A GREAT PORTABLE RESOURCE!!

Are you planning on taking the CCNA Routing and Switching exam? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Scott Empson, has done an outstanding job of writing a 3rd edition of a book which closely aligns with industry's need for networking talent, as you enter into the era of the Internet of Everything.

Author Empson, begins with an overview of how to subnet. Then, the author provides an overview of VLSM by showing examples of how to use VLSM to make your IP plan more efficient. He continues by showing you how to use route summarization to make your routing updates more efficient. Then, the author shows you how to connect to Cisco devices. He then shows you how to navigate through Cisco IOS Software. Next, the author shows you how to configure commands to a single router. The author continues by showing you how to configure static routes in your internetwork. Then, he shows you how to configure and verify EIGRP. Next, the author shows you how to configure and verify single-area and multi-area OSPF. He also shows you how to configure commands for Catalyst 2960 switches. The author continues by showing you how to configure VLANs. Then, he shows you how to configure a VLAN trunk link The author then, shows you how to verify STP. Next, he shows you how to configure HSRP. The author continues by showing you how to transition to IPv6. Then, he shows you how to configure OSPF and EIGRP to work with IPv6. Next, the author shows you how to use boot commands for Cisco IOS Software. The author continues by showing you how to configure the register. Then, he shows you how to customize and verify CDP. Next, the author shows you how to use the commands for Telnet and SSH to remotely connect other devices. The author continues by showing you how to use the commands for both ping and extended ping. Then, he shows you how to configure SNMP. Next, the author shows you how to use the various show commands to view the routing table. The author then, discusses the differences between licensing pre- and post-Cisco IOS Version 15. He also shows you how to configure and verify NAT and PAT. The author continues by showing you how to configure and verify DHCP on a Cisco IOS router. Then, he shows you how to configure PPP. Next, the author shows you how to configure basic Frame Relay, Frame Relay and subinterfaces. He also shows you how to configure and verify GRE tunnels. The author continues by showing you how to configure a DSL connection using PPPoE. Finally, he shows you how to configure standard ACLs.

This most excellent book makes use of RFC 1918 addressing throughout. In fact, this great book follows what the author thinks is a logical approach to configuring a small to mid-size network

Very helpful guide sort of...

Good
lots of cisco commands along with examples on how to use them.

Bad
No index for individual commands, Only chapters like OSPF and EIGRP.
If you have a general idea about what you want to do the guide is great you can find your command in one of the chapters.
If you are starting out, finding a command is hard sometimes and takes up your time. "ip-domain name test.com" is the command correct and if not what chapter would I look for an example?

Cisco Routing and Switching command, this works

This book has helped me learned the various commands to configure cisco routers and switches. This is my first quarter in network technology which leads me to believe this book is design for that second quarter or more advanced professional. With the help of an instructor I understand how to use this book. With that being said, this is a straight forward book that helped me with subnetting, VLSM, router and switch commands. It has helped me on an interface with enabling EIGRP for IPV6. IPV4 is running out of numbers, therefore, IPV6 is a must. The sooner I understand IPV6 the better I can implement it. Thanks to the password-recovery procedures and configuration register section, I have a way of accessing my routers and switches from a big oops! I'm not sure of what the weaknesses are in this book but the strengths are I have learned necessary commands pretty quick. There's always room for improvement so the best I can do is a four star.

Another home run!!!

Scott Empson hits it out of the park again with this update/rewrite of the Portable Command Guide. He covers enough theory to understand the various technologies without overwhelming detail. His configuration examples get the technologies working while showing common pitfalls to avoid by using verification commands. Having room in the book to add notes and comments to personalize the book makes it quickly become the "go to" source for CCNA level technologies. This is a "must have" for any administrator in the field or for those preparing for ICND1, ICND2, or CCNA exams.

Great Reference!

This book does not go over the inner workings of everything. It gives defined lists of commands used to do specific jobs and the main ideas of operation, troubleshooting, & configuration. It also have plenty of examples, with configurations & network diagrams, so you can configure and test out the configs. It is a great reference book, especially if you are looking at certification & can't recall specific commands but also if you just need a memory boost. It covers IPv4 subnetting, CLI, IPv6 commands, Admin & Troubleshooting, IP Services, WANs, and all the basic commands for routing & switching.
There is also a great trick in the "How to Subnet" section called "The Enhanced Bob Maneuver". It can easily be used to determine number of subnets & hosts and can be extended to be useful for VLSM. It's small & easy to remember too, which is great!
I'm glad I bought this book & highly recommend it as a great reference for the basics of Cisco networking & for assisting when you are working on the CCNA.

Worth its weight in gold

The CCNA Routing and Switching Portable Command Guide is worth its weight in gold. The book won't teach you how to configure Cisco routers and switches. However, it will rescue you when you can't quite remember the details of Cisco's convoluted configuration commands. It is intended for use by people at the CCNA level, and does not cover more advanced material, and not even the more obscure configurations within the CCNA level. You need to buy this book if you deal with Cisco equipment at all.

CCNA Routing

I use it each day in the Cisco 201 class at Trident Tech when I'm lost for the commands to use on a switch or router... well the price to have it when you are lost.. The labs are no problem with this book.

Commands for Cisco routers and switches

Good book for commands as I am learning how to configure routers and switches. Possibly, this a better book for someone that has a better overall understanding of procedures for cisco set up. For a newbie, it would help if there were a bigger index of the commands, or possibly a way to search what it is that you are trying to implement to get to the proper commands. Overall, this book has helped me and is worth the cost.
