Description

From School Library Journal Grade 3-6-Brightly colored, exquisitely detailed prehistoric creatures brimming with personality square off against menacing-looking mechanical monsters in this luxuriantly illustrated-but lamely plotted-prequel to Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time (Turner, 1992; o.p.) and its spin-offs. Having replaced all of its animals with massive, iron-gray robots, the Empire of Poseidos mounts an attack on Highnest, home of Dinotopia's pterosaurs. Luckily, young Poseidonian orphan Gideon Altaire, along with (taking a cue from the Disney bible) a gaggle of cute, squabbling nonhuman sidekicks, arrives to save the day. Children will be drawn to the flashy, dramatic paintings, but are likely to skip the text-especially since isolated lines printed in larger, differently colored type serve as captions to each scene. A fold-out game board with perforated sheets of character and action cards makes this problematic for libraries, even without the trite story line. Alan Dean Foster's full-length "Dinotopia" novels (HarperCollins) have more to offer. John Peters, New York Public Library Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc. James Gurney's fantasy art has appeared on the covers of more than 70 books, and his art appears regularly in National Geographic . He is the author and illustrator of Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time, Dinotopia: The World Beneath, and is currently working on his third Dinotopia book, which will be published in Fall 2000. He lives in the Hudson Valley of New York State with his family.

Poorly Done

I love the other 3 Dinotopia books which are amazingly done. The story in this one is sub-par, but not horrible, it is the pictures that are disappointing. They are nowhere in the realm of the other books and makes me wonder how long Gurney actually spent putting this book together. I bought it even though I had read the other reviews with similar comments because I wanted all 4 books to have a complete set. I don't regret buying it because of the desire to have a complete set, but it doesn't stand up to the others ones at all so I don't recommend it to others to spend their money on.

Not as good

I was excited when I received this book, but was very dissapointed when I started reading it. It is no where near as good as the other ones. The characters are not developed very well and the story line is short and almost cheesy. The illustrations are wonderful as always, but I would definitly say that this is my least favorite of the series.

An Ok Sequel

While I am a huge fan of the Dinotopia series overall, I felt that First Flight somehow failed to capture the charm that makes the other books so wonderful. The narrative, though action-packed, was not quite as engaging as I had come to expect from the series. Of course, the visuals are the main reason anybody buys a Dinotopia book, but surprisingly, even these did not capture my imagination the same way as previous and subsequent titles. Though James Gurney is a master illustrator and the paintings that grace the pages of this book are very well-done, again, somehow a certain bit a charm seems to be lacking. Don't get me wrong, it is still a beautiful book, and I don't think any fan of Dinotopia or dinosaurs in general would regret buying it, but I would recommend buying the other books in the series first, and save this one to complete your collection later.
