Features & Highlights

  • A psychologist offers a roadmap for those looking to break free of toxic family relationships and thrive in the aftermath.
  • Toxic family abuse is always two-fold. The first layer of abuse is the original poor treatment by toxic family members, and the second is someone’s denial of the ways in which abusers treat and harm them. Loving someone doesn’t always mean having a relationship with them, just like forgiveness doesn’t always mean reconciliation. A significant part of healing comes with accepting that there are some relationships that are so poisonous that they destroy one’s ability to be healthy and function best.
  • But It’s Your Family
  • is a remarkable account of what it means to cut ties to toxic family abuse and thrive in the aftermath.
  • Inside, Dr. Sherrie Campbell clarifies:
  • ·      How parents, adult children, siblings, grandparents, and in-laws can be toxic
  • ·      The difference between flawed and toxic family members
  • ·      Explaining the cutting of ties to children and others who may not understand
  • ·      Spiritual and religious views on forgiveness
  • ·      The definition of cutting ties and what No Contact actually means
  • When readers are able to bring closure to those toxic relationships, they give themselves the space to love those family members from a distance, as fellow human beings, with the knowledge that it is unwise to remain connected. Readers learn how to love themselves in the process and fundamentally change their lives for the better!

Terrible Book!

Cancel culture has no place in family relationships. No one should simply walk away from family members. Growth comes from setting boundaries, seeing and trying to understand both sides of every issue and open, honest communication. Family is forever and you find a way to make it work. The advice in this book doesn't lead to self love but to regret.

A must-read for anyone trying to break free

I've read and re-read this book and will probably even read it again. I'm almost 63 years old and even though I've had extensive therapy to overcome a very disfunctional family, this book helped me realize just how much I've been manipulated, emotionally abused and held hostage by my own sense of obligation to "family". It has helped me on an entirely new level. I always, always was the one to apologize and keep toxic family relationships going at a huge cost to myself. No more. Thank you Dr. Campbell!

Dr. Campbell UNDERSTANDS

This book explains why it’s okay, even good, to cut ties with toxic family members.

The author, Dr. Campbell, understands what it’s like to grow up in a family that wasn’t nurturing. She UNDERSTANDS.

Dr. Campbell addresses a big issue for many people of faith and the reason why I chose this book over others: What about forgiveness or honoring your father and mother? Dr. Campbell explains in detail and with a lot of hand-holding that by letting go we are honoring a family member’s choice to be who they are without using forgiveness and kindness to try to change them into what we need. (She said it more elegantly.)

Another big issue, for me anyway, was how do you explain to outsiders what’s going on? Dr. Campbell says outsiders cannot understand. (Unless they are trained professionals.) I love that Dr. Campbell explains WHY outsiders can’t understand.

Dr. Campbell rants a lot about her mom, so I almost took off a star, but then all her ranting just proves that she really does understand.

Sometimes the writing is dense. Long paragraphs of deep thoughts. Take your time, take notes. Absorb what Dr. Campbell is saying. It’s worth it.

Five stars.

Life changing must read!!

This book is phenomenal!
It is both validating and life changing. A very easy read, with each chapter building exquisitely to the next. I didn't want it to end. This author brings hope to people who have suffered silently for years, giving this all to common abuse a name and a face. BRAVO!!!!
