She struggles to learn Swedish and adapt to Swedish culture, but in the process runs into a number of culture clashes, all based on the authors’ real life experiences. Åke Daun, professor of ethnology from Stockholm University and a specialist in Swedish mentality, has examined the first book and describes the way it introduces Swedish mentality as "innovative and entertaining". Having finished both books, the student will have acquired a vocabulary of slightly more than 1,500 words including 57 % of the 2,000 most frequent words of the Swedish language as defined by

  • (the Language Bank), a data base published by the University of Gothenburg. In an appendix to book 1, the similarities between English and Swedish are explained from an historical point of view, and over 300 related words from different areas are presented. Each chapter of the books contains a short grammar section presenting essentials in Swedish morphology and syntax. All grammatical terms, except the most common ones, are explained. At the end of each book there is a grammar overview with definitions of concepts and references to relevant chapters. Each lesson includes a number of exercises, where students are encouraged to practice their newly gained grammar knowledge, repeat vocabulary, and answer questions in connection with the texts. As the students’ vocabulary develops, the questions become increasingly open-ended in order to stimulate reflection and discussion in class. Furthermore, a number of songs with simple vocabulary are included, mainly children's songs by classic song-writers. Finally, each book contains answers to the exercises and a complete alphabetical glossary. Judgments about

  • I'm just learning Swedish, and this book is wonderful. The style & methodology are ideal. Highly recommend.

  • A brilliant book. … The words and pronunciations are well explained with examples given. Common Swedish vocab is also used in lessons. Quite amazing that by lesson 2 (Lektion 2) I was understanding and translating simple paragraphs and answering questions in full sentences without much difficulty. The two books are a must buy for people looking to learn the Swedish language. … The second book is just as good as this one.

  • I've tried to start learning Swedish several times with at least 4 books, and finally I've found one that is didactic enough to keep me going! Very natural way of teaching, the closest thing I've seen to have a teacher that prepares a class for you. I'm already looking for the 2nd book!

not woth buying

Sent back this book, I thought it was going to be a easy-to-read and easy to understand book, but it is not. My husband is trying to learn swedish (Im borned and raised) so he have a good idea of the language already, but this is just pointless. Long pieces of pretty meaningless text and a few really weird chapters describing what is supposed tot be "normal life activities" but it is just stupid. He couldnt relate at all! I usually never write a bad review but this book is NOT for beginners (not easy) and somewhat confusing with the different chapters showing different grammars. Not recommended unless you are already fluent in swedish

Outstanding English to Swedish Text

This book is a valuable tool for learning Swedish. The vocabulary increases incrementally with ongoing text that tells the story of an exchange student coming to Sweden and encountering cultural differences. Cleverly written and illustrated. The best part are the YouTube videos for pronunciation help. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.

Wish I Bought This when I first started learning

I am super picky when it comes to learning material. If it isn’t in the right format or in a way that catches my attention, it’s like my brain just turns off to learning from it. My fiancé is a Swede so I’m learning for him. Definitely a great book for beginners, but only if you’re comfortable with pronunciation. If not you can always type the vocabulary into google translate to ensure you’re pronouncing everything correctly. It covers grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and more.

This book has more than I knew I needed.

This book covers everything from vocabulary, pronunciations, charts of word groups (colors, etc.), conjucations… it even has puzzles and stories (based on the author's real experience as an exchange student!) AND songs! The back features an easy to read glossary with a layout of the definition, word type, and page reference. There are 681 words, and it almost makes me regret buying a Swedish-English dictionary. The book is actually fairly small and compact. I really have no complaints. I took a risk buying it, but I'm definitely going to buy the second one when I'm done with this one. Thank you so much for this great product!
TL;DR: this book is like a compact primary with historical and informative references, and features a glossary of over 600 words!

Low Quality Printing- I have had two pages simply detach and come out of the book while reading

I purchased this book after looking at the table of contents and liked the set up of small chapters with exercises and even a pronunciation guide. I have gotten to chapter 2 in this book and one page of out each chapter has simply detached while I turn the page reading. Very low quality printing . I enjoy real books and prefer them to an ebook any day so this was disappointing. That is not a book mark in the picture, that is the page no longer part of the book that simply detached.

This is a good one!

This is a great book. It takes you gradually through an easy introduction to Swedish. It uses good dialogues and a good use of basic vocabulary (unlike some other Swedish instruction books that introduce you to things like "cheese platter" and "wig" before introducing "Jag forstar inte" and "Det ar bra").

The best part of this book is that it lives up to its promise: It teaches you Swedish using the similarities between Swedish and English first to make you feel comfortable in the language.

The only things I didn't like were the little cartoon notes explaining the things that are harder in Swedish than they are in English. I didn't find these very encouraging. It would be better to just focus on how easy Swedish is for an English speaker than to regularly remind the learner about these challenges early on in their learning journey.

Help needed with audio on kindle version.

I’ve just bought this book for my Kindle after reading good reviews and liking the format. But the main reason for buying was this: “The Kindle edition includes sound tracks for all vocabulary lists and texts.”
But now that I’ve bought the book I cannot see how to activate the sound track. Nor can I find the usual place to ask questions about products on the Amazon introductory page to this book.
Can anyone here help me please?
