Description

An Amazon Best Book of April 2023: City of Dreams picks up exactly where City on Fire left off, and the result is even sharper, funnier, and more brilliant than its predecessor. Defeated, without stopping even to bury his dead, Danny Ryan, along with his ailing father, his toddler son, and the rag-tag remains of the Irish crew, flees west, leaving behind a vengeful fed and some angry Italians. During a stop in Las Vegas, help arrives—like it often does for Danny—from an unexpected source. But sudden wealth necessitates one more move, and trying to get the crew to lay low in Hollywood proves dangerously and hilariously difficult, as the Altar Boys act up, and Danny meets his Dido in the desert. Being a passenger in Danny’s head can be unnerving, because he never met a wrong choice he didn’t want to make, but Winslow makes this Aeneid-inspired tale soar—sometimes from epic to venal, or from poignant to comical—and it makes the wait for the third book unbearable. —Vannessa Cronin, Amazon Editor --This text refers to the hardcover edition. Don Winslow is the author of twenty-four acclaimed, award-winning international bestsellers, including six New York Times bestsellers ( Savages , The Kings of Cool , The Cartel , The Force , The Border and City on Fire ). Savages was made into a feature film by three-time Oscar-winning writer-director Oliver Stone and a screenplay by Shane Salerno, Winslow and Stone. Winslow's epic Cartel trilogy has been adapted for TV and will appear as a weekly series on FX in 2023. The Force is soon to be a major motion picture from 20th Century Studios starring Matt Damon with James Mangold directing from a Scott Frank screenplay. Additional Winslow books are currently in development at Netflix, Warner Brothers, Sony and Working Title and he has recently written a series of acclaimed short stories for Audible narrated by four-time Oscar nominee Ed Harris. --This text refers to the audioCD edition. “A masterwork of mob fiction. . . City on Fire does for Rhode Island what David Chase’s The Sopranos did for New Jersey. . . It’s Winslow’s ways with character, as well as his fluid narrative and highly visual scene-setting, that suggest this novel, the first in a planned trilogy, could well end up in the American-mob canon along with the works of Puzo, Scorsese and Chase.” — Washington Post “Epic, ambitious, majestic, City on Fire is The Godfather for our generation.” — Adrian McKinty, #1 international bestseller and New York Times bestselling author of The Chain “[Winslow’s] books. . . . are adrenalized plot machines whose pages seem to turn themselves. . . . You don’t read City on Fire so much as you let it take you for a ride.” — USA Today “Pure genius! Nobody can bring such grit and such heart to crime fiction as Don Winslow—and with such a unique and compelling stylistic voice. This sprawling novel, populated with breathtakingly real characters, will grip you from the first page and never loosen its hold, and that remains true long after you’ve turned the last page. And what a delight that this is the first of a trilogy. Can hardly wait for the others!” — Jeffery Deaver on City on Fire “As he did in the Cartel trilogy, Winslow adeptly manages the comings and goings of a large cast of characters. . . . By the end of this well crafted, troubling epic, enough people are left standing to offer hope of a future for these deeply flawed families. That, plus a hint that Danny Ryan is heading to a ‘warmer shore,’ should lure readers to the next installment of what’s shaping up as Winslow’s next juggernaut of a modern-day epic.” — Los Angeles Times on City on Fire --This text refers to the audioCD edition. Stumbles at the finish line

Action-packed and very entertaining until the ending stumbles. Long dream or hallucinatory sequences are always self-indulgent and boring, begging for an editor to advise, “Murder your darlings.”

Then (trying to avoid a spoiler here) we have someone behave completely out of character, ignoring his stated intentions, his obvious motivation for monetary compensation, and his reputation with his underlings.

This turn was so preposterous that my first reaction was to wonder if it was actually a final hallucination.

A big miss for Winslow

I’m a Don Winslow fan. I’ve read him for well over a decade and own at least 10 of his books. I enjoyed City on Fire, even if it was a bit lighter than his usual deep dives.

That said, this book is ridiculous. That’s the only word I can think of for it.

I’ll refrain from spoilers, but there’s essentially an extended middle section of the book where the main character enters a completely different world, completely changes his life, and essentially becomes a different person in a way that’s utterly unbelievable.

And then the ridiculous interlude ends suddenly and we get back to the expected sequence of events, without that interlude serving any meaningful purpose. The book ends with things being not that different from the end of City of Dreams.

This felt like a pointless, and sometimes laughably ridiculous, sequel. Again, this is coming from someone who enjoyed the first book and has LOVED many of Winslow’s previous efforts (Frankie Machine, TPotD, The Cartel, The Force, etc.).

What's better than appreciating a new genre?

I read Winslow's last book because of his Twitter feed, and I was a little sick when I realized it was a mob story, a genre that seemed dry after being so thoroughly wrung out. I was wrong. It's an incredible talent who can take a well-trodden category and make it fresh, riveting, and even beautiful. Huge props to Winslow for City of Dreams. I can't remember being so psyched for a sequel and it didn't disappoint.

Winslow never fails, a wonderfull writer!

As allways very very well written. Quick paced and full fledged 3 dimensional characters.
This second book of Winslow's new trilogy is a must read for fans, albeit not being on a par with the Border trilogy ( but then again, the Border is and will allways be a ten star pack of books).

Eagerly waiting for the last installment!

Decent book. Kept me slightly interested

I was hoping for a lot more. It wasn't horrible. Just very predictable and the parts that weren't predictable made no sense. The ending is horrendous.

Loved City on Fire (bk 1). Did not like this one (bk 2)

While I loved the predecessor, City on Fire, I did not like this book. The plot and the characters sometimes lacked credibility (e.g. a mob boss on the run dating the equivalent of Marilyn Monroe. Really?) The author's style changed back and forth, which broke my immersion, much like the lack of credibility broke my immersion. Finally, I hated the ending.

Winslow is a popular and accomplished author, but if you are unsure about this title, try one of his other titles instead.

Winslow's Aeneid

Danny is of course Aeneas, abandoned son of the goddess of love.
