Description

“A lilting labor of love, a book that captures a golden moment in modern Americana. You'll not only return again to Mayberry, you'll feel as though you've never left.” -- Tom Shales ― Pulitzer Prize-winning television critic and author of Live from New York “This delightful book, written by Knotts’ brother-in-law, traces the production of the series and the friendship of its two leads, a friendship that continued long after the actors went in different career directions, right up to Knotts’ death in 2006.... A well written, respectful, and informative look at a classic TV show and the two friends who made it great. Delicious comfort food for boomers and, really, anyone with cable.” ― Booklist (starred review) “An intimate look into the lives of two thoroughly unique human beings who became not only household names but icons. What a thrill to take a peak down the alleys of Mayberry and beyond.” -- Billy Bob Thornton“De Visé, Knotts’ brother-in-law, has written a rewarding dual biography that is the definitive story of their friendship.... As a story about a TV show and a creative partnership, Andy and Don satisfies. It’s also a lively look inside the entertainment industry in the latter half of the 20th century. But more than anything, it’s the story of a beautiful friendship.” ― News & Observer “The perfect holiday gift for your aunt, uncle, grandma, or hipster niece, this well-written, often eloquent chronicle is just what fans of the show have waited for. Every fan of The Andy Griffith Show – and the great actors and writers who made it come alive – will treasure it.” ― Missoulian "A delightful, affectionate tribute to the show, and to the two stars whose unique chemistry, both on and off the screen, was the key to its enduring appeal." -- Richard Zoglin ― author of Hope “Andy Griffith and Don Knotts are one of the most famous comedy duos in America, and in this tender tribute, De Visé, Knotts’s brother-in-law, chronicles their relationship.... De Visé offers an intimate look at the lives of these two stars, and his access is invaluable to understanding their lifelong friendship. He captures the complexity of both men and the intimacy of their friendship with extreme detail and sensitivity.” ― Publishers Weekly "This is the book about The Andy Griffith Show you didn't know you needed. De Visé shows that Griffith and his equally famous sidekick were far more complicated, troubled—and interesting—than their public personae ever let on." -- Jennifer Keishin Armstrong ― author of Mary and Lou and Rhoda and Ted “An engaging, well-researched portrait of what made one of the great comedy duos of the television age tick.” ― News & Record “This book by a Knotts in-law shows how the magic was created.... The author chronicles their parting of ways, career and marital ups and downs, cast reunions of the old show, and later their reteaming in Griffith's popular series Matlock . De Visé examines the childhood, early careers, and outsize ambitions of both men, explaining why their chemistry made them click. By turns humorous, informative, and poignant.” ― Library Journal “Veteran journalist de Visé returns with a plethora of memories about actors Andy Griffith and Don Knotts, who propelled The Andy Griffith Show to enormous popularity in the 1960s.... As the author reminds us, the show about rural Mayberry remains in the popular culture: it's never been off the air, he writes, and Mount Airy, North Carolina, continues to profit from fans' visits and its annual ‘Mayberry Days.’” ― Kirkus Reviews “Well-researched and discerning, Andy and Don shows us Griffith in both darkness and light: a haunted, powerful actor as well as the gentlest of comic straight men.” -- Scott Eyman ― New York Times bestselling author of John Wayne “The true story of Andy Griffith's and Don Knotts's incredible friendship. A penetrating and moving tribute.” -- James Carville, political consultant“ Andy and Don will be a must for any Andy Griffith Show fan and anyone with a taste for showbiz gossip.” ― Star-News “A well-written and heavily sourced book with details that may be new or even surprising to some fans.” ― SitcomsOnline.com “Put this book on your holiday list for your favorite Griffith-Knotts fans.” ― Charlotte Observer’s “Reading Matters” blog “This is the story of their friendship, filled with laughter and stories about this classic TV pair. Andy and Don is a must read for any Andy Griffith Show fan.” ― Grand Forks Herald Daniel de Visé is an author and journalist who has worked at The Washington Post , The Miami Herald, and three other newspapers in a twenty-four-year career. His investigative reporting has twice led to the release of wrongly convicted men from life imprisonment; he shared a 2001 Pulitzer Prize. Avoid this book - look for another that better honors the talents of Andy, Don and the writers of this family classic!

The positive messages of the series are overshadowed by the author's attempt to create drama as he focuses on the 'dark side' of the cast's on and off screen personalities. in this recent (c2015) and generally unsympathetic write-up of the great classic 1960's TV series.

The author apparently saved time by not bothering to get quotes directly from cast (oh, there are a few, but not what one would expect in a book of this nature), crew and fans but rather injects his own opinions at every turn - probably in an attempt to add drama through speculation. One example is the author proposing that Aunt Bee was gay (and if she was - - who cares?) while providing no supporting evidence, as the author drags out with examples how and why Aunt Bee was not well liked - at least in this book's author's view !

Andy and Don's success should be the focus a we read about one of the best family drama's of all time.

Avoid this book - and look for one of the many other authors who do a much better job helping relive this classic series and the actors (writers, crew sponsors and fans) that made the series possible !

Unflinching look at two flawed human beings

Cateful what you wish for... I love TAGS and enjoy reading the behind the scenes stories. I am sorry I now know so much about the picadilloes and weaknesses of Andy Griffith and Don Knotts. We all knew they were actors playing characters but I guess I always romanticized this cast. Interesting and well written but you might get your heart broken.

Surprisingly good and not opportunistic; major firsthand sources not satisfyingly abundant

I am a younger fan who watched reruns of TAGS on various networks throughout childhood and early adulthood largely because of my dad. I cannot think of the show without thinking of my dad saying the lines ahead of time, telling us to listen to this, or his complaining how certain networks cut out the bonus scenes (almost always Ange and Barn) at the end. I am a NC native as is he and all my family. All that is to say I'm a young but seasoned fan. I enjoyed this book more than I expected. I expected a shallow retrospective of the variety Life Magazine publishes the week after a celeb dies. Not at all!
I knew little of Andy or Don's personal lives or careers outside of the show. I was impressed by the equal treatment of each man and his particulars regarding temperament, method, hopes and dreams, memories and relations, scandals and grudges: the whole gamut. My only problem is that the author, confined by the late hour in which he had to work, missed out on some potentially great interviews with the people who knew them best. This book would have been perfect 15 or 20 years ago with more firsthand accounts and anecdotes, which are the real highlights here. I understand that an honest biography of living subjects is hemmed in by politics and simple politeness, but it would have been great to peg Don or Andy with followups to certain stories. In all, this is a worthy purchase for those who are fans of the show (you know which one).

Pure Joy to Read!

I really enjoyed this book! There were a lot of photographs of their lives throughout the years, which added to the nice read. The book gave a detailed overview of both lives individually as well as how their lives intertwined. I was worried it would tarnish their image in my mind, but instead this book added depths of humanity and an appreciation for their lives, careers, and friendship. I have more admiration for them in their careers and lives, especially getting a glimpse of the struggles they both endured. I watch the Andy Griffith Show everyday, mostly because my mother lives with me and also enjoys it; but having some additional insight now to the making of the show and backstories has added more enjoyment and appreciation for the show. I would definitely recommend this book for any fan of the show or fans of Don and Andy!

I enjoyed reading the book but it does portray some dark side of both Andy & Don.
Don't read it if you do not want to become disillusioned with Mayberry.

Wow. A great insight into an iconic on screen but REAL human relationship.

Barney Fife was the greatest character in the history of television. Now of course as time moves on it will be others that are lauded similarly (and I am sure "incorrectly" IMO). I just got lucky and was turned on at the right time. Don was a genius that brought the seed of his character to The Andy Griffith Show ("TAGS"? I never knew that!). Andy, who also had comedy roots and was quite successful in that realm, stepped aside and allowed a spotlight to be put on Don, who proceeded to garner award after award as Deputy Fife.

TAGS, as originally formatted, was Andy's show - with no Don Knotts. But old friend Don asked to be a part of it. The rest is history, but until this work I knew about 10% of it.

I was so touched by the real love these brothers had for each other. Andy for Don, especially. What you saw on screen was real, and then some. The author did a good job of exposing that.Don was the lovable pup that we all wanted to take in and nurture. Andy found him and scooped him up and wouldn't let him out of his grasp. These were two very complex human beings but VERY different. That's it. Read the book. It's hard to not have a bit of watery-eye syndrome at the end.

Disappointed not what I expected..

Thought it was going to be more on their relationships on the set and outside the show. But instead it was a narrative on how they ended up getting the jobs and also went into a lot of details on the different episodes which if you watched the shows you already knew. I do not understand how the author knew so much of what was actually said by everyone in private conversations say for auditions etc? I found it boring in many places. Not enough about their actual relationships with each other or with other people. It was more on the show and how they got the parts in the show. I actually skipped through parts that were dragging out. It seemed more like they were just trying to fill up dialogue to make the book a decent length.

Truth Be Told

If you're a fan of Andy and Don you may not want to read this book. This book tells the true stories behind these two icons and humanizes them. If you want to believe that Andy Griffith lived his life as his character, you'll be disappointed. However, if you want to know the truth about Andy and Don and their real life friendship, it's a good read.

The facts about Don and Andy's later personal lives will explode the television image of these two great actors The Barney and A

The author delves into too much detail in my opinion. Some of it is interesting, but not that necessary to appreciate these two iconic stars. The facts about Don and Andy's later personal lives will explode the television image of these two great actors The Barney and Andy we all have come to love, are not at all like the real people who play them so well. So, if your bubble is busted easily, you may not want to read this book. There is another good alternative, the book The Andy Taylor Show. This is a fun read and will bring back memories of so many of the characters and episodes.

Personally, disagreeing with some other reviewers, I thought the book was poorly written.
