Features & Highlights

  • An enchanting underground world hides sinister secrets in this YA fantasy from award-winning author Frances Hardinge
  • An ALA/ALSC Notable Children’s Book
  • In the underground city of Caverna, the world’s most skilled craftspeople toil in the darkness to create delicacies beyond compare—wines that remove memories, cheeses that make you hallucinate, and perfumes that convince you to trust the wearer, even as he slits your throat. On the surface, the people of Caverna seem ordinary, except for one thing: their faces are as blank as untouched snow. Expressions must be learned, and only the famous Facesmiths can teach a person to express (or fake) joy, despair, or fear—at a steep price. Into this dark and distrustful world comes Neverfell, a girl with no memory of her past and a face so terrifying to those around her that she must wear a mask at all times. Neverfell’s expressions are as varied and dynamic as those of the most skilled Facesmiths, except hers are entirely genuine. And that makes her very dangerous indeed . . .

Brilliant World Building

Neverfell is a 12-year-old girl who can't remember her past. At the age of five, she is found by a cheese-maker in the underground world of Caverna. She soon becomes entangled in a complicated game of power. The characters in this world wear masks to depict emotions, while never truly feeling them. Neverfell's face, full of expression and feeling, is what makes her so different and dangerous.

The descriptive writing in this book is what makes it so remarkable. It is rare to have scenes described so vividly that the reader cannot help but see the world in his or her mind. The author is without a doubt, a gifted wordsmith.

The storyline is rather dark, and some parts may not be suitable for young or sensitive middle-grade readers. That said, all the twists and turns and subplots keep the reader engaged. The characters are generally well-fleshed. A little more background on the Kleptomancer would've been nice. And it is a bit of a stretch that Neverfell, an uneducated, rather backward child at the start of the story, becomes a clever and formidable foe to the antagonists by the end. Nevertheless, this is a well-written story, and certainly worth reading.
