A NOTE FROM OUR AUTHOR It is impractical to try and learn every fact or concept in an EMS textbook. An EMS student must be able to distinguish the “must know” from the rest of the material presented. That’s what this book does:it emphasizes the “must know” content. This Crash Course is unique because it’s designed for those who are one test away from direct patient care in potentially dangerous circumstances. This publication is not a substitute for a well-written textbook or participation in a high-quality EMS training program, but rather as a bridge between your training and your certification exam. This bookhelps you focus on the knowledge necessary to pass the NREMT certification exam and function competently as an EMT.In EMT class, students take a test after the lesson. When you are an EMS provider, the test comes unannounced and the lesson is learned afterward. When you are not prepared for class, you risk apoor grade. When you are not prepared on the street, the patient pays the price. As you work your way through this book, imagine yourself certified, hired, and on duty for your very first shift. You have just been dispatched to the community pool. There are reports of a fire in astorage room near the pool with a number of people fleeing the area. The dispatcher tells you a lifeguard is performing CPR on a child pulled from the water during the evacuation. You don’t know if you will be the first EMS unit on the scene . . .You don’t know what was in the storage room or what hazards await you . . .You don’t know how many patients are waiting for your help, or what might be wrong with them…You don’t know if you will be caring for the pediatric drowning victim or other patients . . .With this scenario in mind, read through this book and ask yourself, “What do I really need to know to handle this call?”Study hard and good luck on your certification exam.Be safe!Chris Coughlin, NREMT-P, Ph.D. Preparing for Success on the NREMT Certification Exam 1 Serving the public as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is among today’s most rewarding careers. The overwhelming majority of states in the U.S. require that you pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam to become certified and work as an EMT. Certification through the NREMT indicates that you have demonstrated entry-level competency as an EMT. The NREMT certification exam is a “pass/fail” test. Its purpose is not to identify who is the “best,” but to identify who is “competent.” Your future patients don’t care what you scored on your certification exam. They care about receiving competent and compassionate care for themselves and those they care about. This Crash Course gives you the essential information you need to prepare for the NREMT certification exam. THE EXAM The NREMT exam is a computer-adaptive test (CAT). The test tailors itself to your individual abilities. The exam delivers questions one at a time and the questions are not randomly chosen. While you are taking the test, the software that drives the test is estimating your ability level. The ability estimate gets more and more precise as the exam progresses. The exam ends when there is a 95% certainty that your demonstrated competency is above or below the passing standard. TOPICS COVERED ON THE EXAM Your NREMT exam will have between 70 and 120 questions and you will have two hours to complete the test. All of the questions will be multiple-choice and each question will have 4 answer choices. You need to choose the “best” answer for the question posed. The exam will broadly cover the content of the 2009 National EMS Education Standards (NEMSES). Topics will include airway, oxygenation, ventilation, cardiology, resuscitation, stroke, trauma,xa0medical emergencies, obstetrics, gynecology, and EMS operations. Here are the percentages for the topics found on the exam. NREMT Exam Topics % of Test by Topic Airway and ventilation 17–21%Cardiology, resuscitation, stroke 16–20%Trauma 19–23%Medical and OB/GYN 27–31%EMS operations 12–16% For all but EMS operations, 85% of the questions relate to adult patients and 15% relate to pediatric patients. Although not separate categories, topics such as patient assessment and safety will be emphasized throughout the test. SCORING Typically, you can retrieve your score from the NREMT website 24 hours after you complete the exam. If you fail the exam, the NREMT will provide some detailed information about your performance on each of the exam categories. Candidates must wait at least 14 days before taking the test again. STANDARDS Like the NREMT certification exam, the information in this publication is based on the 2009 National EMS Education Standards and the 2010 American Heart Association CPR and Emergency Cardiac Care Guidelines. This Crash Course will help you become familiar with these standards before taking the certification exam. For more information about the 2009 NEMSES, visit www.ems.gov/education/nationalstandardandncs.html . GENERAL TEST-TAKING TIPS & STRATEGIES BEFORE THE TEST • Eat a balanced meal and get plenty of rest. • Don’t cram. Your preparation should end (not begin) the day before the test. • Avoid caffeine, energy drinks, excess sugar, etc. These will not improve your performance or steady your nerves. • Study regularly over an extended period before the test. • Know exactly where the test center is and plan to arrive a few minutes early. Remember, you must have an appointment to take the test. Bring two forms of photo ID. • The testing center may be cold. Bring something warm in case you need it. DURING THE TEST • You cannot skip a question or come back to it later. You must answer each question before the next one will be provided. • Read the whole question thoroughly at least a couple of times and formulate the answer in your head before you look at the answer choices. If you see a similar answer choice, that’s probably the correct response. • There are four answer choices. Two of them can often be eliminated after reading the question thoroughly. • When you get stuck, look for key words in the question and re-read the answer choices. When in doubt, lean towards the more aggressive treatment. For example, if you are not sure whether you should ventilate the patient or just administer oxygen, choose to ventilate. • Do not complicate scenario-based questions. Do not bring elements into the questions that are not there. • Relax! Remember, everyone is going to feel like the test is extremely challenging. Everyone is going to miss a lot of questions. This does NOT mean you are failing. Read more

Best EMT review book

I took my emt course a year and a half ago, and for various reasons didn't get a chance to take the written exam. When I took the written exam for the first time a few months back, I failed it- I didn't have time to fully prepare for it even though I did lots of practice tests.

I bought this book a week before my second attempt and I have to say it was the main reason why I passed the second time. It served as an excellent study guide, helping me review the most important and essential information. I am so glad I found this book!

Online Access Code Does Not Work - multiple 2016 reviews w/ same problem -- book itself is OK review tool

This is a review for the book [[ASIN:0738610062 EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) Crash Course Book + Online (EMT Test Preparation)]], which is a review and study guide/test preparation tool for the NREMT Cognitive Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) Certification Exam. As listed on the front cover and the Amazon product page, the book includes the material in the book as well as (supposedly) an online access code for a "free online practice exam" which covers all the areas of the NREMT and will help "to pinpoint where you're strongest and where you need to focus."

I'll start with the bad: The online access code does not work at all. I have no idea whether the website itself simply no longer works or what the issue is. However I purchased the book brand new from Amazon, largely based on the fact that it included the online access code. When I went to register it on the website I received an error that the code wasn't accepted or recognized. After trying to enter it multiple times the website displayed a screen stating the code wasn't in the database and that it would send a message to the site administrators and give me access to the content temporarily while they addressed the issue. However, after confirming the code again and submitting that 'verification' page the website then displayed ANOTHER error stating it could not submit that data and giving me no way forward. I e-mailed the only contact address on the website, but did not receive a response. If I do eventually receive access to the online website and practice test I will update this review with a detailed evaluation of the online component.

In looking through recent reviews it appears I am not the first person to have problems with online access codes for the EMT book failing to work in 2016, but those negative reviews are not being generally displayed to Amazon customers prior to purchase due to their standard filtering settings. As a result of the multiple recent reviews with this same problem I'm unsure whether the website and online access simply no longer work, or are a marketing ploy. Especially if you are looking for review with an online component before testing in the near future I would not recommend buying this book, as even if the publisher does eventually fix this problem and get me a working online access code to a working website, I will have lost a good chunk of valuable study time - I test in under 2 weeks.

That said, there is some good news about the book itself: The book shows an original copyright date of 2012, but a publication date of 2016, so it appears to have been updated or at least reviewed somewhat recently. The information and questions in it seem to be reasonably current and generally match with what was in the standard AAOS 10th edition (2011) EMT textbook, and I personally like the format. As you can see in the photo the chapters are basically an outline-type rundown of the major information and facts that you should know for your exam. They present the critical and important information, and seem to omit a lot of the 'filler' information that recent EMT textbooks delight in throwing at students.Do keep in mind that this book is NOT intended to teach you to be an EMT from scratch -- it won't replace your textbook or a formal EMT course entirely, so if it's been a year or more since your course and you're just now looking to test you'd be well served to break out your formal textbook and reread some of the actual chapters, especially on anything you feel weak on, as well. The book also includes information on how to prepare for the NREMT Computer Adaptive Test exam itself, and some tips on how to take a CAT-based test which is very different from typical pen-and-paper exams, or even from a traditional computer based test where you're able to skip and go back to questions, etc.

If you're only purchasing this book as a stand-alone, physical book to use as a review tool for your NREMT then it may be worthwhile, especially if you can get it either used or inexpensively. However, if you are looking to buy it with the intention of using the online portion then as of 2016 I would not purchase it until the publisher and multiple current reviews have confirmed that they have fixed their problems

Good for reviewing concepts, would not recommend to prepare for NREMT exam

This book covers all of the core concepts and I would definitely recommend it for someone wanting to refresh their knowledge as a provider for their own sake. However, the NREMT exam asks questions that are more specific than anything this covers, and if you are relying on this to refresh and prepare for the exam, you're going to get a lot of questions that are not covered by this general summary.

The keycode for the test doesn't work

I bought this book for my nephew. The layout is great for studying those important key facts but when he went to use the key code to take the test it told him it was not valid. He sent an email to the company but has not heard back. As it stands now he can take the test but would need to pay an additional charge of $5.95. Since he is not the only one this has happened too I wonder if this is some kind of rip off to make more money.

Excellent summary textbook/reference

Like many EMTs, I've had to suffer through Brady Publishing's "Prehospital Emergency Care," which is this dense, heavy, repetitive volume with far too much information and way too much detail for someone working within the EMT scope.

If you have a good mastery of EMT basics already and just need a reference, or you need to review without getting buried in the flowcharts, stories and pathophysiology minutiae of a 500 page EMT textbook, this "crash course" book will make you very happy. It has the essentials you need for emergency care distilled down into a concise and accessible package.

Even though it's meant to be a review/test prep book, I think it's great as a reference, but for that reason, I would have liked it to have an index.

I also found a few mistakes (grammatical) in the text, which reflects poorly...though the information itself seems to be accurate.

Great layout. Easy questions.

I bought this book after I failed the NREMT not once, but twice. I didn't study, and that was my fault. The book has a really nice layout that corresponded very well with the EMT textbook I got from my EMT class. I definitely recommend making flashcards either by hand or online (I used Quizlet) as there is a lot of information stored in here. One thing that this book was lacking though was that the free online exam they give you was definitely not as hard as the NREMT. At the end, they give you your strengths and weaknesses of each section, but like I said the practice questions were not that hard. Quick note: my access code didn't work on the website, but it allowed me to take the exam anyways, and they would address the issue. While it was annoying that my code didn't work, good customer service!

I don't know if there are better books out there, but this one helped me pass at the minimum of 70 questions. When I re-certify in the upcoming years, I will definitely use this book again!

Excellent Supplemental Study Material

I got this while going through the army combat medic course. I went from 0 medical knowledge aside from the basics, to passing the NREMT in 5 weeks and 3 days. My textbook was 1200 pages, so I turned to this to maximize my limited study time. It definitely helped me out a ton, getting right to these point of what I should memorize to help me out on the the test. This book would not replace any class you would need to take to pass the NREMT, but if you're struggling or rushing through it as a 68W, this is definitely a helpful study book to cut down on the sheer amount of information in most of the textbooks I saw. You learn the treatment process in class, and this book gives you the numbers and information you need to do that.

Glad I made the investment!

Thank goodness for this amazing study guide! If you're going into this field, you'll soon learn how confusing parts of the course can really be... And the National Registry... Thats a whole other ball game. This book really does help.

I'm definitely glad I made the investment in this study guide!
