She is the author of four novels, one children's book, and one collection of humorous essays. She originally self-published A Scattered Life as an e-book for Amazon's Kindle. McQuestion lives with her family in Hartland, Wisconsin.

Features & Highlights

  • Free-spirit Skyla Plinka has found the love and stability she always wanted in her reliable husband Thomas. Settling into her new family and roles as wife and mother, life in rural Wisconsin is satisfying, but can’t seem to quell Skyla’s growing sense of restlessness. Her only reprieve is her growing friendship with neighbor Roxanne, who has five kids (and counting) and a life in constant disarray – but also a life filled with laughter and love.   Much to the dismay of her intrusive mother-in-law, Audrey, Skyla takes a part-time job at the local bookstore and slowly begins to rediscover her voice, independence and confidence. Throughout one pivotal year in the life of Skyla, Audrey and Roxanne, all three very different women will learn what it means to love unconditionally. With the storytelling ingenuity of Anne Tyler, the writing talent of Jodi Picoult, and the subtlty of Alice Munro, McQuestion offers a satisfying debut that proves she is a gifted portraitist, a natural storyteller and an author to watch.

Simply An Amazing Book

Karen McQuestion put out an amazing book in "A Scattered Life." The details she pays to narration of the characters and their surrounding are a few of the things I liked about her writing still. Most importantly, the story was fantastic. Without giving away anything regarding the story, I'll just say this is an amazing book that I highly recommend.

A little disappointed

I bought this book for an upcoming beach vacation and I was disappointed with it. I didn't end up ever liking the characters much, didn't care what would happen to them in the end and some of the dialog was laughable. I really had a hard time relating to why they were so miserable.

"There's a lot of love out there, Skyla, if you'll just let people into your life. Open your heart."

My introduction to Karen McQuestions was her most recent book, "Hello Love," which I thoroughly enjoyed. Through our local library system I acquired "A Scatterede Life," which, while written earlier, is a book of wonderful insight. Told through three female characters, Skyla, marrried with a daughter on whom she dotes, a woman who has put down roots for far longer than her earlier life might have indicated she ever would; Audery, Skyla's mother- in-law, a controlling woman who no longer finds the satisfaction in husband and family she once did, for they seem to just take her for granted; and Roxanne, a woman who relishes being a mother, loves caring for her children especially when they are babies, continues to love them as they grow but is always looking to becoming pregnant again, set on having twelve children one day, lamenting that at five kids, she's fallen short. These are very intriguing women, and the author develops them fully as her story plays out over a period of time in a small Wisconsin town. I hated seeing the story come to an end, and an almost shattering ending it reaches. There is such a vividness in the author's description of home, the belongings of home, the workplace Skyla finds some satisfaction in, and the path Skyla and Audrey in particular travel as they come to understand and appreciate one another so much more fully. This is a book I'd like a copy of to share with friends. And Karen McQuestion, I anxiously look forward to what comes next. You're an enormously talented and gifted writer, Karen!

Enjoyable

This book was a delightful read. Spoiler alert: I cried through the last couple of chapters. A story of our views of ourselves vs. how others see us. A book of friendship. It will make you pick up the phone to call the people you love. Definitely recommend. I read it in 2 sittings.
