Beyond Positive Self-Talk and Affirmations - How to Shift the Chatter

Many of us have long known the power of positive thinking, self-talk, and affirmations. It's easy to say...but how do you do that? It's not like a light switch that you can just shift the chatter in your brain.
Kindra Hall provides the path in her latest book, Choose Your Story, Change Your Life: Silence Your Inner Critic and Rewrite Your Life from the Inside Out.

To be honest, I didn't read this book because I feel like I have a huge "gap" in my life or that my self-talk needed to shift. I just love Kindra. She is a masterful storyteller and I could listen to her read the yellow pages - because I know she would create some amazing stories to tell! (She's also the author of Stories That Stick and has a weekly video email that I never miss!).

But let's get back to the book....this book is written in such joyful detail that I could actually picture the people and situations she shares to make each point come alive and believable. Why is this important? Because you can finish each part of the book with tangible takeaways to immediately apply to your life, work, and relationships.

So here's the structure of the book:
Part 1: Why Stories are so Powerful. This sets the foundation as to where your self-stories come from, how they create your reality and how rewriting your stories can transform your future.
Part 2: The Self-Storytelling Process and how to Reconstruct Your Inner Voice:
1. Identify your invisible stories with specific trigger words or physical and/or emotional moments
2. Analyze those moments so you can begin to choose a different story
3. Reauthor a New Story That Services You. You can choose to write one that replaces your current story, reinterprets it, reroutes it, adopts it from other people in your life, or just flat-out rewrite your new story from scratch.
4. Put Your New Self-Story to Work. These new stories are fragile and it takes practice to systematically, intentionally install these new, chosen, better stories as your inner-narrative default.

Finally, Hall shares specific stories of transformation in these categories: business and career, health and well-being, money and finances, relationships and love, and family and parenting - all told in Kindra-style storytelling.

A great read, and evidently quite timely, since I realized, through reading this book, that I have just entered a new chapter in my life where I get to rewrite my story!

This Book Will Change Your Life

Have you ever felt stuck and not know why? Have you ever had a fear of getting out of your comfort zone but didn't know where that fear came from? Or, what about wondering why you keep sabotaging your relationships or have a fear of failure, of anything, really?

In CHOOSE YOUR STORY, CHANGE YOUR LIFE, Kindra Hall, like in her first book, STORIES THAT STICK, uses her unique writing ability to share facts, insight, examples from her own life mixed with bits of humor to teach you how to tap into the power of your inner voice and find the stories behind your behaviors and rewrite the stories to help you move forward in any part of your life. For me, it opened my eyes and my mind to the reasons behind limiting beliefs that I've had and never realized that they came from either something that happened in my past or something that someone had said. The good news is that Kindra guides you as to how to identify these stories and write a new one so that you can overcome the behaviors...the fear...that inhibits your life and move forward.

This is not a book you want to read once and put away. CHANGE YOUR STORY, CHANGE YOUR LIFE is the book that you will pick up again and again to work on issues, debilitating thoughts and behaviors that will undoubtedly pop up from time to time.

In summary, it's an AMAZING book that takes you on an incredible personal journey from beginning to end. It's a fantastic book for personal and professional growth. I highly recommend it!!!!

Most impactful book I’ve read in years!

I’ll typically read up to 30 books a year but this one is on my short list to read several times again. And this is the first review I’ve ever written. Being a dad, husband, businessman, brother, and son this book has opened my eyes to the countless impactful stories I’ve kept silent for too long and the author details how to best communicate them. I’ve already implemented Hall’s step by step process of storytelling to both large groups and on an individual basis. Highly recommend and hope you enjoy as much as I did!

May be useful if new to concept

The premise is that the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves shape what our lives look like and if we create new, more accurate and positive stories our lives will be better. This idea is not new, but the author uses personal and other examples to illustrate just what changing our stories and our lives might look like. While the premise is strong, I found the presentation less compelling and at times wished the author would get to the point sooner. Others may find the examples inspirational and helpful, especially if they haven't really thought about what narratives are at play in their lives.

Change your life by deciding to change the narrative you tell yourself so that it serves you better

Prior to reading this book, I was somewhat unsure what this "self-help" text was about. After reading it, the message is clear. The idea is to change your life by using  the narratives (stories) you tell yourself in a way that is positive for you.

The stories we tell ourselves are subconscious and we must coax them to the surface. The problem is that some of the stories we tell ourselves define a reality that impacts us negatively and is not a story we really want.

For example, if you are telling yourself a story that you are not worthy of love, you will see and put yourself in situations that ensures that becomes a reality. Instead find a time that proves you were wrong and tell yourself that story and that will help make your future story a totally different reality.

As I was reading this book, I remembered a lot of my own stories that I changed to serve me in a positive way over my lifetime. One that is a particularly good but simple example of choosing my story and changing my life is the time I got dressed up to attend a single's dance. I was a member of this divorce group and we were told there was a dance happening in a certain place at a certain time. I was the only one who decided to go and I got all decked out and went alone. When I got to the place, it was totally closed and dark and there was no dance. I was very disappointed and could have gone home and sulked. However, I did not like that I spent so much time getting ready and that my full face of make-up had to be washed off less than one hour after application. Instead, I thought of a plan B. Since I was a ballroom dancer and it was a Saturday night, I knew of a place that had a ballroom dance every Saturday. Therefore, I changed my plans to go to a dance studio instead and had a fabulous night. This is just a small example of changing one's story from what could have been a negative into a positive.

In summary, this book is an enjoyable read even if it is a tad long-winded and repetitive. Most of what was said could have been condensed down into a smaller book. However, there are good suggestions in the text. I just wish these suggestions were summarized into an appendix  that listed the techniques mentioned throughout the book with one or two examples of how to change one's story from one that does a disservice to one that serves to enhance life.

A lot of information

"Choose Your Story, Change Your Life: Silence Your Inner Critic and Rewrite Your Life from the Inside Out" by Kindra Hall was surprisingly dense with information. The stories are engaging. I did feel like it wandered at points and it took me awhile to finish. That said, it was an interesting read and there was some useful advice.

Create the life you always wanted.

The author is a student of neuroscience conditioning where anyone can learn how to change their story from powerless to total control. This book walks you through the steps to choose your story. I like the book and the content, but the material is not arranged in reference format and dialogue boxes for quick review and re-learning previously learned steps. Nevertheless, a good book to have in your library.
