The Perfect Cast Iron and Outdoor Cooking Companion

I love this book. A colleague had an older edition so when this, the 3rd edition came out, I scooped it up right away.

It's extremely well-written, and the presentation is excellent. Beautiful pictures and while it is paperback, it's pretty rugged so it will take some punishment if you're taking it out on a trip.

The author starts with some background and history on cast iron and cooking with it. It's also peppered with little bits of information that you will find useful such as a trick for keeping mosquitos away.

There is an excellent assortment of recipes inside. Each of which is laid out clearly and easy to follow. I've made a couple of these previously and I have not been disappointed. You'll get a sense for how many each recipe will feed along with the ideal device to cook it in.

Whether you're new to the world of cast iron cooking or an expert looking for some new ideas, this book will make an excellent addition to your library.

Not just for Dutch ovens...

some of the recipes require a pie iron, or a skillet. The skillet stuff might be able to be done in a Dutch oven, but the pie iron recipes cannot go without one. The book does tell you how to cook some recipes over the stove and the fire.
There is an impressive section of side dishes and breakfast items for feeding large groups.
Great starter book for anyone who knows nothing about cast iron cookware. The beginning of the book goes through the different types of wares (griddles, skillets, etc.) and how to prime, maintain, and general care of cast iron cookware.

My Only Complaint is the recipes are for BIG MEALS

If you are making food for two or three people, this book probably isn't for you. You will spend half the time converting all the ingredients into different amounts and the other half cooking. As long as you are cooking for a family of 4 that likes to EAT, this is an amazing book. Lots of great recipes.
