Description

“Gosling is a stylish, sophisticated writer, and we realize that we are following Andy on what amounts to a grand scavenger hunt for the truth. Rain falls relentlessly, and the ensuing floods form an ominous backdrop to a story that becomes darker as it goes along.” ―The New York Times Book Review “Before the Ruins is a lush and layered thriller that mystery lovers will savor.” ―Real Simple "In this wonderfully sophisticated and beautifully conceived novel, the exceptionally talented Gosling does what many new authors can't: She skillfully navigates several interconnecting timelines in an already multifaceted and complex story. This can be problematic for even the most successful and seasoned novelists, but Gosling handles this obstacle with a unique and clever touch that is quite refreshing. " ― New York Journal of Books "Whip-smart." ―ShelfAwareness "Gosling uses her richly ruinous setting as a jumping off point to examine class, innocence, morality, and loss." ―Lit Hub “Richly atmospheric and exquisitely written, Before the Ruins is wistful and haunting, hopeful and beautiful. Confidently contributing to the tradition of British mysteries, Gosling has delivered a tale that will satisfy fans of Tana French and Paula Hawkins.” ―BookPage "The moody, gothic atmosphere enhances this very English [story]...Gosling not only excels in writing a mystery steeped in British history, but a mystery of this woman―how did she overcome what happened to her as a child, how did she become this person she is now?" – Newcity Lit "Gosling’s atmospheric debut takes a familiar theme – the way the things we do as teenagers reverberate in later life – but treats it with care and empathy...it’s the finely drawn characters, especially the spiky narrator Andrea, that linger in the memory." – Daily Mail UK "[A] stellar debut. . . .The gorgeous, poetic prose perfectly complements the suspenseful plot. Gosling is off to a terrific start." – Publishers Weekly , starred review "The elements of mystery serve to provide narrative tension, but the real point here is Gosling’s examination of the disappointment of modern living, the emptiness of adulthood, and the notion of the fake diamond necklace so many of us spend our lives searching for... Come for the missing person mystery, stay for the existential ennui." – Kirkus "Engrossing, beguiling, and with an undertow of menace, Before the Ruins is a masterly debut from a richly talented author." –Sarah Waters, author of The Paying Guests "Lush and razor-sharp, Before the Ruins is both deliciously gothic and completely contemporary. Every single page is absorbing and surprising."– Flynn Berry, author of Under the Harrow "I don't know the last time I enjoyed a book this much. Unbelievably tense and incredibly smart, Victoria's Gosling's story about four friends playing a truly terrifying game of cat-and-mouse in a deserted manor house is the perfect menage a trois of superb plotting, haunting characters, and gorgeous, atmospheric prose. Tana French fans will devour this." – Aimee Molloy, author of The Perfect Mother "Four disaffected teenagers, a deserted manor, an unlimited supply of drugs, and a cache of potentially explosive secrets. What could go right? Before the Ruins , Victoria Gosling’s stunner of a debut novel, is rich with mystery and moral disorder. It put me in mind of Edward St. Aubyn and Donna Tart; dark, fierce, and totally addictive." – Valerie Martin, author of Property and Trespass Victoria Gosling , author of Before the Ruins , grew up in Wiltshire, England, and studied English literature at Manchester University. Rambling

I wanted to like this book, I really did. I am half way through it and just can’t finish it. It is so disjointed. I don’t know who or what she is even talking about most of the time. It is very frustrating. It is like reading some one ramble on and on.

Very disappointing

I was really dismayed how the story didn't follow the description. The last 2 chapters finally made sense.
I have already donated the book. Maybe someone else will like it.

Waste of time...

This book is so poorly written I couldn't get past the 3rd chapter.

Reluctant prose from a persistently passive voice.

It's rare that I feel the need to leave a review... and I feel especially guilty for leaving this negative review for a new author, but I must, for the reader. While the story might be good, or even great, it is not one that can be experienced, at least not without a certain level of self hatred. The entire book is written in passive voice, awkwardly talking around the ideas and events instead of just telling the story... Then, abruptly, the story shifts between past and present tense. Did anyone actually edit or review this novel? Yikes.

Boring. I’m sorry, but it is.

It took me at least 15 tries to finish this book. I literally had force myself on principal. It is not engrossing or compelling in any way. Never really takes off.

Because they don't allow six stars

Indelible characters, mesmerizing prose, important issues. So good I went right back to the beginning and read it a second time, with even more pleasure.

(Tip of the hat to SHINDIG! Magazine, from whom I stole my headline.)

Don't waste your money

I tried three times to get into this book from the beginning. Halfway through the last attempt I gave it away. Boring. Weirdly written -- don't see the artistry that they rave about at all. Not a mystery and very boring. Mislabeled by the publisher. Never again from this author.

Incomprehensible

This book is incomprehensible in plot, narrative, characters, time frame etc. Gave up 1/3 through it and I never do that. Glad it was only a library book.

What it isn't

I think this book is one of those genre mashups combining a literary novel and a thriller. We have a couple of mysteries. In one, a rather somber one, Peter's mother asks Andy, Andrea to Peter's mother, if she knew where Peter was and if not, could she find him. The other mystery covers multiple events at a place called The Manor. That's where they found David, the only person to get between Andy and Peter. It's the place where they played "the Game", which concerned a diamond necklace which may or may not still be in the Manor and a fake necklace that kind of looked like it. It's also the place where Emma died. Emma may have been murdered. It could have been an accident.
I say it's also literary. Andy looks for Peter and finds David. There is a flood and maybe art fraud and perhaps David will get back with Andy but neither one thinks that's a possibility. Then Peter tells Andy to not look for him. Andy visit Peter's mother and tells her the same thing Peter told her. He's in America only he isn't.
While Andy and Peter were in school and BFFs, Andy dated a guy called Marcus. She worked for Marcus's dad. When she a Marcus broke up after many years, she stopped working there. When she came back to town, she found his dad living at the Manor, which had been turned into a senior living center. He barely remembered her. She visits because she feels guilty about the breakup with Marcus, until Marcus tells Andy he broke up with her for a different reason.
I kind of got pulled into the story. On one level it is tedious people doing tedious things. On another, it's what would I do in the same circumstances. I will recommend it for a snowy afternoon when it's too wet to go outside.
