Description

"In this debut full of genuine reflection and heartfelt humor, actor and comedian Foxx riffs on parenting (“You ain’t ready for it”) and the life experiences that gradually helped shape him as a father. . . Foxx writes in a jovial manner, with jokes flying constantly. . . Yet where this book truly excels is in its honesty, offering an intimate look past Jamie Foxx the famous actor to reveal a relatable figure."― Publishers Weekly, starred review “Wise, joyful and hilarious."― People "A practical, sometimes profane, always entertaining guide to the fine art of parenting."― Kirkus Reviews "In cheerfully meandering stories, Foxx displays his comedic timing and pacing and is always entertaining, blending the folksy yet hard-edged wisdom of his adoptive grandmother with hard-won, more worldly "New Dad" sensibilities. . . Foxx's parenting-advice book is the equivalent of a vitamin-packed smoothie: sweet, fun, and easy to enjoy, full of slyly concealed nourishment and goodness."― Booklist " Act Like You Got Some Sense —its title gleaned from a phrase his late grandmother Estelle told him often—hilariously and poignantly details [Foxx's] upbringing as well as his experiences raising daughters Corinne, 27, and Anelise, 13, while orbiting Hollywood as one of its biggest and hardest-working stars."― Men's Health "[R]eally funny. . . If you weren’t already a fan [of Foxx], you’ll be one after reading this heartfelt and honest book."― CNN "Foxx’s tales of fatherhood are heartwarming and humorous, and he offers sensible tips that serve as strong reminders of how to treat today’s youth with respect and patience. . . Features & Highlights

  • From Academy Award-winning multi-talent Jamie Foxx, a hilariously candid look at the joys and pitfalls of being the father of two daughters.
  • Jamie Foxx has won an Academy Award and a Grammy Award, laughed with sitting presidents, and partied with the biggest names in hip-hop. But he is most proud of his role as father to two very independent young women, Corinne and Anelise. Jamie might not always know what he’s doing when it comes to raising girls—especially when they talk to him about TikTok (PlikPlok?) and don’t share his enthusiasm for flashy Rolls Royces—but he does his best to show up for them every single day. Luckily, he has a strong example to follow: his beloved late grandmother, Estelle Marie Talley.  Jamie learned everything he knows about parenting from the fierce woman who raised him: As he puts it, she’s “Madea before Tyler Perry put on the pumps and the gray wig.”   In
  • Act Like You Got Some Sense
  • —a title inspired by Estelle—Jamie shares up close and personal stories about the tough love and old-school values he learned growing up in the small town of Terrell, Texas; his early days trying to make it in Hollywood; the joys and challenges of achieving stardom; and how each phase of his life shaped his parenting journey. Hilarious, poignant, and always brutally honest, this is Jamie Foxx like we’ve never seen him before.

Would be better if:

Jamie forgot to say Rated X. The stories are good BUT WHY the cursing. If you can get pass that it's enjoyable reading. I know his grandmother wouldn't go for that neither.

Quick Good read

I was able to read the book in a day, it was a easy and interesting read. Some stories I wanted to know more. But it’s known that the author is a good story teller. Learning more about his grandmother whom he has spoken fondly about even when he spoke of her firmness. His grandmother standing up in church declaring what she did was a standout moment in the book. How it stuck with him stood out as well.

His disappointment in how his parents wasn’t able to be there for him was apparent, Life as a parent in what clearly is different approach just based on his daughters age difference and his southern upbringing.

There were a couple of emotional moments that made the stories and author seem relatable.

That was horrible…..

The book was completely turn and the pages were not legible. It looked like someone let a child tear it up and spill something on the pages and the ink bleed

Borrow, don’t buy

Cursing in front of your children to show them the real you? This book was not what I expected and I agree with the “not so stellar” reviews. Borrow it from the library and don’t waste your money.

I absolutely loved Jamie Foxx’s POV on Parenting

I am a mom of two daughters and I found this book to be super relatable and inspiring! I loved reading Jamie Foxx’s POV on the parental figures in his life and his own take on parenting. Incredibly touching book for mom and dads to feel heard and seen. Thanks for the laughs and incredible words you wrote for your fans to read.

A good chuckle and some life lessons!

I didn’t know what to expect going into Jamie Foxx’s book, ACT LIKE YOU GOT SOME SENSE: AND OTHER THINGS MY DAUGHTER TAUGHT ME. Did I expect a pure laugh fest? Yes. Is that what this book was? Oh yes, but it was so much more!

I’m pleased that I had the opportunity to read both the audiobook and the physical copy of ACT LIKE YOU GOT SOME SENSE because I found myself absolutely living for Jamie Foxx to tell his story in his own words. It was very easy to catch his tone and inflection as you read the physical book, especially if you are a Foxx fan like I am, but the audiobook heightens the memoir to an extra degree.

What I enjoyed about this book is how passionate Foxx is about his family. Yes, this is a very not linear memoir about his history or daughters, but his love for grandmother and his daughters shines so brightly you can see why the cover is neon yellow to try to compete with it.

The other aspect that surprised me is that I thought this would just be a story like any other memoir. I didn’t expect to learn anything. Foxx drops life lessons and bits of wisdom along the way that he has learned. One of my favorites is:

“…and beautiful music and art can come from totally normal people who, like Ed (Sheeran), also accidentally get mustard stains on their shirts.”

It was a quick journey with Foxx - one I hope he will continue in years to come - but I’m thankful for it. I learned some lessons, and I laughed a lot. Definitely recommend this if you’re a Foxx fan, a memoir fan, or want a good chuckle.
