Description

"One of the most exquisite and subtle detective series ever" - The Washington Post "No one knows the labyrinthine world of Venice . . . like Leon's Brunetti." - Time "[Brunetti's] humane police work is disarming, and his ambles through the city are a delight." - The New York Times Book Review "The sophisticated but still moral Brunetti, with his love of food and his loving family, proves a worthy custodian of timeless values and verities." - The Wall Street Journal A New Yorker of Irish/Spanish descent, Donna Leon first went to Italy in 1965, returning regularly over the next decade or so while pursuing a career as an academic in the States and then later in Iran, China and finally Saudi Arabia. It was after a period in Saudi Arabia, which she found ‘damaging physically and spiritually’ that Donna decided to move to Venice, where she has now lived for over twenty years. Her debut as a crime fiction writer began as a joke: talking in a dressing room in Venice’s opera-house La Fenice after a performance, Donna and a singer friend were vilifying a particular German conductor. From the thought ‘why don’t we kill him?’ and discussion of when, where and how, the idea for Death at La Fenice took shape, and was completed over the next four months. Donna Leon is the crime reviewer for the London Sunday Times and is an opera expert. She has written the libretto for a comic opera, entitled Dona Gallina . Set in a chicken coop, and making use of existing baroque music, Donna Gallina was premiered in Innsbruck. Brigitte Fassbaender, one of the great mezzo-sopranos of our time, and now head of the Landestheater in Innsbruck, agreed to come out of retirement both to direct the opera and to play the part of the witch Azuneris (whose name combines the names of the two great Verdi villainesses Azucena and Amneris).

Paola Brunetti: A Celebration

Venice, the City of Love, is also the city of crime--at least, it is in Donna Leon's charming, beautifully written series of mysteries. Guido Brunetti works for the Venice police, and he lives in the city with his wife and two children. Guido and his colleagues usually have to deal with murder, theft, and political corruption involving strangers, but in this particular story the "criminal" is very close to home. When his wife, Paola, commits a vandalous act of social protest and is arrested, our marvelous, quirky hero is forced to "solve" the case. This leads to the exposure of some actual crime and criminals, which was Mrs. Brunetti's intention all along.

Ever since [[ASIN:006074068X Death at La Fenice: A Commissario Guido Brunetti Mystery]], the mystery world has been graced by the presence of this thoughtful, brilliant detective and his city. FATAL REMEDIES is one of my favorites in the series because it focuses a great deal on the wonderful Paola Brunetti, and she's my favorite character. If you like good, old-fashioned detection in a fascinating setting, you'll like Donna Leon. Fans of the late, lamented Inspector Morse or George Simenon's Inspector Maigret will probably love the Brunetti series. I know I do. Highly recommended.

Do Two Wrongs Help Correct Another?

I have read many of Donna Leon's books in this series. This one is definitely as good as the last seven and one of the better ones for the writing. Leon mixes Guido's family life in with his professional life as a commissario of police. This one particularly intertwined as a close relative is apprehended. Guido's integrity is stretched when his world's collide. Very good book.

My favorite mystery writer!

I love this series: the wonderful character Guido Brunetti, the interesting politics of the police force where he has to deal with a corrupt boss, the great Venetian setting, and his not-perfect but loving relationship with his family. The cases are almost an afterthought, but in a good way. One of the nice things about this series is that, unlike with too many mysteries, the ending isn't wrapped up with a nice bow.

If you haven't read Donna Leon yet you are in for a treat.

Terrible!

Terrible! My first and last Donna Leon book. There's no murder until more than 100 pages in, if that gives you any indication what to expect from this "murder mystery." Those 100 pages are filled with Brunetti's internal moral struggle with his wife's act of civil disobedience in . . . gasp . . . breaking a window. You won't care who died, who did it, or why. An extra star for the taste of Italian life, but otherwise, blah.

Donna Leon

Great series. The violence is very low key if there at all in her books. There are crimes (he IS a detective) but nothing is graphic.
