Description

"The Roman poet Horace once said that the exceptional writer was one who could wield ordinary words so skillfully that, in his hands, the ordinary was made new. But for the fact that Horace said it more than two thousand years ago, he might have been speaking of Joanna Trollope. Here is a writer who marshals simple prose and constructs stories around everyday people, but in her hands the humdrum is made strikingly fresh." — Washington Post Book World "The matchless Joanna Trollope works both sides of the Atlantic in her novel Girl from the South . . . [Her] pitch-perfect ear adn measured insidghts make for an elegant read. — O: The Oprah Magazine on Girl from the South "engrossing" — Southern Living Online “The complexity of familial relationships breathes realism and intensity into this novel.”— Publishers Weekly Joanna Trollope is the author of 20 previous highly acclaimed and bestselling novels, including City of Friends , Girl from the South , Marrying the Mistress , and The Other Family . She has chaired the Whitbread and Orange Awards.

Features & Highlights

  • Rose Woodrowe is getting married to Tyler Masson—a wonderful, sensitive man who is head-over-heels in love with her. The only problem? This isn’t the first time for either of them. And when you marry later in life there are a lot more people to consider. Like Rose’s daughter, Laura, who remembers her mom’s first marriage and doesn’t want her to get hurt again. Or the twins, Emmy and Nat, who are used to their mom being there for them whenever and for whatever they need. And then there’s Tyler’s children: Mallory, a young actress who craves her father’s attention; and Seth, whose San Francisco bakery is just taking off and needs all the money he can get. Rose and Tyler are determined to get it right this time, but in trying to make everyone happy, can they ever be happy themselves?

First Trollope I couldn't finish

I am such a Trollope fan; but I haven't liked her latest books as much as the earlier ones, and this was the first one I simply put down and walked away from because I was bored.

The topic -- money, in particular, money as it relates to the late proposed remarriage of two people with grown families -- should have been fascinating. But the characters felt thin, not fully developed, seen only through the lens of this particular issue, and I found their brooding and repeating didn't touch a chord.

By now, I can also see from way too early on how a Trollope novel is going to end. The last novel with a satisfying ending was, for me, Friday Nights. Both before and after that outlier, the endings are sadly predictable. I don't mind as much if the characters draw m in, but they didn't in this story. I think this is the last Trollope I'm going to buy.

Easy read

I gave 3 stars because I did enjoy the writing. Some of the characters were not well developed though and the dynamic between them was not always believable. The ending was disappointing - it just ended in almost mid-scene, and the characters especially Rose and Emmy didn't get the ending they deserved with Rose in a cramped flat and Emmy giving up the job that she was starting to enjoy.
