Description

"A breath of fresh air. . . . Compelling, harrowing. . . and bluntly self-critical." -- -- Seattle Post Intelligencer "A serious, utterly gripping account of faith, fathers, and the military." -- -- Publishers Weekly "Eloquent and honest." -- -- New York Review of Books "Hard to top and impossible to read without being moved." -- -- USA Today "McCain's character has withstood tests the average politician can only imagine. . . . He may be the last of his kind." -- -- Newsweek After a career in the U.S. Navy and two terms as a U.S. representative (1982-1986), John McCain was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986 and re-elected in 1992 and 1998. He was a Republican candidate in the 2000 presidential campaign. Mark Salter has worked on Senator McCain's staff for eleven years, and has been his administrative assistant since 1993.

Features & Highlights

  • Senator John McCain learned about life and honor from his grandfather and father, both four-star admirals in the U.S. Navy. Both their careers and their courage helped prepare McCain for the biggest challenge of his life when, as a naval aviator, he was shot down over Hanoi in 1967 and seriously injured. When his captors realized McCain's impressive military legacy, they offered him early release. In what has now become a legendary act of heroism, McCain refused the offer and was subsequently tortured, held in solitary confinement, and imprisoned for more than five years.
  • Faith of My Fathers
  • is about what McCain learned from his father and grandfather, and how their example enabled him to survive. Told with humility, grace, and humor, it is a story of three imperfect men who faced adversity and emerged with their honor intact. It is a story to inspire and instruct, one that shows what fathers give to their sons, and what, ultimately, endures.

At 68yrs old, very possibly best book I have ever read or at least tied for first place

Maybe I am biased because I am a Navy veteran but also a lifelong Democrat (more of an Independent today) to offset the bias some. The quality of the writing and I doubt that McCain wrote many of those words. His excellent asst. did that, but the story is all John McCains.
Integrity is the theme for sure through 3 generations.
I repeat some of the stories to friends and I get choked up trying to tell it.
Learned from this book that Admiral Stocksdale, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions while a prisoner in basically the same area as McCain. Even though Stocksdale has not always spoken highly of McCain, McCain gives him his due and describes why Stocksdale was given that extremely high honor.
Absolutely excellent book and I am on here looking for copies to send to my friends.

A Hero's Tale...

Obviously, I'd heard a little bit about McCain's military service and some of his personal story during the 2008 presidential election. But, I really still didn't know much about him. So, I thought it time to pick up his autobiography as the next election cycle begins to heat up. Surprisingly, there really isn't any political content - so don't be put off from reading the book if you don't lean to the right. The book details three generations of McCain warriors, including his grandfather's and father's exploits during WWII and his own horrific experiences during the Vietnam War. The stories about his father and grandfather were extremely interesting and do an outstanding job of setting the stage for McCain's future - and the expectations that led him into becoming a 3rd generation Navy man. A great story of courage, perseverance, and human dignity. The best word to describe McCain: Hero.

Good

I didn't realize John Mc Cain was a POW. I was interested to know what he endured during his captivity. He and the other POW's suffered terribly. I am sorry for their suffering, but te integrit of these men is admirable.

Faith of My Fathers: This is not only a family memoir but also a learning of the US Naval battles during WW II

I must say I have never been a great lover of John McCain, but still I chose to read this book to learn about the man. I not only now have an idea of what makes him work, but also through his father and grandfather I learn much about the US Naval history during the WWI and WWII. It just goes to show it pays to step out of one's preferences to learn some interesting things.

The (Nearly) Perfect Story about 3 Imperfect Men

John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential candidate is able to write a beautiful and reflective tome embodied in the novel Faith Of My Fathers. Reflecting on the importance of patriotism, comradeship, and, to borrow a phrase from the book, personal honor, McCain chronicles both the experiences of his grandfather and his father within the book.

Painting himself as a belligerent yet understanding of the greatness and importance of the U.S. military in it's service to the people, John McCain tries immensely to play up his maverick image that he cultivated throughout the 2008 presidential campaign in this novel. He heavily emphasizes the importance of his fellow comrades in both surviving through the Naval Academy and for getting through his imprisonment in Hanoi. One scene in the novel that really portrays the brotherhood between the soldiers that was personally very touching to me was when, near the end of McCain's sentence the prisoners attempt to hold a church service. When the guards try to break it up, a resistance begins to brew, and McCain and his fellow POW's are able to win over the guards and continue to hold church services.

My one qualm with this book is merely a point of contention with McCain's beliefs on America during the Vietnam War. Though I believe that McCain is definitely qualified and is one of the few veterans, due to his experience and adherence to the code of conduct throughout, to have a sort of war hawk opinion on the war in Vietnam, I disagree with his ideas later in the book regarding American Exceptionalism and the idea that America as initially justified into entering the war in Vietnam.

Overall, the novel was a good read, and clocking in at about 350 pages, could be finished in a vigorous afternoon of reading. Brimming over with patriotism, pride, and honor, I give this novel 4.5 stars.

Faith of My Fathers

With the current political race between McCain and Obama I wanted to read as much as possible about each candidate. I enjoyed the McCain book very much and was impressed by his fascinating military background.
