INTRODUCTIONxa0 I enjoyed my fair share of champagne as a young wine professional, but the first magical champagne, the one that really pushed the boundaries of what I thought champagne could be, was the 1979 Salon. I tasted it in 1996 at the wine store in San Francisco where I worked: we were selling the 1979 for $99, which was expensive for the time, but not nearly as prohibitively priced as the same bottle would be today.Most champagnes are blended wines, which offer a multifaceted harmony, with diverse components coming together to create a complex whole. In contrast, the Salon, which comes exclusively from one village—Le Mesnil-sur-Oger—felt distinctly narrower in scope yet no less complete. Tasting it, I immediately knew it was different than any champagne I’d had before, and I was filled with questions: Where was Le Mesnil? Why did its wine taste this way? Did all Le Mesnil champagnes taste like this? And perhaps even more importantly, if the Salon was indicative of Le Mesnil, what did champagnes from other villages taste like?*** The contemporary movement in Champagne is more than the rise of grower estates, or the reduction of dosage, or the creation of single-vineyard wines, or the practice of organic and biodynamic viticulture. All these things are emblematic of Champagne today, yet they are reflective of a larger transformation, which is, rather simply, the acknowledgment of champagne as a wine like any other. While both consumers and producers were content in the recent past to treat champagne as a brand, or as an object of lifestyle, or as an entity in the wine world that was somehow less serious than Burgundy or Barolo, the prevailing attitudes have shifted, at least in the arenas that matter. Champagne is now subject to the same questions asked of any other wine and held to the same standards—and now that it’s being held accountable, it must provide satisfactory answers.One of the primary functions of a truly fine wine, no matter where it comes from, is to say something about the place where it was grown. Terroir is a subject that hasn’t been adequately explored in Champagne, and yet, it plays a fundamental role in the creation of the wine’s character, just as it does in any other wine region. It’s for this reason that I’ve focused on terroir as the theme of this book.It is still not yet possible to write a comprehensive analysis of Champagne’s terroir, given the lack of tools and information available compared with other historic regions. However, it’s my hope that this book can in some small way help to push the dialogue further toward acknowledging champagne as a terroir-expressive wine, and to provide a foundation for envisioning that. Another home run from Peter Liem

If you're familiar with Peter Liem's recent book "Sherry, Manzanilla & Montilla," you will come to this new tome, "Champagne," with high expectations. Let's just say "expectations met, and then some." In his typically no-nonsense style, Liem presents a history of winemaking in the region and a detailed review of the terroir in each of the subregions of Champagne. There is a thoughtful discussion of the merits of blended and single site champagne; the ongoing trend to "grower Champagne" production; climate change and increasingly warm Champagne vintages; the prudent use of dosage, still Coteaux Champenois... the book touches all the bases. The second half of the text consists of brief profiles of scores of the key Champagne houses and growers.and their wines.

In a separate section of the slipcase holding the book itself, there is a treasure worth the price of the entire package and then some - a set of nice reproductions of the Larmat maps of Champagne and its subregions. These are rare as hen's teeth, beautiful to behold and extremely informative. Try to find a set of originals from a rare book seller specializing in books and maps on wine: if you can find these maps at all, they will cost a king's ransom. Unless reproductions just won't do and you simply must have the originals, you can stop your search right here.

This is an up-to-date major book on champagne. Published this year (2017), it covers terroir and the producers, aspects of which can be found in other books on this wine (and there have been many such books). Peter Liem's stands out for the following reasons: First, it is very lucid and enjoyable to read; the beginner will find Part One (Understanding Champagne) a great help whereas the experienced champagne lover will still find some useful information that he might not have known before.

Secondly, Parts two and three which deal with the places and the producers are extremely concise and informative. Liem explains what changes have occurred in the champagne region in the 20th century, and how the new generation of growers and winemakers have transformed champagne's identity as a wine.

Thirdly, the publisher's layout and the photographs selected give this book an atmosphere that differs from the others. It is a strange atmosphere in which one feels that he is in the old country in a by-gone age; yet the information, the people, and the champagne as fresh as the most recent vintage.

Fourthly, the book comes in a box in which there is a bottom drawer containing the seven maps of Louis Larmat. These are reprints of Larmat's original 1940 drawings. It is amazing that we are treated to a reprint of these famous maps; more importantly, Liem tells us that these maps have helped him find his way around the champagne region
