Features & Highlights

  • Our understanding of ocean life has changed dramatically in the last decade, with new species, new behaviors, and new habitats being discovered at a rapid rate.
  • Blue Planet II
  • , which accompanies an epic 7-part series, is a ground-breaking new look at the richness and variety of underwater life across our planet. With 300 breathtaking photographs and stills from the BBC Natural History Unit's spectacular footage, each chapter brings to life a different habitat of the oceanic world. Voyages of migration show how each of the oceans on our planet are connected; coral reefs and arctic ice communities are revealed as thriving underwater cities; while shorelines throw up continual challenges to those living there or passing through. A final chapter explores the science and technology of the Ocean enterprise—not only how they were able to capture these amazing stories on film, but what the future holds for marine life based on these discoveries.

Breathtaking cinematography with Intimate Shots Like never before

The 4K HDR blu-ray will become available in March. Fortunately, the 4K version is already available online for download for free but it'll set you back 142 GB in size.

Now let me get down to the series itself.

The camera works are breathtaking. I have bought all BBC Wildlife Series and this is by far the best in cinematography.

Unlike other series which took shots from a distance, this documentary took camera works to a whole new level with intimate shots that seem like they were take by one of the animals itself.

There were also other new behaviors observed in this series that have not been filmed or seen before, such as the Tusk fish using tools to pry out flesh from a shell. As David says "it'll change the way you view how smart fish can be"

One thing that I did not like in the series though was that David Attenborough seemed like he had a really hard time getting the words out of his mouth. He looked so frail. But he still managed to deliver what was asked of him.

If you ever have the chance to purchase this in 4K HDR, by all means, please purchase it.

I am just a little impatient, and because the 4K HDR was already available for download, I could not bring myself to refuse and wait 4 months.

I am still determined to buy the 4K HDR when the bluray comes out in April, but as all other things in the world, my determination may change. But I will purchase it if I get the chance just to complete my bluray collection.

Beautifully executed paean to our oceans and Earth!

Library book. No purchase. Fantastic book. The authors and photographers illustrate facets of our oceans that are magnificent and for most, seldom seen. Great prose and explanations that go with these wonderful photos. Our oceans are wonderful gifts that we many times do take for granted. The book showcases these magnificent creatures and their niche in our wonderfully complex global ecosystem. Oceans from around the globe are explored. My only regret is that people like Scott Pruitt, etc. and his ilk will never really even bother to take a look at this book and realize the importance the oceans play in the survival of mankind. Those of us who do care and want to change will love this book. The other 75% of the American population? Probably not. What a terrible shame this is, too. Wonderful book about our great home planet. Savor both.
