, and you cheer and you are both shocked and lifted up by its content. THIS BOOK, this book, one I thought that would not excite me, from looking just at the cover and the title, or take me to a place of wonder and imagination or awe. Did Just That! It grabbed me from page two by my mental, emotional compassionate self and my personal adventurism and would simply not let go. Every chance I got I grabbed it to read some more, whether in the car waiting for the wife to finish her exchange duties at Malls - LOL, or at work with a spare moment, or even when eating at a restaurant and waiting for food. I reached for This Book, "Trapped in my Mind Place" and wanted to go there and to the next adventure with Aaron and Solomon and explore that wondrous fantasy world, the adventure and the quest to understand.
Easy to read format. It truly had me looking and feeling completely different about coma patients, people on life support and those like Aaron - trapped within themselves - and how we deal with them. And also the problems of older folks we meet. This Book will have a special place on my shelves with this review tucked in like many of others, I have had the pleasurable experienced to review.
It will sit next to other special works - that touched my soul with delight and amazement and I will revisit it in my mind's eye often, to remember the lesson of hope, friendship, compassion and intellectual intrigue that only Johan Twiss could have given me with this special story - that heralds the authors rare talents and ability to bring one from mere words on paper - to a life-like experience - through fiction and truth - into a seemingly real or imaginary - life experience. I would love to review more of his works when available and I am sure the writing style used and the ease and flowing nature of his adventures will intrigue any and all readers of this very down to earth work. Young or old it was just a fascinating read.
This book will bring you to an appreciation of your most basic human physical, mental, emotional and interactive abilities and blessings in life, and your awareness of things around you and what the utter loss of them can do to your mind. And it will give you a better appreciation and realization that things could be much, much worse for you (yes - any one of us). To be Aaron Greenburg would sober any complainer of the normal lives we (they) live and how we all take them for granted and the great compassion we should all have for any of the thousands who know lay as he did or does - in this story "Trapped in his own mind".
But the greatest lesson is that there is hope and grace in all things if we look, seek and recognize the blessings presented to each of us by Gate, God, the Force, the Universe, Cosmos or just a Gabby Old Man in the bed next to us - with a talent to connect!
A great read! Thank you Johan Twiss - a pleasure to read and a truly inspiration. HIGHLY Recommended.

Holds You Captive Until the End!

I highly recommend this book to everyone. This was a selection for our monthly book club and I wasn't sure what to expect based on the title. Let me just say, it didn't disappoint. It draws you in from the onset and then holds you captive until the conclusion. It is definitely a "must read".

This was a gift for a 12 year old and he loved it!

I loved that I could give it with confidence it would not offend this young man with any inappropriate language or behaviors. I was thrilled to hear he read it without stopping until he finished. Great gift!
