Description

“Black Cowboys of the Old West has a special place in my heart because these trailblazing cowboys of the Old West paved the way and helped make me the black cowboy I am today. This strongly written, proud saga is more than just a great book; it brings to life the quiet, unmapped stories of extraordinary men who have been omitted from history. Black Cowboys of the Old West is the most absorbing work of historical value that I have read in a long time. You'll want everyone you know to read it.” ―Cleo Hearn, “Mr. Black Rodeo,” founder and producer of the Cowboys of Color Rodeo Tour, and Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association member since 1959 “This book is a great reminder that African American men and women were indeed part of the American West. Thoroughly researched and engagingly written, it is a must read for those who want to know about the little known or nearly forgotten black folks who made a living and a life on the cattle frontier.” ―Quintard Taylor, Scott and Dorothy Bullitt Professor of American History, University of Washington “Tricia Martineau Wagner, author of African American Women of the Old West , brings readers a delightful new companion volume, Black Cowboys of the Old West . The ten biographies in this well-researched and lively book range from rodeo stars (Bill Pickett) to working cowhands (Bose Ikard, Jim Perry).Wagner succeeds admirably in her goal of bringing black cowboys into 'the nation's vision of a shared authentic Western heritage.'” ―Richard W. Slatta, professor of history at North Carolina State University, and author of Cowboy: The Illustrated History , The Mythical West , and The Cowboy Encyclopedia “Tricia Martineau Wagner continues to bring history to life with her book Black Cowboys of the Old West, a significant contribution to the study of African American history. Accounts of cowboys like Jesse Stahl, Robert Lemmons, and Daniel Webster Wallace provide information that not only educates, but also entertains.” ―Ed Diaz, President of the Association for African American Historical Research and Preservation Tricia Martineau Wagner has a B.A. in Elementary Education and attended the University of Toledo and Miami University, Ohio. She taught elementary school and was a reading specialist for twelve years. She is member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators and the Evangelical Press Association.

Features & Highlights

  • The word cowboy conjures up vivid images of rugged men on saddled horses—men lassoing cattle, riding bulls, or brandishing guns in a shoot-out. White men, as Hollywood remembers them. What is woefully missing from these scenes is their counterparts: the black cowboys who made up one-fourth of the wranglers and rodeo riders. This book tells their story. When the Civil War ended, black men left the Old South in large numbers to seek a living in the Old West—industrious men resolved to carve out a life for themselves on the wild, roaming plains. Some had experience working cattle from their time as slaves; others simply sought a freedom they had never known before. The lucky travelled on horseback; the rest, by foot. Over dirt roads they went from Alabama and South Carolina to present-day Texas and California up north through Kansas to Montana. The Old West was a land of opportunity for these adventurous wranglers and future rodeo champions. A long overdue testament to the courage and skill of black cowboys, Black Cowboys of the Old West finally gives these courageous men their rightful place in history.

Exciting and fun to read!

Well, here it is. I don't write many reviews because of my poor grammer. In this case, I'll attempt to convey my message as clearly as possible? The book, is excellent. I normally do not enjoy reading a group of (Short) stories because I get all caught up in the moment and ""BAM"" the story ends! Then I am forced to purchase yet, another book...go figure?
This particular book is well written and I enjoyed it, however; like with most books of Black-History, there is little to no documentation for these authors to get. It seems that America at that time made certain Black-Americans were not worthy of making history...sad, hell, there should book about the lack of records kept for black americans.
Oh yes, the book. Outstanding, I would suggest it to any one interested in the days of the past and Black Cowboys. This had to be a tough book to write and it was done well as could be!

Disappointing

Not that good. Doesn't go as in depth as it should. Where the hell is Bass Reeves? You gotta have him, he was the black version of Wyatt Earp, but better. Pass on this one.

It only tells stories of

Black men in the Wild West and not the women. I had to buy a separate book from a different author for that.

No understanding of the topic

Very disappointing to read a book written by someone that has little to no understanding of a cowboy or the environment in which they lived. I would expect that an author writing a historical rendition of these cowboys lives to do, at a minimum, some limited work to understand some basic things about horses and cattle. The individuals that she included in the book deserved better.

A must read for those interested in Black Cowboys in the Post Civil War era.

published in 2011 this is the most outstanding reference available, that I have found, on the Black Cowboys of the Old West. This is a difficult subject to research due to discrimination of the days following the Civil War but Wagner has compiled a set of biographies that demonstrate the accomplishments of a few of the best of the cowboys of the late 1800's.

For Teens

I briefly read some of the stories and scanned others. I was interested in those stories of cowboys with whom I am unfamiliar. This is book is written for teenagers. It appears to glamorize and sanitize the lives of some the historical figures who were hoodlums. It does the same for those who do deserve glorification. One of the remarkable things of the post-slavery era is the diversity of many western towns that today are no longer diverse.
