This book had me from the start and wouldn't let me go." ~ SDFlash "Booklist" Review 2/1/97 Gannon writes brilliantly of the high hopes and shattered dreams, the love, laughter, tears, and pain that make up the family experience. His wonderfully dense and complex characters and his provocative plot combine to produce a heartrending, heartwarming novel. An impressive debut. --Emily MeltonI recently retired as a police officer, serving over 30 years, in the Los Angeles area. I enjoy reading police novels. I am very critical on the research, the characters, the police officers, and the suspects in each book. Steve Gannon did an excellent job with his research.xa0I hope more "Dan Kane" novels follow. xa0~ Henry Bud JohnsonDan Kane is one of the most multi-layered son-of-a-bitch fathers that one can't help want to know as you laugh at his outrageous sexist humor, be in awe of his courage under fire, want to sit at his table when he cooks a Friday night dinner, and yet cringe when his dark side takes hold. Do not miss this experience. ~ Marc Seifer "Author"Makes Pat Conroy's Great Santini look like Ward Cleaver. xa0Characters that involve readers from the beginning . . . Rarelyxa0does a first novel come along that is both compassionate and unflinching in its portrayal of a family shattered by tragedy. xa0In this intense and poignant debut, Steve Gannon tells a story that is impossible to put down--and impossible to forget. Detective Daniel Kane is the self-proclaimed king of his castle-- his California beachfront home--and a loving despot to his subjects: his wife, Catheryn, and his four children, Tommy, Travis, Allison, and Nate. With a relentless perfectionism and razon-edge cynicism born of years on the LAPD, Kane is determined to recast his children in his own image, steeling them to face a harsh and violent world. Although Catheryn struggles to soften the rigors of his exacting love, over the course of a single, shattering summer, Kane's expectations will bring tragedy to each of his children, plunging the entire family into an abyss of heartbreak that will test the limits of its strength. xa0Yet, in a devestating moment that changes all of the Kanes forever, it is Travis alone who will find the courage to defy his father and, ultimately, to redeem him. Told against a a finely drawn backdrop ranging from the High Sierra to the beaches of Malibu and the gritty streets of Los Angeles, "A Song for the Asking" is an electrifying first novel--deeply moving, compelling, and filled with candor, compassion, and humor--signaling the emergence of a remarkable new talent. xa0(From Bantam Hardcover Edition) From the drama of the High Sierra to the beaches of Malibu and the crime-ridden streets of Los Angeles, "A Song for the Asking" tells the story of a family struck by tragedy . . . and of the courage each member must find to survive. xa0Filled with candor, compassion, and humor, Steve Gannon's "A Song for the Asking" is a deeply moving novel that celebrates the enduring strength of the family spirit. xa0(From Trade Paperback Edition) STEVE GANNON is the author of the bestselling Kane Novels, which include A Song for the Asking , first published by Bantam Books.xa0 Gannon divides his time between Italy and Idaho, living in two of the most beautiful places on earth.xa0 In Idaho he spends his days skiing, whitewater kayaking, and writing.xa0 In Italy Gannon also continues to write, while enjoying the Italian people, food, history, culture, and learning the Italian language.xa0xa0He is married to international performing artist, pianist Susan Spelius Gannon. To contact Steve, purchase books, or to join his email list to receive his blog and updates on new releases, visit his website at: stevegannonauthor.com Read more

Kane the Lout - Forget It

Absolutely couldn’t get past how cruel Kane is to his wife and children. Gave it up one third of the way through. Why the author would portray the main character in such a way is beyond me. Some reviews hint that a tragedy befalls the family at some point and that may turn him around but it wasn’t worth the wait for me

Fast paced and a very enjoyable read!

From the first few pages, this book had me hooked! The writing is crisp, clean and a fast read. At the same time, the complex relationships and events keep you tethered! This is a wonderful family drama and detective novel. I quickly developed feelings and a heart for the entire family and couldn't wait to pick up Gannon's next work to see what else happens in their lives. I highly recommend this book for any adult that enjoys this genre! Excellent!

Family in Freefall

Other than the opening pages which are a preview of events to come this work will keep you reading straight through to the ending. From the beginning each member of the Kane family has their own issues. Many of the issues confronting the children have been caused, by pressures/expectations or lack thereof, created by their parents. There is mystery not only because the father is a homicide detective with the LAPD but how the family will work through the events of the summer. As the reader you sometimes will know more than the parents and need to walk a mile in each person's shoes. Something the main characters often do not do for each other. The ending will leave you aching to read "KANE" the next book in this series.

A Song for the Asking (A Kane Novel) e-book edition

Marvelous story. The father, Kane, in this story is so typical - a policeman who is actually a very good one. He is an alcoholic and becomes abusive, mentally and physically, when drunk. He tries very hard to be a good husband and father, but his actions, when drunk, make his children afraid of him. His son, Travis, is a talented pianist. His father repeatedly implies that Travis is a sissy, because he is a musician. (how sad that some people feel this way). His only daughter, Allison, never feels her father loves her. There are rare moments when Kane shows his soft, loving side; but too infrequently. I could not put this book down - don't miss this telling tale. Purchased from Amazon, I read this on my Kindle Fire.
