Description

"A must read for all executives, managers and change practitioners. Change Management: The People Side of Change provides a practical and yet comprehensive explanation of change management and how to apply the given tenets to achieve the desired business objectives of change. Based on years of research, the guidance in this book illustrates why effective change management is more than a project team role: it is also the responsibility of every executive, manager and supervisor in the organization. I will distribute this book broadly throughout my organization." --Michael Nestor, VP and Head, Change Management, Bayer"Tim and Jeff continue to craft thoughtful, practical, and tested advice for leaders who live in a world of continuous change--in other words, for all of us. This second edition adds an important thread to the conversation about the people side of change management: we change for a purpose. Clarity of intent that creates a vision of the future state not only inspires and anchors the change effort, but makes the measures of success obvious. 'What would we have to observe as evidence that the change effort was successful?'" --Stephen Wehrenberg, Ph.D., Director of Human Resources Strategy and Executive Development, United States Coast Guard Founding Director and Past President, Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP)"This book represents comprehensive coverage of change management concepts--Individual Change Management, Organizational Change Management and Change Competency. It is packed with insights and practical advice that will immediately help all organizations--government or business--at any level. Instituting these concepts and organizational ideas--and in turn teaching them to others--we have seen an increase in individual morale and organizational productivity." --Darlene Meister, Director, Diversity & Organizational Change Management, United States House of Representatives Jeff Hiatt is the founder and lead editor of the Change Management Learning Center, author of the books The Perfect Change and the Employee's Survival Guide to Change, and co-author of Winning with Quality. Jeff has led research projects with more than 2600 companies on change management and business process design. He trains on change management and coaches business leaders world-wide. Tim Creasey is a senior editor, contributor, and lead research analyst for the Change Management Learning Center. Comically Rudimentary

If you have never before heard the term "change management" and need a dictionary-like introduction, this might well be the book for you. If, on the other hand, you've spent any material part of your career in modern business operations, especially in the technology industry, you'll likely be disappointed. The content is so incredibly basic, it's nearly comical, and could easily be summarized effectively in 2 or 3 pages. Unfortunately, books 2 or 3 pages in length don't have a very strong business case, so the authors chose to pad this with enough fluff to get it to the 150 page mark.

Part of the fluff is the use of archaic, overly formal English that gives the appearance of the content being far more authoritative and cerebral than it is. It reads like a business book from the 1950s, not one geared for today's fast-changing business environments.

Another example of the fluff: Was it really necessary to spend roughly 6 pages — with diagrams, even — to convey the importance of change management being involved in business improvement projects from the beginning rather than midstream or at the end? That seems intuitively obvious.

This book is akin to one on fine art painting, that spends 150 pages waxing poetic about brushes, canvases, and paints — what they are, and why they're a part of the process — and then not telling you a single thing about how to use them beyond sweeping conceptual generalizations.

Disappointing.

I took a three day class and most of it did not stick due to be swamped with work, life.... this book was a great refresher. Worth the read and more companies should train all their staff on change mangement.

It's fine, Prosci commercial

Prosci is it, these days at least. And mostly that seems fine, but this book doesn't seem to offer anything new.
