Description

About the Author Priscilla Shirer is a wife and a mom first, but put a Bible in her hand and a message in her heart and you’ll see why thousands meet God in powerful, personal ways at her conferences and through her Bible studies. For the past twenty years, Priscilla has been in full-time ministry to women. She and her husband Jerry have founded Going Beyond Ministries and count it as their privilege to serve believers across the entire spectrum of the body of Christ. Priscilla is the author of more than a dozen books and Bible studies on a myriad of topics and Biblical characters including discerning the voice of God, the exodus, the armor of God, Jonah, and Gideon.

Features & Highlights

  • Old Testament heroes are best known for their most celebrated moments: Moses dividing the Red Sea; David slaying Goliath; Gideon routing an insurmountable army; Joshua marching around the defiant walls of Jericho. And Elijah—calling down fire on Mount Carmel. Blinded by the remarkable narratives of our biblical heroes, we can forget they each had a backstory—months and years of development, even difficulty, which fortified their spiritual muscle and prepared them for the tasks that made their lives unforgettable. Every serious believer longs to summon up the kind of boldness and faith that can stand firm on Mount Carmel and pray down heaven into impossible situations. Yet few are willing to go through the process required to get them there. Strength of faith, character, and boldness can only be shaped in the hidden fires of silence, sameness, solitude, and adversity. Those who patiently wait on God in the darkness emerge with their holy loyalty cemented, their courage emblazoned, and their confident belief in Him set afire. Join

An Old Testament hero with a message for you right now!

This is yet another excellent study by Priscilla!
She writes as if she is sitting across the table looking at you and listening to you.
Elijah is an Old Testament hero that actually has a lot for us to learn from. Especially how to pray and how to move more deeply into our relationship with God.
Her writing is practical and the study asks very good questions that invites you into deeper Scripture study AND asks you questions that allow you to look closely at yourself. She moves toward helping you recognize God moving in your life—because He is!!! We need her help to “clean our glasses” to see Him at work. And she does a very fine job in this study.
I find her studies are good for individuals to study privately as well as for group study. There are videos soon available, or you can open your Bible and use this study guide without the video. I believe the videos will be icing on the cake to these studies!

Not a Study for the Mature Believer

New Comment added Oct 21 2021: My group is in week 5 of this study and now my concerns are the author ADDS to Scripture. For example, she states that Elijah did not want to go to the widow because she was non-Jewish and lived in a non-Jewish town. Certainly, using good hermenuetics, one might INFER that to be true; however, Shirer doesn't state it as if it is her INFERENCE--she states it as a fact. Not good for those who do not know how to read scripture critically. Certainly, as scripture explicitly states, Jonah didn't want to go to Nineveh; Jesus didn't want to drink the cup, but scripture does NOT state Elijah did not want to go to the widow. Another example is when Elijah is using 12 stones to build the altar; Shirer says it was God's plan for the 12 tribes to be a unit. Scripture does NOT say that. In fact, in 1st Kings 12:24 , God specifically refers to the split of the Kingdom as HIS doing. Shirer does A LOT of inferring to make her point AND she NEVER states it's her inference. For anyone with the prophet gifting, you will definitely struggle with this study. I am so disappointed--and concerned--that my church leadership picked this study.

I am so disappointed with this study. Shirer begins the study using an analogy of the beauty of a ballerina's foot in its shoe compared to the bloody and bandaged foot hidden in that shoe. She uses that analogy to introduce her point: "Everyone wants the glory, but few are willing to pay the price required to get it." And, she contends, that is how we read scripture: all rosy, all happy, all good. Perhaps, that is Shirer's experience, but it certainly isn't mine. I feel she is writing to people who have never suffered, and is attempting to prepare others for the suffering to come. But anyone who has already walked through the fire (or, is walking through it) is quite realistic of the contradictions displayed in the biblical stories. And the person who has walked through the fire has learned obedience and perseverance. I dislike when a writer of Bible Studies assumes her/his reader knows nothing. Another example is she spends a lot of time writing about putting people on pedestals, and proceeds to have a lot of questions about that. It doesn't even occur to her that a reader does not put people on pedestals. What about considering that person? What about a question such as: If you are not one to put people on pedestals, what do you suppose caused you to be that way? Have you always been that way? Or, is it something you learned after becoming a Christ-follower? Another example: she asks how does it encourage you to realize Elijah struggled? Well, it doesn't encourage me at all. What encourages me is Romans 5:3-5. Someone's failings does not make me feel better that I'm not the only one to fail. Absurd!! Another is her injunction to quit hiding one's humanity. We show our humanity every time we ask the Brethren to pray for us. Anyway, all that to say I am very disappointed with such a naive bible study. Oh, and one final comment: People, amazon reviews are about the material written, Not missing pages. You have missing pages? Contact amazon for an exchange.
