Good book, but the series isn't perfect

Bought 1-3 at a comic con so putting my review of 1-4 all together:
1: Slathbog's Gold: Think the Hobbit, as written by a YA author and D&D player, and you've got a pretty close idea to what this book is like. Very fun, and does a good job of addressing minutia of adventuring, such as travel, that many people will ignore.
2: Horn of Moran: A good but not fantastic continuation, my criticism here is that Alex starts emphasizing his prodigy status with regards to his magic (his arc over the series is a tad mary-sueish, but not too bad).
3: Albrek's Tomb: This book is mostly good, but then there's the big reveals (yes, plural, I'm including part of the epilogue as well as the major new ability he manifests in the finale) about Alex that I can't help but mentally compare to some of the more ludicrous Harry Potter fanfictions I've seen. The fact that he then comes up with the plan for a certain big public display (trying to dance around spoilers here) then makes him feel a little too cunning, I dunno maybe I just wasn't noticing his devious mind before this. Also hints at the presumed BBEG.
4: Sands of Nezza: Another fun adventure, ties up another loose end from the 1st book, points again towards the presumed BBEG, but again that mary-sue nature comes up again in the finale, with contrivances (understandable, but still flimsy) to stop Alex from just solving all the problems at once.
Will review book 5 separately, as hoo boy that final arc left me disappointed, to put it lightly.

A Great Leadin

In the Series this is not what I would call the all star, however it is great in that it helps progress the main character Alex along with moving the story into the next book, The Axe of Sundering. So all in all a good but not great read but a necessary setup for the next book.
