Description

From Library Journal After the Earl of Waverly, blue-deviled and thoroughly intoxicated, encounters Lisette Colling escaping from a Paris convent one night, he rashly promises to take her to her wealthy grandpere in England. Returning to a country he had fled in disgrace four years earlier, the earl, through a strange twist of fate, finds himself indebted to and aided by the very man whose wife he had once tried to seduce. Action-filled and classically witty, this delightful story takes traditional Regency fare a gamine heroine and an older, jaded hero (shades of Heyer's These Old Shades!), a marriage of convenience, a kidnapping, and a chase of grand proportions adds some refreshingly unexpected twists, and elegantly serves it up with charm and flair. The third in South's "Weaver" series, this romp is sure to garner new readers and please former fans, who will enjoy seeing the villain from The Weaver Takes a Wife (PrinnyWorld, 1999) turn into an honorable man and a marvelous hero without losing his rakish charm. South (Brighton Honeymoon) lives in Saraland, AL. Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc. Sheri Cobb South has a talented, witty and refreshingly original voice. -- Romance Reviews Today, October 2001 From the Inside Flap Forced by bankruptcy and scandal into exile in France, Lord Waverly expects never to return to his homeland until, staggering home from a gaming hell in the wee hours of the morning, he encounters a young novice escaping from a convent. When she asks him to escort her to England, promising him that her English grandfather will reward him handsomely for her safe conveyance, Waverly reluctantly agrees. Alas, Waverly soon realizes the enormity of his task. When he delivers the irrepressible Lisette to her grandfather's home only to discover that the old man is dead, Waverly is left with no alternative but to offer her the protection of his name. And when he is unexpectedly reunited with the woman whose marriage precipitated his flight to France, Waverly begins to discover that his marriage of convenience is likely to prove very inconvenient indeed... Sheri Cobb South is the author of five young adult novels, but her first love has always been the Regency. Her titles in this genre include the critically acclaimed THE WEAVER TAKES A WIFE and the award-winning MISS DARBY'S DUENNA. She lives in Mobile, Alabama with her husband and two children. Read more

Very cute!

This story was really cute! :)
I'm really glad that Lord Waverly was given a chance to redeem himself in this book! And he did a good job of it. The part at the end when he's telling Lisette that she challenged him to put the welfare of others before his self was really sweet!
Lisette reminded me of Catherine Moorland, from Northanger Abbey! :D She was so adorable and she made me smile a lot. :)
As in Brighton Honeymoon, I really liked that the Brundy's were still a major part of the story! :D I enjoyed watching them work through their problems and have a closer relationship because of it. (It was a good example that misunderstandings should be a means of working together and growing stronger, not a reason to give up!)
William Brundy was so adorable! (The reference to book one at the end was brilliant! =D)
It's not a surprise by now that thone of my favorite characters was one who was barely in the story at all- the innkeeper at the waterfront inn towards the end of the story! :) (It's a mystery to me why I get so attached to the most random of characters!)
The Weaver Takes a Wife will always be my favorite in this series, but I thoroughly enjoyed each book for it's own unique qualities and characters, and will continue to look back through these books in the future for some great laughs!

Prefer These Old Shades and Friday's Child

This tale follows the trials, fears, and misunderstandings of Lord Waverly, a disreputable exile escaping crushing indebtedness in France, and Lisette, a winsome maiden-in-distress half Waverly's age as they journey on the road to marital happiness.

South's lively story is tightly written. French Leave is part of a series, and while this is the only installment I have read, the story stands on its own.

The crux of my criticisms is that I have been a fan of Georgette Heyer's Georgian & Regency novels for years. Perhaps if I was less familiar with Heyer's work I would have liked French Leave better. Throughout the novel I was reminded of several Heyer books, but especially [[ASIN:1402219474 These Old Shades]], [[ASIN:1402210795 Friday's Child]], and [[ASIN:1402219539 Devil's Cub]]. Situations throughout French Leave echo situations in these novels so strongly that I had some difficulty staying motivated to finish it. I recommend going to the source and savoring the exceptional Georgette Heyer novels mentioned above. South's novel was good, but suffers when compared to Heyer's treatment of similar scenarios. It is too bad that this novel invited such comparisons.

A Sparkling Gem

This is a perfect traditional regency. From the beautiful cover to the luxurious layout, to the perfect, but not over-done, Regency language, everything in this book transports the reader into an age of light-hearted elegance. The author pays homage to Heyer without copying her, and writes with a facility that few current regency authors can command.
I liked it a lot better than "The Weaver Takes a Wife", the earlier book in the series and look forward to reading the rest of her works!
