I think every new (and old) parent should have this. When a child is sick the Internet can be overwhelming. This covers most problems along with the question "Should I go to the doctor?"

Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care 9th Edition - 65th Anniversary

I used Dr. Spock's original baby book in 1961 and 1964 when I had my children and loved it, and still have that book. Purchased one for my daughter when she had her children in 1984, and she loved it.

This revised edition was purchased by me for my eldest daughter who has begun caring for an infant and a two-year old. With this being her first time to care for children. I thought this would be an easy to carry, quick go-to reference for her, and one she could stick in her purse. Not the case with this 3 inch, larger edition, much too bulky for that!

I am very disappointed. Quality of book itself is poor, cheap paper, the print is too light and small, not easy to read, it is way too thick, not a handy size like Dr. Spock first wrote and had published. I contemplated returning the book for these reasons, but decided to let her evaluate first and see if it's something she wants to deal with. She still has not gotten the book, so it is still new, as I only quickly observed the size, print, and feel of the book. It is very cheaply put together, terribly thick, and just not user friendly. I thought I was getting an updated version of Dr. Spock's 1960's version and that it would be the right size to throw into her purse and go! If she feels the same way, I will return the book.

Good Book

My wife loved this book. Spock delivers advice with a warm tone and a cool humor that is very calming to his intended audience. A fantastic parenting book for first timers.

Great reference book for new parents!

I ordered this book for myself when I had a newborn based on my mom always quoting "Dr.Spock" from her days raising kids! It is a great reference to anything that could possibly come up with taking care of children! This is my go-to gift along with a cute baby outfit for new parents!

Straightforward but outdated

I was given this by my Mother, who found it a helpful reference while raising me in the early 1980s. I appreciate the straightforward and mostly common sense advice about a range of issues for infants through children.
I found some of the specific advice lacking in supporting evidence. For example, Dr. Spock or Dr. Needlman give advice about dog ownership - not only instructing on child's behavior around dogs, but also advice against adopting certain dog breeds. The authors' notes to avoid certain "high-strung breeds" is outdated and makes the reader suspect that other outdated advice may remain within the pages of the "updated" editions.
This specific paperback is a very awkward size, as other reviewers have mentioned; it's too big for one hand and too small for two.
Overall, I feel like this book is a helpful reference to start with but I would look for a second opinion before following the advice.
