Description

“A stunning and timely conclusion to Don Winslow’s drug-war trilogy. . . This is a book for dark, rudderless times, an immersion into fear and chaos. . . You don’t read these books; you live in them.” — New York Times “Mr. Winslow writes gripping action sequences and wields statistics like a crusading journalist. Grand in scope, audacious in its political portraits, convincing in its socio-economic arguments and humane to the core, The Border is not only a formidable thriller but an important and provocative work.” — Wall Street Journal “I’m totally swept up. You can’t ask for more emotionally moving entertainment. . . Everyone in America—left, right, and center—should read this book. It’s social fiction to rival Tom Wolfe and John Steinbeck. Focused, angry, suspenseful, occasionally hilarious, always hugely entertaining. . . A harsh, important book.” — Stephen King “These angry, often heartbreaking books stand as the definitive fictional rendering of an ongoing modern tragedy. . . . The Border guides us through a savage, wholly believable world. The result is a powerful—and painful—journey through a contemporary version of hell. Rarely has hell been so compelling.” — Washington Post “If Dostoevsky slung dope, he might have written the fierce morality tale that Winslow began with The Power of the Dog . . . Truth compacted into narrative by way of meticulous research. . .xa0Eerily prescient and scathing. . . quite simply the most important crime saga in modern literature.” — Arizona Republic “ The Border is intricate, mean and swift, a sprawling canvass of characters. . . Granular detail and sharp dialogue have made his drug war trilogy propulsive and compelling. . . The stories unravel broken lives caught in a mesmerizing mosaic fueled by addiction and haunted by bloodshed.” — Los Angeles Times “A landmark moment in crime fiction. . . . It is Winslow’s remarkable ability to translate the utter fiasco of our 50-year War on Drugs into the most wrenching of human stories, tragedy seemingly without end, that gives this novel its unparalleled power.” — Booklist [starred review] “Peak page-turner. . . Will rattle your soul in those early-morning hours as you come face to face with all the corruption and depravity in the world. . . The crime-fiction equivalent of The Stand —the kind of compulsive Stephen King-esque epic that captivates and horrifies.” — Globe & Mail “ The Cartel and The Force were high water marks in the genre in terms of ambition and reach, and Winslow has excelled again. . . This is Winslow at his sensational best.” — Financial Times “Don Winslow’s epic trilogy about America’s longest war comes to a powerful and troubling conclusion.” — Associated Press “With clear-eyed determination and an almost Shakespearean grasp of human nature, Winslow takes readers on an unforgettable journey.” — Publishers Weekly [starred review] Don Winslow is the author of twenty-four acclaimed, award-winning international bestsellers, including six New York Times bestsellers ( Savages , The Kings of Cool , The Cartel , The Force , The Border and City on Fire ). Savages was made into a feature film by three-time Oscar-winning writer-director Oliver Stone and a screenplay by Shane Salerno, Winslow and Stone. Winslow's epic Cartel trilogy has been adapted for TV and will appear as a weekly series on FX in 2023. The Force is soon to be a major motion picture from 20th Century Studios starring Matt Damon with James Mangold directing from a Scott Frank screenplay. Additional Winslow books are currently in development at Netflix, Warner Brothers, Sony and Working Title and he has recently written a series of acclaimed short stories for Audible narrated by four-time Oscar nominee Ed Harris.

When ego and real life idiocy trumps fiction.

I enjoy Don's work, mostly as listened to read by Ray Porter. The first two books of this series are quite good. You can't help but feel Don is a bit of a libertarian following the story. Unfortunately Don ceased being an author and became a Twitter activist before Book 3 and Book 3 is just a mess of a book simply allowing Don to say silly, false, wrong things about Donald Trump.

I don't like Trump. I appreciate in fiction nothing is true. But you know what Don was doing and it went beyond fiction to simple ignorance. It is unlikely Don can come back from the adulation provided his Twitter stream and simply write well again. But do read the first two books. Avoid this one at all costs.

A long journey.

A long journey, not just for protagonist Art Keller but the reader as well. Detailed description of the war on drugs and the fallout that results. Sad to read the impact on children, but at least it explains the long line at our borders attempting to escape the horrors of gang warfare driven by the drug trade.

I wondered at the one star ratings, given the tremendous ability Winslow has to weave a gripping tale and found that they were usually turned off by the veiled allusions to possible corruption in the Trump administration (gasp!). Did not take them long evidently to figure out who the possible top level villains were so if your tender sensibilities would take offense as a defender of the ex-Pres, this is not the book for you. (And I note the 4 and 5 star ratings outnumber the one stars by more than 8 times.)

However, this third volume, representing over 2,000 pages seems to represent some pretty solid research and reporting - well presented, a gripping read with memorable characters. Suggest you start with the first in the series and decide from there if you want to take a looong trip to the conclusion.

Agenda driven narrative 2 to 3 stars at best

3+ lbs and 700+ pages of political BS. Spends a lot of time promoting his lefty agenda then leaves you hanging with some of the characters that need following up on. This was a sad ending for what seems to be deadline driven drivel.

Had To Stop Half Way Through

First two books were very good. Had I know Winslow had Trump Derangement Syndrome I would have taken a pass on this one. I had to stop reading when it became clear this was more about making a statement about Trump than writing a good novel. It is so disturbing that Winslow feels its necessary to make up a fictitious name for the character and then not even try to hide the fact he’s talking about Trump. There was no mention of the Fast and Furious debacle because that was under Obama; however, I stopped reading so it may have been mentioned later on but I doubt it.

Winslow hates Trump.

I absolutely loved the first 2 books in this trilogy but this book really let me down. Seems it was written just to suggest Trump is owned by the Mexican drug cartels. Winslow has let his politics get in the way of his talent. If I wanted to read propaganda I would subscribe to the New York Times. Don't think I will ever buy another of his books.

Quick delivery,I’m sure it will be a great read

I purchased other books from Don Winslow and was never disappointed . This came very quickly. It’s a gift,
so I’m very grateful.

Loses all credibility

His writing is usually so wel done, but inserting a Trump-like presidential candidate and linking him to drug cartel money destroys all credibility to the story. I guess this guy believed in the Russia hoax. Otherwise a decent read.

Pathetic

Starts off as a very entertaining and engaging read but then, after significant commitment on my part—story simply dissolves into ridiculous political dribble. My God, how can anyone with half a brain buy into any of this leftist BS.
I won’t be investing any further time or money into this author,
Just awful.
