Description

From Publishers Weekly Twenty-five years ago, self-proclaimed "faery authorities" Froud and Lee published the first edition of their imaginative faery field guide. Since then, the two have gone on to publish numerous faery books and contribute their ideas to such fantasy films as The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Legend and the new Lord of the Rings. This expanded version, like its predecessor, features pencil drawings and watercolors of mythical creatures, as well as brief descriptions of their origins and powers; it draws on a long history of phantasmagoric iconography in the generally occidental vein. It boasts new art and introductions by the artists, as well; in its silver anniversary, the bewitching quality of its content remains. Besides faeries, the authors also include renderings of many other denizens of faery land-goblins, dwarves and leprechauns, for instance-as well as stranger breeds, such as the Fachan, a one-armed, one-legged oddity from the Scotland highlands and the Jack-in-Irons, a "Yorkshire giant who haunts lonely roads." For the child learning the pleasures of magical worlds, or for adults who never forgot, this book remains a delight. 176 color and 38 b&w illustrations. my children and i LOVE the stories and the illistrations contained within this book

my children and i LOVE the stories and the illistrations contained within this book. unfortunately i did not heed other buyers' advice regarding the binding of the book. it is such a beautiful book to read, especially with my children at bedtime. BUT the spine was broken up from the time we received it in the mail, and unfortunately i did not act quickly after finding this and try to exchange it. but i think even if i had tried to exchange it, it sounds like this is a common problem. it is so beautiful i am having to pay additional money tto have it rebound by a book binder.we keep trying to read it as is and the pages are becoming even looser and falling out of order. that part is a bummer. i have tucked it away in a safe place with rubber bands around it until we can have the spine replaced. potential future buyers beware.

A classic - even if you can't explain exactly why. That's the beauty of it.

I don't have a lot to say - I had this book when I was a kid (I'm almost 45) and it sparked my imagination and inspired me as a young artist. If you're already a fan, you know what I'm talking about. If you have a thing for the fantastical realm of the mystical world of fairies, trolls, and other wonderfully fun/strange/beautiful beings, and are a nerd/geek fan person who likes to discover the source of the characters in a bunch of modern fantasy novels and popular film... I strongly recommend this book, as well as any others in this line by the same authors and artists. My kids aren't even as excited about this book now that I have it, and that's both sad and kind of awesome. Because it really was just for me. :) A total classic, and a must have for... well, people like me. If I could sum up this review in one word: imagination. Because it matters.

Beautiful book.

I remember being fascinated by this book when I was a child. The illustrations are amazing. I would recommend it for children 6 and over. My children love how the different types of magical creatures are described. The only thing: if you don't want your children to see nude bodies, then it's probably not for you. These are not sexy pictures, but in several pictures the fairies aren't wearing clothes. If it doesn't bother you, you'll enjoy this book.

Great book, bad copy

Love the book, I lost it in a love a long time again and went looking for another copy. Bought one with "light damage to the spine" from a seller, and the first time I opened it, over half the pages just fell out. So great book, really bad copy.

Disintigrating book

Looks like it was once a beautiful book, but what I recieved is literally rotting. The spine is broken, the corners are bent, the cover is yellowed, and the whole thing is covered in little dustlike particles of what I believe were once paper. Definitely sending this back, there's no way I can give this to my child for her birthday.

Book in poor condition

I was excited to see this book available because it’s difficult to find, but I have to admit I was very disappointed. The binding is half missing and the pages are dirty. I was hoping I could make a gift but there’s no way I could give this to someone.

Amazing book! Thanks for offering at a great price. Just some small damage on the cover but that is fine with me as it was specified in the description. Thank you again!

Faeries Book

Nice book however there was a disappointingly large rip out of front page that was not in description. Spine is also very brittle from age so book is breaking apart. Otherwise, it's beautifully illustrated book with wonderful content.
