Features & Highlights

  • The White Table is set in many mess halls as a symbol for and remembrance to service members fallen, missing, or held captive in the line of duty. Solitary and solemn, it is the table where no one will ever sit. As a special gift to her Uncle John, Katie and her sisters are asked to help set the white table for dinner. As their mother explains the significance of each item placed on the table Katie comes to understand and appreciate the depth of sacrifice that her uncle, and each member of the Armed Forces and their families, may be called to give. It was just a little white table... but it felt as big as America when we helped Mama put each item on it and she told us why it was so important. "We use a Small Table, girls," she explained first, "to show one soldier's lonely battle against many. We cover it with a White Cloth to honor a soldier's pure heart when he answers his country's call to duty." "We place a Lemon Slice and Grains of Salt on a plate to show a captive soldier's bitter fate and the tears of families waiting for loved ones to return," she continued."We push an Empty Chair to the table for the missing soldiers who are not here..." Margot Theis Raven has been a professional writer working in the fields of radio, television, magazines, newspapers, and children's books for 30 years. Margot's first children's book, Angels in the Dust, won five national awards, including an IRATeacher's Choice Award. Her first book with Sleeping Bear Press, Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot, was the runner-up for the 2004 Texas Bluebonnet Award. She lives with her family in Charleston, South Carolina. Mike Benny's illustrations have appeared in Time, GQ, New Yorker and Sports Illustrated Magazines. He has also been awarded two Gold Medals from the Society of Illustrators. This is Mike's first children's book. He lives in Austin, Texas with his wife Mary Ann and daughter Adele.

A beautiful book!

The first time I read this book I almost cried! It is a beautifully written and illustrated book that explains the little known tradition of the POW/MIA table in words that a child can understand. I bought one for my son, and will now purchase another for my God Children.

Awesome book for teachers!

I absolutely loved this book. I had originally heard about it at a conference for history teachers. I had been looking for a kid to teenage friendly book that helped students understand the importance of our military. I read this book to my 6,7,and 8th grade classes, and we were all moved by the story. We set up a table honoring our veterans at our school's Veterans' Day Assembly. I highly recommend this book for teachers or parents who want to educate their kids on a wonderful way to honor and remember our veterans.

Great for teachers

This is a great way to teach children about the importance of our veterans and the reverence they deserve. I use this in my first grade classroom. We actually set up a white table and ate lunch in the room on Veteran's Day. It was a great experience and I am very happy to own this book to use year after year.

Every American should read this book! 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Every American should read this book! Everyone should understand the sacrifices our military, especially our POW’s make for our country. In the book it explains why we have the small white table set alone in military homes, VFW’s and bases around the world. It continues to explain what each item represents. Yes this is a young adult book, maybe 4th grade level. Yet I still believe so many Americans don’t know and need to know!

This book displays the wonderful appreciation for all our military men and women and ...

I have read this story to my 4th and 5th grade TAG students when discussing anything related to the military and veterans. This book displays the wonderful appreciation for all our military men and women and veterans who served through any war years. Their devotion, courage, and love for the USA is commendable. For all those who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice, this story displays the respect and admiration for them. May all the future generations be taught this by reading this well explained story!

America's White Table

Well illustrated, well written, to the point, meaningful, heartfelt, and helpful regarding one way Americans can remember their Prisoners of War and Missing in Action on Memorial Day and/or Veterans Day (Note: Memorial Day [last Monday in May each year] is for remembering those who have died in military service while fighting for America's freedom; Veterans Day [weekday closest to November 11 each year] is for saying thank you to those who were in military service and fought for that same freedom and are currently living. Prisoners of War or those Missing in Action can be persons in military service who have died or are still living.).[[ASIN:1585362166 America's White Table]]

Good reference

I am using this as a reference. Being a member of both the VFW and American Legion, I want to learn about the traditions and the ways to remember our POW/MIA's. There are several different ways to set up a POW/MIA table according to the internet and this is just one way to present it to our youth so they can understand and learn respect for our veterans.
