Description

Dwyane Wade, the eight-time All-Star and two-time NBA champion for the Miami Heat and winner of a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has miraculously defied the odds throughout his incredible career. But off the court Dwyane has sought his most cherished goal: being a good dad to his sons, Zaire and Zion. Dwyane begins his story in March 2011 with the news that after a long, bitter custody battle, he has been awarded sole custody of his sons. A Father First chronicles the lessons Dwyane has learned as a single dad as well as past events that shaped his dreams, prayers, and promises. Though divorced, Dwyane's parents showed him that the unconditional love between parents and children is a powerful guiding force. A revealing, personal story of one of America's top athletes, A Father First is also a call to action—from a man who had to fight to be in his children's lives—that will show mothers and fathers how to step up and be parents themselves. Dwyane Wade is a three-time NBA champion, businessman, TV analyst, producer, activist, and philanthropist. He played in the NBA from 2003 to 2019, primarily for the Miami Heat. Wade is the New York Times bestselling author of A Father First and co-author of Shady Baby . He is the father of five children: Zaire, Zaya, Xavier, Kaavia James, and his nephew Dahveon.

Awesome story of overcoming adverse childhood to become a major sports star and an unusually dedicated father.

It seems D.Wade "tells it like it was" when he details growing up in Chicago in a family that was split because. among other things, his mother's addiction to drugs. Both parents were absent from the home for most of his youth. He had a praying grandmother and an older sister who loved him dearly and tried to shield him from the pitfalls of the neighborhood. It was while his mom was incarcerated that Dwyane lived with his dad and his stepmother. He was of average height during his early teens, but grew 4 inches over one summer, making him 6' 2". He eventually added another two inches.

It was when Wade went to live with his father that his interest in basketball accelerated. He was in the company of his step brothers which included Demetrius McDaniel, a standout basketball player at Richards High School; Demetrius was two years older than Wade. In Demetrius' senior year at Richards, the team was 28-2. The coach at Richards lamented to Dwyane Wade, Sr that he didn't know what he would do now that Demetrius was graduating. Dwyane, Sr. replied that he should not worry, Dwyane was a good basketball player also.

He married his high school sweetheart and became a father when he was barely out of the teens. He tried to keep the marriage together, even to the extent of having another child. This didn't fix the marriage. He is kind to the boys' mother in the book, but after the divorce, she was intent upon denying him access to the boys. The story of how he struggled to see the boys and how he was eventually awarded sole custody is interesting.

A great basketball story! He gives a lot of credit to his high school coaches who helped him navigate the scholarship application process and to the coach at Marquette who accepted him although his ACT scores were not high enough. He was "red-shirted" the first year. Coach Crean told him he was part of the team he just wouldn't play in the games or travel. The coach nudged Wade into a leadership role. Since he was not playing he would watch the other players and suggest ways to improve their play. He was required to earn a 2.5 GPA to play his sophomore year. He earned 2.7 and by 3rd testing period he had a 3.0 and it continued to climb. He helped lead the team to the Final Four in 2003.

I loved this book. Wade is a professional athlete worthy of admiration. He says his doesn't drink alcohol, smoke or use drugs. He is dedicated to raising these two boys; he has even provided a home for one of his nephews.

My book DWAYNE WADE A FATHER FIRST can teach you many things. If you think just cause Dwayne Wade has a lot of money ,a lot of friends and a great basketball career dosent mean his life is so great. Also one thing I learnt from Dwayne Wade is that just cause its unlikely docent mean its impossible. When Wade had to get multiple surgeries on his meniscus in college he didn't give up and he became a great player .When my doctor told me I will have ankle problems my whole life I learnt from Dwayne don't give up and prove the doctors wrong .Wade has a famous quote "Thing are only impossible till proven possible .Read this book and see what I mean.

When Dwayne was just five years old ,his mom and dad got divorced and he got sent to stay with his mom .His mom felt broken and put her kids in danger by constantly in voting boys over to get drunk and poor little five year old Dwayne got a gun to his head by the police many times. When Dwayne grew up he also got divorced and remembered his hard time as a kid and wanted to give his kids Zaire and Zion so ,he went to court and battled for full custody and along the way he's trying to give his kids the best childhood.

The author uses a very visual writing style like,"After pulling up to the curb, coach wearing a very serious expression stuck out his hand".Another example is ,"Im sore I have to get back into game mode.Alot of times the author uses the litelary device imagery as an example ,"I wept I'm,sorry.Another example of imagery is "The weight of the world lifted off my chest.

The authors message or theme is that money can't buy happiness,Dwayne wasn't happy when his family got split up though he lived in a mansion with servants ,personal cooks
he was nobly happy once he got full custody on his kids.In the story once Wade got the email that he won the custody battle he dropped his phone and yelled FINNALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I can be a part of my sons life and be there unlike my parents for me."

Now you can see that Dwayne Wade life wasn't always so great. When you finish this book you'll be inspired to never give up like Wade didn't when he had to get multiple meniscus surgeries .

D WADE. Greatness in the face of adversity.

I am D Wade fan just from reading this book.
Don't get me wrong he is a jock.
Man I read this book thinking he was a jock.
A jock who can seriously play basketball.
A jock who loves his family.
A man who understands family.
A man who can laugh at himself.
A man who can respect those who hurt him.
A person who pushes himself to get what he believes he can be.
A person who recognizes greatness in himself and others.
A person I'd like to know.
This book delves deep into a struggling family childhood, that I never experienced.
It exposes a sporting religion that I can only see in dreams.
