A Book Every Martial Artist or Athlete Should Read
"A Tooth from the Tiger's Mouth" is not only a suprisingly complete book concerning the treatment of athletic injuries, it is also extremely accessable to professional or layman alike. Author Tom Bisio comes to his knowledge not just through hard work and training, but via real life experience as a martial arts competitor and teacher. Bisio breaks down treatment into its essential, practical components which allows for coaches, instructors and competitors to actually use the information that he has to share in real time. He explains in depth why the early, proper treatment of injuries can save an athlete or martial artist from a lifetime of pain and struggle. And he does it in a no-nonsense, practical way that removes the cloak of mystery from Chinese medicine and reveals it as the practical, age-old science that it truly is.
A great, in depth book that anyone who has even a remote chance of being injured should have readily at hand.

Don't know of a better source for this information
What? I didn't write a review of this already?
I, like Mr. Bisio, am an Acupuncture Physician, Licensed Massage Therapist, have been a personal trainer in the past, and a martial arts practitioner for many years. My Master's degree in Chinese medicine completely skipped this subject, and this is maybe the only quality source for this information...I haven't found others. From his knowledge of movement and physical injury, acupuncture, manual body work to the formulas, tinctures, and other herbal products and processes, this is always on my book shelf. I don't get the opportunity to treat much injury/trauma at this time, but when I do...I run for this book, and sometimes, I read it just for fun.
A side not, I met a former student of Tom's in Ft. Lauderdale a year or so back, we both practice craniosacral therapy. This "south Florida" Tom practiced some of the tuina skills that he learned from Bisio and I was blown away. Far more in depth and meaningful than my 45 hours of training in medical school. Phenomenal work! Get the book! You will never regret it

A treasure
I am really into martial arts, and last year suffered a serious muscle tear. I certainly believe Western medicine has its place, but Western doctors were worse than useless to me in this case. The exercises in this book have been instrumental in getting me back on the mat again, and in putting my body back in balance so I don't risk such an injury again. It's also a great resource to have in the dojo for first aid--over the years I have seen bits and pieces of the stuff in this book used by various teachers (e.g. cupping, moxibustion, plasters), and having it all together in one handy volume is priceless. I'm so grateful to Tom Bisio for creating this book--and for helping me put myself back together.

Old but Still Good
This book is about how to treat injuries that an athlete might experience while competing or training to compete. The theory, the treatments and the materials used in the treatments are based upon Chinese traditional medicine which the author learned in his almost 30 years practicing martial arts in the United States and China. The author is highly qualified to write on this subject. He is a licensed practitioner of Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and herbalism.
The book is presented in four parts. Part I deals with the Principles of Chinese Sports Medicine; Part II deals with Injury Prevention by Exercise, Diet and Life Style; Part III summarizes the Therapies of Chinese Sports Medicine; and Part IV covers Treatments for Common Sports Injuries. Appendix 1 lists the components of a Chinese Sports Medicine First Aid Kit, and Appendix 2 lists sources for acquiring Chinese Herbs and Equipment.
Treatments, which cover 33 areas in alphabetical order, begin with Achilles' Tendonitis and end with Wrist Strain. Detailed information is provided on liniments, poultices, plasters, herbal soaks, acupoints, and massage.
In a number of instances, the Chinese treatment approach is at odds with Western medicine -- for example, to reduce the inflammation of a sprained ankle that is swollen, Western medicine recommends ice. Chinese medicine, which recommends using a Trauma Liniment, avoids the use of ice because ice has the side effect of reducing blood circulation and dissipating energy sent by the body to heal the damage done by the sprain.
A Tooth from the Tiger's Mouth is a reference book for dealing with common injuries using methods that have proven their worth over hundreds of years; it is a book that all martial artists should have in their library.

A Unique Book
[I bought this book elsewhere}
This book is one of a kind. I almost never give 5-star reviews, but there is no other book like it.
This book is well-written and well-organized. It can be read straight through, or browsed. (It has an extensive and useful index.)
Almost everything written in English about Chinese medicine is focused on acupuncture and herbology. However, Chinese medicine is a complex and broad art encompassing many other disciplines, theories and approaches. This book is a fine demonstrator of this fact.

Excellent book! Highly rated!
I think this book is underrated, perhaps overlooked by many. I found it to be an excellent 'go-to' book for sports injuries (which is why I bought it), and an excellent view into Chinese medicine as practiced today.
I recommend this if you are suffering from chronic injuries incurred weeks or months ago, and can't quite get that darn injury healed!
I found many of the liniments, plasters, herb compounds, etc on Amazon, too. Nice!
