Description

As a college senior at The University of Texas at Austin, Tricia experienced an extraordinary near-death experience after a massive car wreck. In the afterlife, she learned that she must change her plans and work as a teacher. Tricia’s near-death experience story has been featured on A&E’s I Survived: Beyond and Back and covered by National Geographic . For over twenty years, Tricia has worked in schools and universities, often in impoverished areas. She helps others transform their lives in both the academic setting and in the spiritual community. Tricia’s poetry and essays have been published in several publications including The Binnacle , The Paterson Literary Review , and The Midwest Quarterly . Currently, Tricia Barker is an English professor in Fort Worth, Texas. This is Tricia’s first full-length book. --This text refers to the paperback edition. " Angels in the OR abounds in rarities. It is rare for a near-death experiencer to have the command of English to make the ineffable experience clear. It is rare for such an experience to contain such clear guidance about future career. It is also rare to hear an experiencer tell of trauma and healing in the aftermath of the experience. This book offers these rare gems to its readers. Those unfamiliar with near-death experiences will find an excellent introduction to the experiencer's perspective; those familiar will find wonders anew in Tricia's story." -- Janice Miner Holden, EdD, professor of counseling at the University of North Texas, licensed professional counselor-supervisor, past president of the International Association for Near-Death Studies" Angels in the OR is about a spiritual journey of a very alive and honest woman. She hides nothing from her truthful account of living, dying, and living more fully. Tricia Barker is an engaging and compassionate person who has found her purpose in life. Following her beautifully written story will confirm the readers about their own journey. Share the light with her as she brings the love into our world." -- Howard Storm, author of "My Descent into Death," minister, writer, and painter"This is one book you won't want to miss! Angels in the OR: What Dying Taught Me about Healing, Survival, and Transformation is exceptionally beautiful and enthralling. Tricia Barker's near-death experience is remarkable. With each turn of the page there are powerful insights and understandings that could change your life. This outstanding book is expertly written, remarkably easy to read, and enthusiastically recommended." -- Jeffrey Long, M.D., author of New York Times bestselling "Evidence of the Afterlife: The Science of Near-Death Experiences""Tricia Barker's Angels in the OR is far more than the story of a profound near-death experience. It is a book of profound spiritual wisdom, which comes from the author's life of healing from great physical pain, emotional trauma, and most of all from her inspiring dedication to her life as a teacher. I was deeply moved by this book. The light and infinite love of God often shines through Tricia Barker's words." -- Kenneth Ring, Ph.D. is a retired Professor Emeritus of psychology at the University of Connecticut and an internationally recognized authority on the subject of near-death experiences. He is the co-founder and past president of The International Association for Near-Death Studies --This text refers to the paperback edition.

Features & Highlights

  • A life-altering car accident, an act of unforgettable violence...One woman’s courageous story.
  • Tricia Barker was a depressed, agnostic college student at The University of Texas in Austin...until a profound near-death experience (NDE) during surgery revolutionizes her entire world. As she learns to walk again, Tricia lets go of painful wounds from childhood and integrates some of the aftereffects of her spiritual journey into her daily life. She returns to college with renewed vigor, intending to embark on a new path by becoming an English teacher. But after a year of teaching in the US, Tricia travels to South Korea, where she is the victim of a sexual assault. Now, she must use the wisdom she gained on the Other Side to heal herself; and later, guide countless junior high, high school, and college students to greater peace. Through teaching and mentoring others—many of whom are struggling with traumas of their own—Tricia decides to devote her life to bringing the “light” she experienced during her NDE to individuals who are seeking solace, inspiration, and overall well-being.

An NDE and so much more...

Tricia's memoir details the extraordinary near death experience from injuries she sustained in a auto accident while she was in college. I'm fascinated with these stories because I had an NDE too - albeit not as extensive as Tricia's.
This book is beautifully written - not a surprise since Tricia teaches writing as a professor in Texas. And yet, no matter who you are, writing one's memoir is never easy.
Tricia's NDE was exceptionally long and she was blessed with detailed recall of her transition to the other side of the veil of forgetfulness, as it is often called. In addition, Tricia observed the activities of people in the OR and her family in the hospital waiting area. Following her NDE, she was able to recount her observations accurately and thus substantiate her experience. This is something NDE researchers are keen to see.
Tricia also conveys the consequences of childhood abuse as well as the traumatic after effects of the rape she endured while living in Korea alone. These and other experiences, both good and bad, could be validating for other women. H
Her journey back to wholeness and self appreciation is well documented as Tricia continues teaching, a career she was told to pursue during her NDE, and helping the children she is able to reach - many of whom were living lives of neglect and other forms of abuse in addition to difficulties associated with immigration, migrant worker parents and other forms of social devaluation. Tricia's interventions provided many of these kids with the 1 trustworthy adult that can provide some healing in lives of uncertainty.
By utilizing her gift to reach children and provide them with lovingkindnness, Tricia began to heal and love herself. And this shines through her story as she shares with us her life today and her values and dreams for the future. Tricia had also been gifted with positive aftereffects from her NDE. She is sometimes able to sense the future for others and, when positive, her words can provide hope during difficult times. I met Tricia briefly at an IANDS convention in Philadelphia and she provides me with what proved to be accurate reassurance for my future during a difficult time. IANDS, The International Association for Near Death Studies, publishes a peer-reviewed journal documenting NDE research and provides both group and individual support for individuals around the world, plus loads of other services. Not surprisingly, it's difficult to reintegrate back to one's life following an NDE.
For those who question the truth of NDE's, suspend your disbelief, read and enjoy Tricia's memoir. There's much to be learned in this beautiful book for everyone.
