Description

“The souls of men are begging to cry and it’s time to release the pain. Cry Like a Man is a key that Jason Wilson is using to unlock the door for men of all ethnicity to release that pain through tears, transparency, and love rather than through fighting, unresolved anger, and abuse.” xa0 -- Lewis Howes, New York Times bestselling author of The School of Greatness“Jason Wilson is a gift to our nation that’s enslaved by a dangerous and ridiculous understanding of masculinity. He’s coaching us how to rear real men who know that emotions empower us, growing our capacity for courage, love, faith, hope, and so much more. As the Irish proverb says, ‘Never trust a warrior who cannot cry.’ He’s creating a new kind of warrior. Learn from him. Support him. Join him.”xa0 -- Paul Coughlin, founder and president of The Protectors“I am so excited about Jason Wilson’s new book, Cry Like a Man . Through personal stories and lessons that apply to all, Wilson shows us the power of connecting with our emotions in an increasingly disconnected world. This is a must-read for any brother seeking to better understand what he feels and why and for any sister seeking to discern the same.” xa0 -- Joshua Dubois, CEO of Values Partnerships“Jason Wilson writes a new narrative in the hearts of our black boys, one that liberates them to be the whole beautiful human beings God designed them to be.”xa0 -- Trabian Shorters, founder and CEO of BMe Network“Growing up playing football, you are taught to never show weakness. No matter what the situation was, I was told to always ‘be a man’ and suck it up. Unfortunately, that mentality forced me to bottle up my emotions, causing some long-term negative effects and conflicts in my life. Jason Wilson is leading the way to freedom from emotional incarceration.”xa0 -- Reggie Bush, Heisman Trophy Winner; Super Bowl Champion Jason Wilson is the director of the Cave of Adullam Transformational Academy (CATTA), a program of The Yunion nonprofit organization he founded in 2003. The CATTA has been featured on The Dr. Oz Show , Today , and CNN. In addition to more than twenty years of training and developing young men, Wilson is a faithful husband of twenty years and a proud father of two beautiful children. Features & Highlights

  • As a leader in teaching, training, and transforming boys in Detroit, Jason Wilson shares his own story of discovering what it means to “be a man” in this life-changing memoir.
  • His grandfather’s lynching in the deep South, the murders of his two older brothers, and his verbally harsh and absent father all worked together to form Jason Wilson’s childhood. In
  • Cry Like a Man
  • , Wilson explains the dangers men face in our culture’s definition of “masculinity” and gives readers hope that healing is possible.   As Wilson writes, “My passion is to help boys and men find strength to become courageously transparent about their own brokenness as I shed light on the symptoms and causes of childhood trauma and ‘father wounds.’ I long to see men free themselves from emotional incarceration—to see their minds renewed, souls weaned, and relationships restored.”

Trouble man finds God and important issues for our time.

Cry Like a Man is the autobiography of Jason Wilson. Wilson takes the reader into the subculture of African-American men coming of age in the big city. Jason Wilson, more than most, had an upbringing full of tragedy. Wilson's writing is honest, powerful, and includes relevant quotes from important persons and the Bible. Not to spoil the plot, but as the author finds God he is better able to genuinely express his emotions and not maintain the tough guy veneer demanded by the sub-culture.

Much has been written about racism, police brutality and as important as talking about those issues are, the harsh subculture where African-American teenage boys are pressured have sex with a girl to prove their manhood and where loyalty to peers is paramount over school and other considerations also have to be discussed. Also, the need for many African-American men, like the author, to be better fathers than their absent, emotionally distant, or abusive fathers is another issue for our time.

Until the very last chapter, Cry Like a Man is the story of the author’s life and how, through faith, he became a better man, son, husband, and father. This reviewer would have liked less about the author’s personal journey and more about the author’s twenty years as director of a nonprofit agency focused on helping the lives of young Black men. In addition to a few words about his own program, Wilson included a listing of similar agencies. A few pages of text that will undoubtedly help many.

For his efforts in trying to make the world a better place Wilson deserves five stars, however, his book deserves only four.

A needed first read for 2019

As an emerging young adult, I too have been pressured to live life under a false and worldly facade under the guise of real manhood. This book has not only shattered the vain societal notions of what it means to be a man but it also empowered me to seek real and biblical manhood. Jason’s book developed in me an interest in more of his work and I thank God for letting this book catch my attention in the bookstore. I highly recommend this to all fellow believers whether male or not, especially fellow millennials.

Most impactful book of my adult life

Even as a white male, the lack of a father or verbally abusive fathers also affected me, and those parts connected. I purchased physical copies of the book for my friends and family because this book moved me, and I'm eagerly excited for his new one Battle Cry. I originally heard this on audiobook.
