Features & Highlights

  • Caravaggio, or more accurately Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610), was always a name to be reckoned with. Notorious bad boy of Italian painting, the artist was at once celebrated and controversial: violent in temper, precise in technique, a creative master, and a man on the run. Today, he is considered one of the greatest influences in all art history.
  • This edition offers a neat and comprehensive Caravaggio catalogue raisonné. Each of his paintings is reproduced from recent top-quality photography, allowing for a vivid encounter with the artist’s ingenious repertoire of looks and gestures, as well as numerous detail shots of his boundary-breaking naturalism. Five accompanying chapters trace the complete arc of Caravaggio’s career from his first public commissions in Rome through to his growing celebrity status and trace his tempestuous personal life, in which drama loomed as prominently as in his canvases.

A visually well done book

This book is visually very pretty and well assembled... And the biographical information that I've thumbed through so far seems interesting and has made me want to read it which I don't always feel that way about some artist coffee table books
They have nice blowups of scenes from Caravaggio's work...
But I'm a little torn on the book's overall size.. it was a little smaller than I expected it to be. I feel like if you want a biography on Caravaggio alongside his work that is easier to hold and read, this book is prob a good choice for you versus a true coffee table sized book.
If you're looking for a larger sized coffee table volume that really shows off his works as a whole, this might not be it.

An art lovers’ dream. It is good to see that beautifully made and composed books is not a lost art.

This book is a treasure for anyone who is a bibliophile, or interested in the life and work of Caravaggio as a student, a lover of art history, or all four. The illustrations in this volume are all new, which makes it instantly worth having as you will not see this quality and persecutive of photography in any other publication on the work of this artist. The history of the artist and his work is brilliantly presented and researched: this is a treasure trove of information. The volume is beautifully made and organised so that it functions as a wonderful biography and as a catalogue of a complete retrospective of the art of Caravaggio. As a book, it is a tribute to the 40th anniversary of Taschen.
