Description

“Remarkable. . . . From its first pages it reveals . . . why it made Gallegos famous. . . . If Señor Gallegos is one-half as good a President as he is a novelist, Venezuela is a lucky land.” ― New York Times “An exciting heroic tale of the life of Venezuelan plainsmen, master and peons, ranchers and cowboys and horse thieves.” ― New Republic Unlike the austere plain I grew up on, Gallegos’s llano is steamy, tumescent, lust-driven.xa0Dona Barbara may have been a kind of anticipation of Eva Peron.xa0She owns a great ranch, the Altimara, but must struggle constantly to keep it.xa0She is, in her way, a tragic heroine, seeking to attract a decent lover, while giving herself day and night to very coarse lovers indeed.xa0xa0xa0 She is, however, very vividly drawn, a Bovary of the llano. In the prose one will now and then hear Conradian echoes, and certainly there are echos of Gallegos in Garcia Marquez, Vargas Lhosa, and Fuentes.xa0xa0xa0 Let us hope this attractive reprint will bring Romolo Gallegos the readers he deserves. -- Larry McMurtry ― from the Foreword Rómulo Gallegos (1889–1969) was a Venezuelan novelist and politician who served briefly as the nation’s first democratically elected president. After publishing Doña Barbara , he was forced to flee to Spain but returned in 1936 to hold a variety of political offices. He was again forced out by a coup d’etat in 1948, returned in 1958, then was elected senator for life.

All of the action is set against the stunning backdrop of the Venezuelan prairie, described in loving detail. Beautiful

The story of the South American plains was published nearly 90 yrs. ago. The story evokes wildness of place, and people unbound by "civilized" laws. All elements of a spellbinding story are present: mystery, intrigue, suspense. The yearnings, ambitions, regrets, triumphs of the human heart are beautifully written and translated. Though not necessary to understand the story, there are words in Spanish and for those interested in the translation, there is actually a web site devoted to Dona Barbara translations.

Wonderful Book

I discovered this as number 100 on PBS America Reads list. It certainly deserves to be ranked higher. I think it would be ranked higher if more people were familiar with it. The writing and translation are excellent and the story is compelling. You should try this book!

Intriquiring Story and History of the Venezuela Los Llanos

Loved the story, the only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because if I understood Spanish am sure the original is even more engaging as far as the prose.

Weak translation

This is an interesting historical novel bug the translation doesn’t seem very good. The Spanish is supposed to be poetic but the English doesn’t come close to that description

A hidden gem!

This one of the finest Latin American novels I have ever read! Reading this novel is taking a delightful voyage to a breathtaking land, inhabited by fascinating characters. Gallegos is a first-rate writer; he is also a clear precursor to contemporary Latin American writers such as the Nobel laureates Garcia Marquez and Vargas Llosa. If you wish to enjoy the landscape of the South American prairie and get a taste of the culture of its people, you should definitely read this book.
