An Idiot Abroad: The Travel Diaries of Karl Pilkington

"An Idiot Abroad: The Travel Diaries of Karl Pilkington" is one of the funniest books I have ever read. It's an accompaniment to his fantastic television show "An Idiot Abroad" in which Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant get Karl to see the seven wonders of the world in a (sort of) travelogue format for Sky TV. Pilkington is caused massive amounts of grief by Gervais and Merchant who design itineraries and scenarios that Karl has no knowledge of and would never electively choose to participate in. These adventures are frequently punctuated with phone calls, voicemails, or texts from Ricky or Stephen ("Call me. Need to go over the rules of Mexican wrestling with you.")

Although perpetually agitated by his tormentors, Karl has a worldview all his own and sometimes even though he hits all the wrong notes he still reveals great truths. The book is almost funnier than the series, and on several occasions I found myself laughing out loud while reading even though I knew the general outline of what was going to happen as I had seen the series previously.

If you want a travel book that tells it like it really is or if you simply want to find out why hippos don't get eczema, buy "An Idiot Abroad"!

Getting to read what really goes on in that perfectly spherical head made this book worth every cent and then some! I've had a lot of trouble finding The Moaning of Life to watch as I'm in America and it hasn't been released on U.S. compatible mediums yet but once you watch An Idiot Abroad and read the travel diaries, I highly suggest you pick up his Moaning of Life books to continue soaking in as much Pilkington Magic as possible :)

Love the show, love the book! Karl Pilkington is, without meaning to be, a comic genius. Watching him suffer through his travels, as well as Ricky G and Stephen M reveling in said suffering = brilliantly and cruelly hilarious!

Got this for my wife. She is a big fan of Karl. Now I just hope they make more books so I can have more gifts to give.

If you're a fan of Idiot Abroad... and Ricky, Steve and Karl in general... you'll enjoy reading Karl's diary. It's just like the extra footage from a movie... but more in depth and much more fun! I laughed out loud!

Not as good as his book: The World According to Karl Pilkington.
It is a funny book though, but not as funny as expected.

Once again, Karl made reading a joy. As an extra to the series, this book adds a bit of behind-the-scenes info in a way that will make you laugh with each new sentence. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys the series or any of Pilky's ventures.

I have not finished reading all of the diaries yet, but the book is so far hilarious! I read some of it on a flight and had to keep quiet from laughing. I have watched the series and love seeing Karl struggle with "first world problems" while travelling abroad. I can't wait to incorporate this diary into my lesson plans for my freshman students.
