Description

"One of the greatest lyric poets in our language." ― John Logan, Modern American Poetry "To return to…his poems is to return to a buoyancy and boisterousness, of course, but also to an odd bountifulness…[encapsulating] a profound sense of wonder and wistfulness." ― Paul Muldoon, The New Yorker "Cummings was one of the most spirited and original American writers of the 20th century." ― Wall Street Journal E. E. Cummings (1894–1962) was among the most influential, widely read, and revered modernist poets. He was also a playwright, a painter, and a writer of prose. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard University and, during World War I, served with an ambulance corps in France. He spent three months in a French detention camp and subsequently wrote The Enormous Room , a highly acclaimed criticism of World War I. After the war, Cummings returned to the States and published his first collection of poetry, Tulips & Chimneys , which was characterized by his innovative style: pushing the boundaries of language and form while discussing love, nature, and war with sensuousness and glee. He spent the rest of his life painting, writing poetry, and enjoying widespread popularity and success. George J. Firmage edited many works by Cummings, including Erotic Poems ; Complete Poems, 1904– 1962 ; and Fairy Tales . Stephen Dunn (1939–2021) was the author of twenty poetry collections, including the Pulitzer Prize–winning Different Hours . He was a distinguished professor emeritus at Richard Stockton University. Over his six-decade career, he received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, an Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a Paterson Award for Sustained Literary Achievement, among many other honors.

Features & Highlights

  • Presented here in a bold new edition, E. E. Cummings: Complete Poems 1904–1962 showcases Cummings’s transcendent body of work, collected in its entirety.
  • Combining Thoreau’s controlled belligerence with the brash abandon of an uninhibited bohemian, E. E. Cummings, together with Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, and William Carlos Williams, helped bring about the twentieth-century revolution in literary expression. Today Cummings is recognized as the author of some of the most sensuous lyric poems in the English language, as well as one of the most inventive American poets of his time. Formally fractured and yet gleefully alive and whole, at once cubistic and figurative, Cummings’s work expanded the boundaries of what language is and can do.
  • With a new introduction by Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Stephen Dunn, this redesigned, newly corrected, and fully reset edition of
  • Complete Poems
  • collects and presents all the poems published or designated for publication by E. E. Cummings in his lifetime. It includes 36 poems that were first collected in the 1991 edition and 164 unpublished poems issued in 1983 under the title Etcetera. It spans his earliest creations, his vivacious linguistic acrobatics, up through his last valedictory sonnets.
  • In the words of Randall Jarrell, “No one else has ever made avant-garde, experimental poems so attractive to the general and special reader.”

Perfect Collection

All of e.e. cummings' poetry in one place - what more could you ask for? It's not a sit down and read it all at once kind of book - but boy have I enjoyed picking this up and randomly flipping to pages and devouring what's there. He writes beautifully.

The book quality is good. The poems, well...

Listen. Maybe I'm a fool for not researching a white writer from the early 1900s to see if he had some troubled notions before purchasing his complete works. I was enamored with "somewhere I have never traveled..." And "I carry your heart with me..." And thought I'd find more of the same. And there are.

But there's also poems about having sex with child prostitutes, racial and antisemitic slurs, and other yucky stuff. I know, I know, don't judge the past by today's lense of morals and all that but phewww. It makes me feel not great about owning his works, you know? I've read that people said he was writing like that in a tongue-in-cheek satirical way to draw attention to things but it doesn't really feel that way. I guess take the good and leave the rest and you'll like it? It certainly is a comprehensive tome.

Great Collection!

I purchased this rather hefty and thick book of E.E. Cummings' work for a friend who is a devoted fan as a gift. Her old copy from decades ago was literally falling apart with yellowed, brittle pages. She was delighted upon receiving it and marveled at the great condition the book was in. There was as silky smoothness to the pages that either one of us couldn't' quite place. In all, it was a solid purchase and I'm glad my friend enjoyed the gift.

The condition was worse than expected

The book was hit pretty hard and not well described in the listing. I probably would have opted to pay more had I known.

Pretty Dispappointed

I love E.E. Cummings and was so excited to find this book. I bought a new one and didn’t mind spending the extra money on it... that was until I received it and noticed the huge knick in on the front cover... if I would’ve known it was going to be damaged, I would’ve saved myself the money and bought a used one.

Condition of a used book should be described prior to purchase

Unfortunately, the book was used, which I did not realize, though I probably would have ordered it anyway. However, the cover was soiled somehow and there were two sales tag stickers wrapped around the spine and part of the back cover that were impossible to cleanly remove. It took me a long time to try to make the book marginally presentable for my extensive collection of books of poetry and about poets. I am glad to have this book, but the experience does not deserve a high rating.

to truly enjoy his elegant humor

Just received it today! I'm very excited to read so many I didn't even know were there. As usual, when reading e.e.cummings, I must read slower & thoughtfully, to truly enjoy his elegant humor. Now that I own it I can take my time. Now I need to discover his stories.

It's good to have the complete poems in my library however ...

It's good to have the complete poems in my library however the single volume is heavy and unwieldy for casual use. A 2 volume set would be more useful.

Poor pack and ship

This is a thick, heavy book with a paper cover/sleeve and it was shipped loose in a box where it was able to bang around and damage the sleeve. Any kind of padding would have saved it.
