Description

About the Author John J. Nitti earned a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was a professor of Spanish and Portuguese for more than fifteen years. His history with exploring Old Spanish lexicography led to major government funding from the U.S. and Spain, allowing him (along with his mentor, Lloyd Kasten) to devise innovative ways to bring computing to bear on the Old Spanish Dictionary project, which the Wisconsin Seminary of Medieval Spanish Studies had been at work on since the 1930s. In addition to his directorship of the Old Spanish Dictionary project (1975–2001), Nitti and Kasten founded the Hispanic Seminary of Medieval Studies (HSMS), initially to disseminate the large numbers of transcripts and other materials that the dictionary project was producing. Today, this nonprofit organization become an important publisher of texts in Hispanomedievalism and related fields.Born in Manhattan, New York, and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Michael Ferreira received his doctoral degree in Hispanic Philology and Linguistics and his M.A. in Luso-Brazilian Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Ferreira is an associate professor and director of the Portuguese language program in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Georgetown University. He also teaches in the Center for Latin American Studies in the School of Foreign Service. He has edited and transcribed several Old and Early Portuguese texts, and currently is the director of the Dictionary of the Old Portuguese Language Project. He has taught workshops in Portugal and Brazil on paleography, electronic transcription and edition of Old Portuguese texts, as well as computer-based lexicography techniques.

If you already have the 2nd edition, DO NOT BUY THIS. It's the same book.

I've been focusing on romance languages lately and find it convenient that the Spanish, Italian, and French 501 books have the same format. It helps with comparing how the tenses differ between the languages. I was let down by this book as this new edition seems to be the exact same content as the old 2nd edition. All that is different is the new colored cover (the content is still black and white). I was hoping that they at least change the formatting and add color to make it easier on the eyes and more consistent with their other language verb books. Unfortunately, they did nothing new with Portuguese.

The least Barron's could have done was not advertise this as the 3rd edition. That is misleading. At least I got a refund.

Very disappointed!

I just received the new edition of the 501 Portuguese Verbs (3rd Edition) and I have to say I'm really unimpressed. I was hoping it would be similar to the content, quality, and layout of the 501 Spanish Verbs (7th Edition) book (which is excellent). However, it looks like very little time and effort was actually put into this book. It's about as plain as it gets. Very little useful information is given along with each verb except for a few example phrases at the bottom of each page. There is also a general lack of additional helps and information that is abundant in the Spanish edition. Adding insult to injury, it's more expensive than the Spanish edition. You may want to look at this book in a brick and mortar store before deciding whether this will meet your needs. I wish I had. I find this book no more useful than just looking up verb conjugations on the Internet.

Indispensable...But One Mistake

Overall, an indispensable book. I would give it five stars...but there appears to be a major mistake on page 447 regarding the Preterite Indicative (simple past) tense for the verb "ser". What is shown appears to be the conjugation for the verb "ir." Am I the only one who has noticed this? Or am I just mistaken?

Excellent Resource for Beginners

I especially like the glossary of additional verbs listed in the back of this book. The example uses of the verb at the bottom of each page are helpful. I think the book would be an even better resource if each tense of the verb was translated into English.

Buy this.

I highly recommend this book and all other books of the 501 verb series. I just read two verbs each day. I might not remember but by the end I know all of the verb grammar by heart without effort to try and remember. And the beginning stuff is in my subconscious anyways. If want to learn Portuguese this is a good starting point for verbs. This and a general grammar book together are enough of a base. Do this with music or movies and that’s enough to become conversational.

Great Conjugation Table

Barron's makes some of the best books for language learning.
I purchased this book because i bought the "501 Spanish Verbs" already and liked the conjugation table and selection of verbs.
Only complaint about this book is that the paper is not as dense as the "501 Spanish Verbs".

Verbs. That’s it. Very technical.

This book is exactly what it says. 501 verbs conjugated every way you’d like. It’s a great reference but it is aimed at an audience with strong understanding of all the technicalities of grammar, tenses and usages. For me, it’s helpful but not a stand alone tool.

Been using this helps

Helps when reading a book in Portuguese as can see what the various verb tenses mean. Funny how they don't use pronouns sometimes and you have to figure what they're talking about by looking at the verb and figuring which pronoun it would be using based on the conjugation. I don't think they do that in French.

Not as Good as 501 Spanish Verbs

This does not contain often used verbs. Even though many of the oft used verbs are regular and you can follow the regular conjugations, it does not even list many of those common verbs.
