Description

"Whether you have been porting your own cylinder heads for years or have someone else porting with or without a flow bench, buy them this book!" ( Engine Professional 2012-04-01)Appears in "Top 21 Reading Materials for the Auto Enthusiast." -Auto Enthusiast, January 2013 (Andy Bolig Auto Enthusiast 2012-12-04) In certain terms, the more air your cylinder head flows, the more horsepower your engine can make. Porting cylinder heads allows you to flow more air and unlock hidden performance potential. As a result, you can extract significant horsepower and torque gains. To port heads, it takes a craftsman’s touch to shape the passages of the head for the most efficient airflow and effective combustion of the fuel charge. To verify this work, you need to flow test the heads on a flow bench. In this ground-breaking book, porting master and engine building wizard David Vizard covers all the nuances of porting heads and how to build an affordable flow bench to test the results. Porting cylinder heads is an art and a science. It’s like sculpting a piece of clay into a glorious final form and, therefore, it demands the right tools, skills, and application of knowledge. With 50 years of experience and uncommon acumen, David Vizard explains the principles, philosophy, and techniques for extracting maximum performance from cylinder heads. All the aspects of porting stock and aftermarket heads in aluminum and cast iron are covered. Vizard explains how to optimize flow paths through the heads, past the valves, and into the combustion chamber. He covers blending the bowls, pocket porting, unshrouding the valves, porting the intake runners, and many other advanced procedures. All of these changes combine to produce optimal flow velocity through the engine for the maximum power. If you’ve always wanted to port your heads but didn’t have information to confidently obtain the best results, now you do. David Vizard is a revered engine builder and acknowledged Chevy big-block engine expert, which is why GM contracted him to develop several engine packages for the Chevy big-block crate program. He has authored more than 30 highly respected engine-building and automotive titles, penned about 4,000 magazine articles, and contributed scores of web articles to popular sites. Often referred to as "Vizard the Wizard," his work is often the subject of blogs and editorial pieces in popular automotive magazines. He currently owns and runs an engine research and development business in Charlotte, North Carolina. Read more

Now I know why my mildly ported heads have been ...

Now I know why my mildly ported heads have been out performing the other guys who try to do a full port job. Read this book instead of watching the guys on youtube who do not know what they are doing. This book is a must read even if you are not doing your own head porting. You will know the difference between someone that knows how to port a head and someone who just plays an air flow expert on TV.

useless for me

First of all I am going to say that David Vizard is awesome at what he does. OK, I Give it three stars because I know it will be useful for the US v8 guys. This book is entirely useless to me since I don't own a chevy, ford or any other v8 from detroit. I gave up on those years ago. The market really needs a porting book about the lexus v8 bmw 6 and 8 and all the 16 and 20 valve head 4 cylinders. Info about non US v8 consisted of half a page. I will be giving this book away to my chevy loving neighbor and if he is diligent and listens to mr Vizard he will have a powerful engine that might keep up with me until we get to the curves.

Read this before you start grinding, it will save you from damaging your parts.

A lot of info in this book. You won't be porting to NASCAR engine standards but the information David gives readers is necessary reading prior to porting heads. Also, this book will give you additional insight on the multitude of variables that contribute to a good running engine.

Good information

The information in this book is very complete and easy to understand. As with some of Vizard's other books, this one also suggests the authors huge egotistical personality.

good reference book

this is a good book despite the self indulgence of the author
his text and drawing content is very good and enlightening to a person with a bent towards the subject matter he definatly imparts a good deal of quality info
however he is enamoured with graphs, they explain everthing!! if you have a degree
in quantum physics. some are self explanatory but the bulk of them there is no explanation that make sense of them to me the left school in the eight grader
I am by no means smart or stupid just a small note in how to interpret each graph would have made this a superb book and I am still glad I paid for it and had it sent to Australia
would be head porter from down under
