Her behavior had recently undergone a drastic change and she had begun to kick over the traces. xa0 A delicious gasp escaped her lips as the man’s sexual intent became clear. He would not take no for an answer, and a sensual thrill ran through Diana because he would not be denied. He was dark and dominant and dangerous, exactly the way a man should be, and she felt her very bones melting from his bold advances. xa0 Diana’s nipples tightened and began to ache. Her woman’s center began to tingle in a most pleasurable way. The hand beneath her nightgown cupped her tender young breast so that her breathing quickened. Though Diana felt very wicked at that moment, she pushed away the tiny pang of guilt, curled on her side, and arched her mons at the pure titillation he aroused in her. xa0 A curse escaped her lips as the candle suddenly went out. Damn, she was right in the middle of the best part of the chapter. She removed her hand from her aching breast and snapped closed the book she had been reading about the intimate sex life of King Charles II. xa0 Diana relit the candle, finished the chapter, then sighed with longing. She would have preferred living in any other period of history to Georgian times. In this day and age all the men were fops, sporting ridiculous powdered wigs, fans, and lip rouge. Why couldn’t she have been born in medieval times when brawny knights stormed castles and abducted the women within, or Elizabethan times when the queen’s bold seafarers pirated women along with treasure? During the Restoration, swaggering cavaliers emulated King Charles’s devilish way with women, so that life for a young lady of seventeen was exhilarating, exciting, and exceedingly worth the living! xa0 Now the dandies emulated Prince George, or Prinny as he was nicknamed. What the hell sort of a name was Prinny? Actually, the name said it all … soft, silly, and stoopid with two o’s! xa0 As Diana leaned over to blow out the candle, she caught a glimpse of herself in the cheval glass. She was fair as an English rose ready to bloom. Her pale gold hair fell to her hips in silken curls, her violet eyes were brilliant with expectancy, her body was graceful with long legs and high, thrusting breasts, yet all she saw when she looked in the mirror was the voluminous nightgown she wore. Diana pulled a face, not because the nightdress was hideous, but because it was such a respectable garment. xa0 Lord above, how she had begun to loathe anything and everything respectable! Respectability was the force that ruled her Aunt Prudence and the measuring stick she used for everything connected with Diana’s life. xa0 Two years ago when Sir Thomas Davenport died, he left his daughter, Diana, his fortune, his magnificent library, and his house in Grosvenor Square. It was in trust until she turned eighteen, of course, and her guardians were her father’s younger brother, Richard, and his wife, Prudence, who immediately moved into Grosvenor Square to care for her. At fifteen Diana had been a biddable child who never had her nose out of a book. But by the time she turned seventeen, a wide streak of wilfulness had developed which clearly alarmed Diana’s prudish guardian. xa0 Diana sighed, blew out the candle, and curled under her blankets, hoping that sleep would bring her dreams of the more lustful days of King George. xa0 Aunt Prudence was readying herself for bed and bending her husband’s ear at the same time. Her frilled night rail was tied beneath her third chin while her starched nightcap sat just above her eyebrows. Which was just as well, thought Richard, repressing a shudder at the thought of her ever exposing her opulent flesh all at once. xa0 “Far be it from me to criticize our ward, Richard, but once again Diana has passed up an invitation from Lady Sefton only to carry one of those infernal books to bed. All this reading cannot be good for a young girl. Heaven only knows what could be in some of those tomes. Reading could give her unsavory … notions.” xa0 Richard decided it was no bad thing that Prudence was averse to intimacy and that sins of the flesh stood at the top of her list of taboos. As he eyed the ocean of white cotton enveloping his wife, he thought wryly, It’s a wonder she doesn’t wear white gloves to bed, in case she has to handle the beastly thing! His mind came back to the topic being discussed. “My brother’s collection is worth a fortune. I agree the books are a bad influence. I’m trying to find a buyer for the entire library.” xa0 Sir Thomas Davenport had been a chief judge and baron of the exchequer, who was a learned scholar, knighted by the king. Richard knew that Diana had been well educated in the classics and tutored by her father in French, Italian, and Latin. xa0 “My dear Richard, that is brilliant! Books will not help her catch the right sort of husband. If rumors get about that she is a bluestocking, she will sit on the shelf forever. I shall impress upon her again that she must hide her intelligence at all costs. I don’t know what your brother was about, educating a girl beyond what is proper. It’s just not respectable!” xa0 At the mention of his brother, Richard’s mouth tightened. Life was so bloody unfair. How had Thomas risen so high, while he, Richard, remained a struggling solicitor? And why had he left everything to Diana and nothing to his only brother? Not one bloody sausage! He’d thought of a hundred schemes to separate Diana from some of her money, but the girl was so clever he’d have to come up with a plan subtle enough to prevent her suspicions from being aroused. xa0 Prudence sailed toward the bed to turn back the covers. Richard undid his cravat. She eyed him with alarm. “You’re not coming to bed, are you?” xa0 “No, no, m’dear. Just changing my neckcloth. I have to entertain a client tonight.” xa0 Prudence let out a sigh of relief. Richard knew his wife was perfectly aware of just who would be the client and what sort of entertainment it would be and he also knew she was devoutly thankful he sought release elsewhere. She ought to be, and was, thankful that he was such a considerate husband. Read more

People Scare Me

I find it humorous that people don't like this book because it is unbelievable. It is a story about TIME TRAVEL! It is a ROMANCE novel! If you are looking for a believable story then get a non-fiction book. If you are looking for something deep try The Odyssey, The Illiad, The Forsyte Saga, Great Expectations, Meno, Phaedo, Crito, Apology, The Republic, Meditations on the First Philosophy...Something other than a romance novel.

If on the other hand you like fantasy romance novels, this was a good one.

Great Time Travel Read

This was a great time travel book. Diana travels back in time from the rule of Mad King George to the time of Roman rule in England. Diana is intrigued with anything from the Elizabethan era and finds her contemporary male counterparts lacking. While on a stroll from her plotting family she walks into a antique store and tries on for size a Roman Helmet. The next thing she knows she is in Bath during Roman Rule. While in Bath Diana falls in love with Roman General Marcus Magnus much to her dismay for to him she is nothing but a slave. But her situation can't come in between these two because they are soul mates and will experience many ups and downs before they will have their "Happily Ever After" ending. Such is the price when finding true love.
This is one of my favorite books by Henley. The Characters are likeable, and Diana is not one of those insipid, selfish, nasty characters that sometime find there way into her novels.
There is plenty of suspense, and of course there are the love scenes that Virgina is famous for. There is also the hisoric information that I love about her books. You almost can see yourself in Bath during the rule of the Romans. This is a book that I will keep.

If you're looking for something steamy....

One complaint I have about Virginia Henley's novels is that her characters follow traditional male/female ideals too closely. For example, Diana, the heroine, is described as intellectual, yet the main focus of the book is sex.
There are a few parts of the book which are not worth reading, such as the beginning before Diana travels back in time to 1st century Brittainia. I found Henley's description of Roman life to be intriguing, mixing historical details with her fictional characters imperceptibly.
I would not recommend this book for someone looking for a moving love story....but if you're in the mood for hot, bawdy sex...this book is for you!

Wow!

Why didn't anybody tell me about these books? Here I've been reading all these contemporary romances, bored out of my mind because they are all so predictable. I didn't realize that in the 70's 80's and early 90's, romances were so amazing. They are engaging, and not necessarily PC. This lack of propriety, makes them much more interesting, because anything can happen: violence, kidnapping, or in this case, time travel. This book was an epic romance, that was impossible to put down. It is steamier than most of today's romances (I was shocked). The declarations of love make you want to melt. It is such a fun, time travel romance. In fact, it is probably my favorite time travel romance. I'm so glad I decided to give the oldies a try. I was about to give up on romance books, but I'm glad I realized, that the ladies in the past decades really knew how to tell a story. The characters are developed. The plot is compelling. I'm going to the used bookstore to as many of these oldies as I can. And the best part is, these books are whole stories. No more of that cliffhanger trilogy foolishness.

Just OK...

This book was so high rated on Amazon I had to read it myself. The story had some very high moments, but some not so great ones as well. I wasn't happy with the way the romance played out, it was very unsatisfying to me. Also, there were too many sex scenes in the book. Yea, one when the characters get together is very satisfying, but the book verged on soft core porn. I also wasn't thrilled by some of the things our Hero did, though he seemed to redeem himself... at times. Allin allthe story was great, but I wasn't thrilled with the results. I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from reading this book, there were moments that were great, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

I like to be entertained

I enjoyed this book because it immediately "enslaved" my imagination. If you are looking for a book to read just for pure enjoyment then I suggest this book. I also implore you to read it with the intention and realization that this is fiction, meant to be nothing more...nor nothing less.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this one!

This is by far my favorite of Henley's works thus far. I don't know how truly accurate this is in terms of history (what with the time travel and idea of reincarnation), but the characters are lovable, as is the story and its details. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wishes to have a good laugh, a splendidly wicked amount of excitement, and maybe a pair of teary eyes too. Pick this one up, it's definitely worth it.

it'll do

i guess for the year it was publish Roman civ wasnt very well known outside of history class. and basically everything we encounter in this book is everything we learned from history class(or HBO's Rome) if you know absolutely nothing about Romans and WANT to learn a little then its great! but it was just too predictable. too textbook.. because i've encountered these "facts" time and again. where was the creativity?? and it was a bit over the top in the sex arena. according to my own history books Romans werent nearly as depraved as people believe them to be. for the most part they cherished chastity and virginity. there was one popular story about a young woman who killed herself just to avoid being ravished! and these people held public opinion in high regard.. much like Georgian/Regency era.
...or so i read in my own research.
Still i wont condemn it like others have. i admit i skipped a few pages because it just didnt interest me, got too repetitive after a while and too predictable.. but the majority of the book i liked. i loved Mark more than Marcus.. Marcus was just TOO manly... especially in the boar hunting scene.. if you know anything about boar hunting then you may agree ;) and the ending for Peter wasnt nearly satisfying enough. he died too easily(but thats MY character flaw). and i didnt really like that her aunt and uncle got away Scot free. but in spite of my dislikes it was good. good enough to earn it four stars anyway. why? because i love all things Roman and it DID hold me in suspense. but honestly i would have done things a bit differently....

One of her best. Wow

One of her best. Wow. This was unique and ahead of it's time. If the story wasn't so good, so intriguing, you may dislike the heroine but because it is just so good, you are okay with her. Although the Roman times were interesting I liked it much better when Diana and Mark Hardwick were together in the 18th century.
