"Sarah MacLean's books are fierce ." — Julia Quinn, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Bridgerton series "When a new Sarah MacLean novel comes out, I drop everything to read." — Emily Henry, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Beach Read “I recommend anything by Sarah MacLean.” — Lisa Kleypas, New York Times bestselling author "Smart, sexy, action-packed, propulsive escapism at it's absolute finest. We are lucky to be living and breathing in the Sarah MacLean era." — Christina Lauren, New York Times and #1 international bestselling authors of The Unhoneymooners "Sarah MacLean came to slay, not play with Bombshell ! In this first installment of her Hell’s Belles series, she delivers a stormy, swoony love story, yes, but also a cadre of powerful women who take no sh*t and give as good as they get. Thoroughly modern in its sensibilities and perspective on what women are capable of and still perfectly historical. I'll never get used to how talented this woman truly is." — Kennedy Ryan, USA Today bestselling author “It’s not summer if you’re not getting lost in the lush, sinful world of a Sarah MacLean novel… MacLean delivers a knockout one-two punch of blazing-hot romance and a deliriously feminist girl gang.” — Entertainment Weekly “MacLean is a master at weaving passion and vulnerability equally in her characters…xa0when it comes to historical romance, she’s one of the best.” — Vulture “Attention, Bridgerton fans! Bombshell by Sarah MacLean is the first installment in a feminist romance series about British aristocrat Lady Sesily Talbot, a fiercely independent woman who’s not afraid to go after what—and who— she wants.” — Real Simple "Bestseller MacLean ( Daring and the Duke ) launches her Hell’s Belles series with a sizzling, adventurous Victorian romance...This promises good things to come." — Publishers Weekly “…A celebration of finding joy through living and loving with truth and authenticity…Another stunner from a Romancelandia favorite.” — Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "With the splendidly conceived launch to her new Hell’s Belles series, RITA award-winning MacLean aptly demonstrates that her literary magic never loses its allure by gifting readers with both an extraordinarily memorable cast of characters and a fiercely feminist storyline powered by ample measures of intense sensuality and sharp wit." — Booklist "MacLean (“Bareknuckle Bastards” series) kicks off a planned series with this feminist historical romance that’s full of witty dialogue and plenty of steamy scenes... MacLean’s dedicated fan base will be eagerly awaiting this novel, but it will also appeal to other romance readers who are unfamiliar with her body of work. Highly recommended for general purchase." — Library Journal (starred review) A life-long romance reader, Sarah MacLean wrote her first romance novel on a dare, and never looked back. She is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of romances translated into more than twenty languages, a romance columnist, and the co-host of the weekly romance novel podcast, Fated Mates. A graduate of Smith College and Harvard University, she lives in New York City.

Features & Highlights

  • New York Times
  • bestselling author Sarah MacLean returns with
  • a blazingly sexy, unapologetically feminist new series, Hell’s Belles, beginning with a bold, bombshell of a heroine, able to dispose of a scoundrel—or seduce one—in a single night.
  • After years of living as London’s brightest scandal, Lady Sesily Talbot has embraced the reputation and the freedom that comes with the title. No one looks twice when she lures a gentleman into the dark gardens beyond a Mayfair ballroom…and no one realizes those trysts are not what they seem.
  • No one, that is, but Caleb Calhoun, who has spent years trying
  • not
  • to notice his best friend’s beautiful, brash, brilliant sister. If you ask him, he’s been a saint about it, considering the way she looks at him…and the way she talks to him…and the way she’d felt in his arms during their one ill-advised kiss.
  • Except someone has to keep Sesily from tumbling into trouble during her dangerous late-night escapades, and maybe close proximity is exactly what Caleb needs to get this infuriating, outrageous woman out of his system. But now Caleb is the one in trouble, because he’s fast realizing that Sesily isn’t for forgetting…she’s forever. And forever isn’t something he can risk.

Love the idea of this book!

I have to start by saying Sarah MacLean is one of my favorite authors. I took part in the Summer of MacLean and reread all of her books and fell in love all over. That hasn't changed, but this book was not one of my favorites even though I love the idea of this book. Sesily and Caleb are both fabulous characters and the idea of a strong group of smart women who take on injustices against the weak can't be beat! There just wasn't enough of a story between Sesily and Caleb. Their arguments and their sex scenes seemed repetitive and contrived. This book did not seem to have the depth and dialog that I expect from a Sarah MacLean novel. This is the first book of hers that I haven't inhaled in one sitting. It was easy to put it down because the book seemed to jump around a lot and didn't make sense. It was really choppy and disjointed. All in all this book made me sad because it had such potential. I hope the next book brings back the master storyteller.

Too much interior monologue

Sarah MacLean is a strong writer. I take issue with only a few things in this novel. One, the author's diversions into modern language and slangy expressions in a supposed late 19th Century setting, is irritating and, bearing in mind MacLean's academic credentials, beneath her. However, my chief complaint is the book's over-use of interior monologue. Reliance on emotion and subjective POV: it's a hallmark of romance fiction. But it should never be an excuse to beat the reader over the head with it. When I skip pages trying to find where the endless lying-on-the-shrink's-couch leaves off and the narrative picks up again, or when I am impelled to do what I'm doing now - write an unfavorable review - it's because I resent the author thinking I am so stupid that I need to have a character's inner emotional landscape explored step by miniscule step in order to relate to love or rage or frustration or fear. Less is more, Sarah MacLean, less is more. And if your agent or publisher is making you write this way, shame, shame on them. You are better than that.

Disappointing

I pre-ordered this and received it Aug 2021. In all this time, Ive only managed to read 99 pages and don’t care to finish it. I am admitting defeat and selling it to a used bookstore this weekend.

Nothing about this story has entertained me enough to read any further, though I enjoyed the characters in MacLean’s previous books.

For me, this book is a big dropoff in what I expect from a Sarah MacLean book. I won’t bother at all with book 2, but I am still glad this one pleased a portion of her fans.

As a side note to the publisher, this book is a weird square size and really uncomfortable to hold. I believe that may be contributing to my reluctance to continue this mediocre story. Please rethink this format.

Not good

I skipped ahead to the 50% mark and the the dialog between these two is exactly the same as the in the first 10%. It also does authors no favors to give no background info, kinda like the author is so clever, but actually has no fleshed out person and is just going to wing it.

A novel looking for a story

I've always liked Sarah Maclean books but this one was page after page of the same words/dialogue - tedious. The actual story needed to be fleshed out. I wondered where her editor was with this one.

Loved This Book, Excited for the Series!

Although the setting is Victorian England, the female power vibe that exudes from the novel made me so happy. Sisily AKA Sexily is one of five daughters of an Earl. A man who rose to his station after winning a card game. No spoilers butttt Sisily’s sisters and her group of friends AKA the Helle’s Belles embody big feminine energy. With supporting characters like a Black Irish female pub owner and a divinely devilish Duchess ‘guiding’ the Belles, I kept laughing and cheering. And there’s this male character who’s in the book too . . .😂😂😂
